Other thing to consider is I want something safe for awhile, since soon I won't be able to test him as I have my surgery coming up. And, there's just no way my wife will feel comfortable enough to test him, so at least I will know 1 will keep him safe. 2 may actually be a concern, so I will stay away from that for now and revise when I'm able to after my recovery.

I'm sorry to hear he's losing weight. All the other stuff good? Peeing, pooping, purring, playing? Vet checks him out ok otherwise?

Sorry to hear there won't be any tests while you're out for surgery - no one else available to help out with that?

Yes, he has been doing fine all around, and the vet checked him out. And, I don't view him losing weight as a negative since he is eating so much less sugar after removing his dry food. He honestly was overweight and would be a lot healthier if he was closer to the weight he used to be. There is no one who lives close enough who feels comfortable testing him.
