High amps and he just vomited! AFTER his shot! At least it was a tiny shot and his numbers were high. Great

I'm off to check his ketones.

Ketones were 0.3 on the meter....Normal. Wouldn't you know the little guy went right to the litterbox AFTER I used the expensive ketone strip (and wasted one with an error message!)

Guess I'll wait a bit and try feeding him again.

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362 JUST VOMITED

Hi Jaye

I'm here with paper towel on hand ready to catch some pukey's - my kitties like to do this on full days days
but anyway, sorry about the mess, keep an eye out if you can.

Nice cycle yesterday, a bit of a bounce or something affecting him, today, hopefully it will clear up.

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362 JUST VOMITED

I can see he's not feeling well. Whether he's not feeling well so he's high or he's high so he's not feeling well...don't know.

He rarely vomits anymore. It scared me! It also didn't make my white dog, who was lying directly under the vomit, too happy. ;-)

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362 JUST VOMITED on the Dog

what did Chester eat this morning?
and how much?
was the food cold or warm?
is he meat loafing? strange sounds coming from his tummy?

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362 JUST VOMITED on the Dog

Are you sure this wasn't a premeditated 'urp' on the dog?

If Chester refuses more breakfast, a little Pepsid may help to settle his tummy.

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362 JUST VOMITED on the Dog

Hope Chester will keep down the next food....poor doggie...
Well, you didn't really expect an easy Saturday, did you Jaye?
I hope things settle down and that Chester is okay...

Re: 10/23 Chester's amps 362,+4=302

Well, this IS frustrating!

I waited about 15 minutes and tried feeding him a different food...no luck, he just turned his nose (then I realized it had beef in it...he hates beef). Tried something more fishy and he ate it all with normal gusto and kept it down fine.

The food that he threw up wasn't cold and it was food he normally eats. He did eat it relatively fast, but nothing unusual about that. It was definitely more a regurgitation than a vomit. Weird thing...sorry, this is a bit gross...it appeared to have several grains of rice in it. I have NO idea where he would have gotten that as there is nothing I've given him with rice and I haven't cooked with rice in ages. I did use a new food in a pouch that is almost all gravy for his HC gravy last night. Perhaps it did have rice in it that I didn't notice but it's in the bottom of the garbage now and nope, not even for Chester will I go digging through that!

No stomach noises that I can hear. We all slept in so I missed the +1 or +2...but he was so high I didn't worry about that.

I'll give this today, then I'll really wonder if I should consider his last reduction a failed reduction. Thoughts?

Re: 10/23 Chester NOT DOING WELL

So, just a few minutes into his evening meal, Chester started violently regurgitating his food...again. This is the 2nd time today. His pmps is 351.

I gave him some Pepcid and 1/6 of a metaclopromide as per vet instructions. She told me to wait a bit before trying to feed again. I've got some boiled chicken breast that I hope he'll eat. He is sitting meatloaf style a bit and I forgot to give him his daily Tramodol for pain this morning.

I'm worried about a pancreatitis attack. It would't be his first. I've been instructed to watch him and if he doesn't keep things down better to give him fluids tonight.

Dadburnit! Just when we were doing better! I really don't feel comfortable staying at the .5 with high numbers like this but if he doesn't eat I'm also not comfortable giving him .75. I'm already late (by a few minutes) with his shot.

editing in...he just ate several dice sized cubes of chicken breast eagerly. I'll wait 10 minutes to see if they stay down.

Re: 10/23 Chester NOT DOING WELL

I tried to give him more chicken breast but he wouldn't have anything to do with it.

I'm in a bit of a panic here, because I know he needs some insulin...so I did a big No-No. I offered him about 15 pellets of EVO low (7 carbs) kibble to see if there was any interest in food at all. He immediately scarfed it. Thank goodness...

So the question...do I delay more, wait for the Pepcid/metacloprimide to kick in then offer more food, making this a late dose and therefore a reduction that he doesn't need with these higher numbers or B) do I give him a bit more low carb kibble, shoot .5 and watch him for vomiting?

editing in...gave him about 10 more kibble, which he ate. He also just ate about a teaspoon of LC. I need to shoot something soon.

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT DOING WELL

hi Jaye

I'm not sure on the meds, but as for failed dose, not too sure about that seeing as he is not feeling well, and that can raise BG numbers

going to give you a bump if others have any thoughts on this

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT DOING WELL

I'm going to go ahead and split the difference and give him a fattish .5. I've got to do something soon...can't put off the insulin any longer because he's already high.

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT DOING WELL

Jaye, if he continues with this, I think you should call your vet again and report on what's happening...

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351

I don't blame you for offering dry, they have to eat, whatever it takes, and hopefully he will keep it down, keep in mind too, numbers may also be a bit higher due to some kibble....
would you be able to see where he is at in a couple hours? (+3 or +4)
I do hope he feels better soon.
hang in there!

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351

I'll admit I'm freaking out a bit, because he was doing SO well just a day or two ago.

I just called the vet because he peed and I got a Ketodiastix test which definitely went to a trace of ketones, which I've NEVER seen before. She told me not to panic (yeah...right) and the strips can often give a false positive. She advised to use the Precision Xtra meter, which I did. Thank goodness I have it...it showed ketones in the normal range of 0.2

So....I'm going to give him some fluids (just in case) and then actually eat my own dinner before offering him some more food.

He hasn't vomited since dinner.

Weird thing, too. In the litter box he peed as he would if he were spraying (which he doesn't do) instead of getting down on his haunches like he normally does. I'm thinking this is an indication of possible pain as well. At least I got the tramodol in him and he's getting fluids as soon as I can warm them up.

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351

If you can, keep an eye on Chester's LB behavior. If he's in pain, it could be a UTI or crystals. If there's either, there may be blood in the urine which is very hard to see on visual inspection. Someone here mentioned putting a tissue or paper towel down when their cat was peeing. They could if there was blood in the urine. I'm glad you're keeping a close eye on Chester and have been in touch with the vet.

Have you tried baby food?

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351

Sending healing and feel better vines to Chester. I hope the fluids will help him and that he's better tomorrow.

Re: 10/23 QUESTION Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351

Thanks!

The pee that he did was quite a bit and he wasn't straining like I've seen with my other cat who has frequent UTIs. Then again, ECID. It seemed more of a "I don't want to squat down" thing.

I gave him 75 ml fluids and just offered him a good sized tablespoon of LC which he ate readily. Yay. I'll keep him confined to see if he keeps it down.

Have you tried baby food?

 Why did I not think of the most obvious thing? I have LOTS of baby food in the cabinet but that never occurred to me. Too panicked, I guess. I'll use it for sure if he seems like he doesn't want to eat again.

Things seem to be getting more stable... I don't feel that anything is critical right now. I tell myself I have a whole pharmacy in my cupboard, fluids, ketone strips, all sorts of food, pain meds... I should be able to handle this if it doesn't take a turn for the worse.

I'm a little ticked at the Ketostix...that's all I needed was a positive that wasn't really positive! Maybe they're old or have been exposed to too much air...who knows.

I'm glad I bought the Precision Xtra even though the strips are crazy expensive. I was literally on the phone with Wal-Mart for 30 minutes trying to see if they had any more. I was transfered several times, talked to two managers, got disconnected twice. Screamed at the phone more times than I could count.

Finally the pharmacist picked up and said that the number that I called (the Wal-Mart number and then asked for the pharmacy...like any normal human being would) goes to a phone that NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO ANSWER!!!!! Yes, I'm cyber-yelling! It's almost as satisfying as wine right now.

Re: 10/23 Chester NOT FEELING WELL, pmps 351,+2.5=253=

I've been getting Chester to eat in small portions which he's done without any complaining. I'm really surprised that he's not higher at 2.5 considering the relatively low dose and the kibble (albeit low carb kibble) that he's eaten.

Keeping my paws crossed. I'll have him sleep with me tonight (usually our FIV cat sleeps with us and the rest are not in the bedroom) so I can monitor things. Amazing how fast a "mom" (even if I'm not a "real" mom) wakes up to the sound of her kid vomiting (while dad sleeps on, I might add).

hey, jaye...sorry...i got caught up in binks little pukus play today and didnt get by here till now...

hope chester's feeling better..and hope you're feeling better too.

thank goodness for the dog...i'm gonna be cleaning carpets all night...

celi and binks

eta; wonder if our guys snuck out and watched the exorcist or some college drinking movie together??

10/24 Chester's AMPS 437

Well, I can't say as I'm surprised, with the kibble, the not feeling well and the extra food I did manage to get down him last night.

He's eating right now with gusto, however, and his eyes appear brighter. Seems to have spunk. Waiting to shoot in case he vomits.
