So, I'm thinking it's time to push the dose back up a little. We've been on this dose quite awhile, after two quick decreases due to low numbers. While we're still seeing a few green nadirs, and a few cliff-jumping episodes (2 last week) where he plummets at +2, overall we're seeing a lot of blue & yellow.

I'm even seeing some pink the last couple days - which is NOT the direction I was hoping for. Of course just a few days ago I had mentioned what a nice blue pre-shot trend we had seen for a few days... so I don't know what to do. @-)

On the bright side, civvie Hoppy seems to be feeling better. Still trying to bring his weight up, but he's enjoying the extra food.

On the not-so-bright side, we lost our semi-feral porch kitty. She "came with the house" when we moved in back in 2005 and was already well into adulthood at that point. She had to be at least 17 by now. Pretty remarkable for a cat that spent her entire life outdoors. She was born under the house (grandma couldn't remember which litter she was from, which is why we don't know her exact age), to a feral mom (there was a growing feral colony that my grandmother managed to get fixed) and was the last remaining member of the feral colony - many of whom has succumbed to FeLV back in the late 90s. While I knew she'd never be happy as an indoor cat (and since mine are indoor only - I couldn't have an indoor/outdoor kitty - too much chance to bring in disease, etc), we gave her access to an area of the basement so she could be warm and dry in the winter. This is where she went to die. I knew her demise was likely - earlier this week she was down there and didn't seem very interested in moving. I gave her some fancy feast and water, but she just sniffed it. This was NOT a cat I could ever medicate. After years of feeding her, she finally let me touch her a couple years ago. She was still largely feral, but would accept a quick pet at times - one quick body sweep only - and always at your own risk, as she frequently ended the pet with a violent claw swipe. She would meow sweetly for food, then hiss at you as you put it down for her... She wanted so desperately to be loved and petted, but she just couldn't bring herself to accept it. She'd meow at me, roll around on the ground flirting, and then freak out if I moved an inch. Definitely not a cat I'd ever be able to pill or even get in a carrier without a lot of human bloodshed. A vet would have had to knock her out to even examine her. She'd fallen ill before, but somehow always bounced back. But it was just her time I guess. At least she seemed comfortable - she had a good life for a feral kitty. RIP Sissy Cat.

Re: 10/22 Tink AMPS 255, +2=311 Time to increase??

I would definitely increase. In general, you want to get as much insulin into a diabetic cat as you safely can. He hasn't gotten below 90 in nearly 20 cycles. I'd go up by 0.25u.

i'm sorry about your feral Sissy Cat. Sounds like she had life as good as possible, under the circumstances. She must've felt safe with you.

Re: 10/22 Tink AMPS 255, +2=311 Time to increase??

Hi there

Tink only waved hello to 3.0u on his way from 3.25u to 2.75u. I agree with Julie on a .25u increase.
Going down the dosing ladder isn't always a straight line. We had our share of ups and downs ;-)

I'm sorry for your loss of Sissy Cat. She sounds like one smart and tough cookie, who over the many years of her life managed her CGs well ;-)
She clearly had a good life and a good death, thanks to you.

Re: 10/22 Tink AMPS 255, +2=311, PMPS=HI - latest carb binge

So ya'll wanna guess what the latest carb binge was?? Just to catch up anyone who hasn't followed our journey - Tink's former carb binges were couscous, tomatoes, pizza, and now.... macaroons!! ohmygod_smile

We keep all our sweets or fresh baked goods in either the oven or microwave so the cats (Tink specifically) can't get to them. Of course, this is a pain when we have to actually USE either appliance. So, apparently after I left this morning, DD heated something up in the micro - thus, setting the macaroons on the stove. Well, apparently she forgot to put them away (which I've done too - it's easy to get distracted around here). I came home to 4 macaroons on the cookie rack, one on the counter with a bite out of it, and the other 3... well... we never found those.

As expected, PMPS was "HI". We just tested for +2 though, and he's already down to 355. SO, in case ya'll were wondering... it seems that macaroons clear the system a lot faster than couscous or pizza does.

So, I'll look at upping his dose back to 3u on Friday when I can be home to monitor for a few days. He likes to throw me a nice curveball around day 2 or 3 of an increase... so hopefully we have smoother sailing this time.

Hopefully that dessert was the last carb binge.  Tink has good taste. Did you test any other cats to see if he had a helper?

Good luck on the increase when you get to it.

Sorry to hear about Sissy Cat. For a feral she lived a good long life thanks to you. :YMHUG:

I didn't test anyone else... but I'm sure Tarzan was a co-conspirator. He always is. Hoppy never gets to "help" since his disability prevents him from getting up on the counters - and Venus is too good for lowly human food.

You're description of The Infamous Carb Binge gave me a giggle this morning.

I'm sorry for your loss of Sissy Cat. I have no doubt, she would not have had as long a life if it wasn't for your kindness.

Rest in peace, Sissy Cat. Your family has sent you to the bridge with love and a lot of understanding over the years.

Seventeen is a long life for an outdoor cat. She was lucky to have a home with you.

It's an adventure every day! Good luck with the new dose for Tink!

Hmm... maybe the macaroons are stickin' around longer than I thought. He was down to 180-something last night at +4, but was up around 350 this morning and 405 @ +2.

So, either it's residual - OR those 3 macaroons I couldn't find are stashed somewhere for future snacking delight. Might have to move some furniture when I get home.

I'm so sorry about Sissy Cat...I know she felt your love and felt safe with you.

Tink, you are something else ohmygod_smile  !!! I hope those macaroons clear out soon!

Ain't THAT the truth!?! This morning, after his high +2, he was demanding food. He didn't like it when I changed the timed feeder to give his meal at +4 instead of +3. So to rebel, he decided to try to scarf down the piece of FLUFF that the dog had pulled out of her plush toy. Had it half way down his throat before I was able to get it away from him. Got it away from him and he beelines to another piece and tries to eat it. So I had to clean up all the fluff pieces of the latest destroyed plush toy before I left for work. ohmygod_smile

What is WRONG with this cat?!?! I'm starting to seriously think he has Pica (the human disorder that results in people eating things like paste, laundry soap, etc)!!! Stuffed animal fluff and plastic grocery bag handles are two of his absolute favorite "food" groups. This cat is going INSANE (he's always had a thing for bag handles, but the fluff fetish is new). And he's taking me with him!!!!

OMG, Tink! You are a very resourceful and naughty kitty!!!! You definitely keep your beans on their toes!

I hope the dosecrease does it's job, and that the contraband clears his system soon!

I'm so sorry about your feral kitty. 17 is an excellent life span for an outdoor cat. It would have undoubtedly been much shorter and less pleasant without your care. How nice that she chose to cross the bridge in your home - it shows she trusted you. Now you don't have to worry and wonder because she just disappeared and didn't come back. Fly free, Sissy Cat, and land softly.

You're not alone...my civvie,Zen, eats dust bunnies when he's hungry and it's not quite mealtime. Talk about stressing out a MamaBean! This morning, it was about half an hour before breffis, and he was roaming the bedroom looking for dust bunnies to snack on....the bedroom is apparently prime dust bunny hunting territory. Of course that kept me awake...I didn't want him gagging and barfing on dust bunnies. Crazy cat won't touch cheese, though....go figure  !!!

I hope Tink doesn't have pica. A friends cat had it. No towel nor sweater was safe in the house. He had several embarrassing moments when kitty ate a hole in a guests sweat shirt. ohmygod_smile

I'm not even sure he has to BE hungry. Plastic bag handles have NEVER lasted more than a minute or two in this house. We have to watch the bag or put it out of reach. Turn your back for seconds and it's lacking handles. He wont eat the rest of it - just the handles. Apparently they taste better.

When he was younger, he used to eat hair ties. The big fluffy ones (not just rubber band type ones). And ribbon. I'm sure he'd still eat ribbon if given the chance - but that gets kept locked up. We have to put presents upside down under the tree, with the bow getting squished underneath - or they will all be bowless.

I'm not sure I've ever found an actual food item he wont eat. Last night he was trying to fight me for my caramel apple. And that was right after he ate!

So sorry to hear about your feral Sissy. She knew you cared for her and gave her a comfortable long life.

OMG on the macaroons at least the binge coincided w/ his increase. My GA Cleo wouldn't leave photos and sandpaper alone. If they were left face up she would sit there and lick , and lick and lick.
