Good Monday morning, Everyone,

Rusty had a good night, a good shot this morning, and is sleeping in his little bed by the radiator. He didn't eat all of his first sitting of breakfast, but he may have finished his nighttime food pretty close to the time we got up and therefore may not have been hungry (he pretty much free feeds). Today I will go over his spreadsheets and his past test results in preparation for our 6-month check-up at the vettybean's tomorrow afternoon. I would like to get a handle on his recent higher numbers. Interestingly, I just spent some time looking at his SS from last year at this time, and it is similar to now (actually, the numbers might be even higher when compared to this year, because I was using the notorious FreeStyleLite meter then!). Anyway, I want to see where he is. Also, he has been "scooting" along the floor mats and, outdoors, on the brick walk, much more often than "usual". I just learned that scooting is a cat's attempt to self-treat compacted anal sacs. So I will have the vet check him for this.

We cancelled our paddle today and rescheduled for Thursday. Now that we have cancelled, the day doesn't look bad at all! You never know. Mountain weather is unpredictable.

Thinking of Claudia today and remembering Rocket.

Wishing everyone a good day and sending healing vines to all kitties and beans in need of them,

Ella & Rusty

Morning Ella ~O) ~O) ~O)

Nice start for Rusty! Interesting when comparing last year to this year, same time frame. I wonder what the significance is with that. Interesting too on the scooting. Best get that checked. I have to have Elsa checked every three months or so to have her sacs expressed as she has a tendency to have impacted ones. Not fun when that becomes a issue. Hope all is well there with Rusty.

Bummer on the canceled paddle. I know on the unpredictability of mtn weather... Canceled somethings here too due to an awful minoring, only to find out that things were so much better an hour or two later. I hope you will be able to go o TH.

Enjoy your day today. ~O) :-D

Re: 10/22 Rusty AMPS 155

Hope Rusty 's sacs relief will be quick and not become a new issue.
Nice start for the day. Slide on down Rusty. The green lagoon lies in wait for you.

Re: 10/22 Rusty AMPS 155

Hope Rusty's numbers come down to greens soon. Could it have something to do with the change of seasons confused_cat . Hope you get in your canoe trip this week.

I hope everything goes well at Rusty's vet visit tomorrow. Keep surfing those greens Rusty.

Hi again,

Rusty had a low-key day: not much energy, not much appetite, but, on the other hand, good numbers! I think he knows he's going to the vettybean tomorrow afternoon. I haven't decided yet whether to have the spec fPL done, but he will have fasted for 6 hours by the time of the appointment, so I can make up my mind in the morning. Rusty doesn't seem to have any overt symptoms of pancreatitis. Maybe I'll request the snap fPL (which my vet does in house) and if the results are positive for pancreatitis, I'll then have the vet re-do the blood sample and send it to IDEXX for the spec fPL (so that I will know the numerical value and have a baseline).

Can anyone tell me that if Rusty has to have his anal sacs expressed, is this a surgical procedure? Is it painful?

Rusty spent a lot of time on the radiator and in his perch today. Sunshine was streaming in the window. He went out for a while this afternoon, encountered "Shadow" and, after meeting and greeting, the two of them took a swat at each other.

Everyone have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

Anal sac expression is a simple procedure - they do it right there, and I do a modified version at home. The vet puts a finger in the anus and milks it out. The sacs are approximately at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock if you look at a clock, with the opening towards the anus. I don't do the finger method, but on Molly, if I hold her on my lap so her belly is up and head under my chin, and grab her feet and pull her feet towards me, she gets a little stressed and struggles in such a way that they express by themselves! Unless they get a little impacted, and then the vet takes care of it. So I give her little expression "hugs" every now and then. :o I imagine it could be a little painful depending on how impacted they are, but it's over with quickly. The vet could tell you more. Molly seems more upset that I'm holding her tightly, than on her butt. She licks a bit to make sure everything is clean (she is FASTIDIOUS) and she seems fine.

I hope the vetty appointment goes well - you sure are armed with data! Interesting on the trends - maybe different parts of the year, heat, cold, etc?

Hi Ella, good luck with Rusty's Vetty appt. tomorrow. Maggie just had hers today, kind of a quarterly one. Lisa right above me has info on the anal sacs expression. Sorry about the paddle cancellation. Yes, weather there is unpredictable, here, too, sometimes. We're enjoying cooler weather finally. Nice numbers for Rusty today. Have a good night. Hugs from us.

It's really easy if they aren't impacted.
And just like a skunk with a fear response, they express them themselves.
Shadow did at her vet appt last week, just as the vet was looking. She said, oh, she just emptied her own.... she didn't do it.

Good luck with the vet visit tomorrow, Ella. I will be interested to hear how it went.

What lovely numbers today! At least, Shasta and I would be happy with those numbers!!!! Hope the vetty visit goes well. Best wishes on the anal sacs. Shasta has anal sac issues and man, oh man...what a pain. Luckily, the vet should be able to help Rusty out with the issue. Good luck!!!

Nice numbers today Rusty! I see green!

Good luck tomorrow Ella. And yes, anal sac expression is a very easy procedure. I have elsa's done every three months or so. She's had issues in the past, so I routinely take her in to have that done. I will need to try Lisa's method. That would save me a few pennies!

Have a great evening!

Muffin has to have her anal glands done about every six months. Rumpy the drooler about every 4 months. Sending good vetty vines tomorrow to Rusty.
