10/22/18 - Sooo hungry

AMPS not done yet, usual time is 7am, currently is 5am were I live.

Harley woke me up about 4:30 because he completely scoured my room tearing it apart for food. I finally woke up enough to decide to give him a "snack" because after the room destruction he proceeded just to sit at the end of my bed crying and scratching his food bowl. I noticed yesterday he was hungrier than usual again too. He scarfed down his snack and is content now.

Today is when the vet is suppose to call me back so (hopefully) I can get him on every 12 hours and not this 24 hour thing - if not then I know I have my answer to move back to our old vet in town.

Going to go try and catch a nap before I wake up for the day with AMPS and his shot! :)

My Luci used to be the same way - she wanted to eat the minute my foot hit the floor in the mornings! I would give her a few of these 0 carb treats to hold her over until feeding time (AMPS or PMPS)...you may want to try these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00II6TGV2/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

They come in chicken, salmon and liver (stinky, but Luci thinks they're marvelous!)...just a thought :)
 
Robin, if you like this vet otherwise, you could just go to every 12 hrs and not tell him until the next time you have to bring Harley in. Then you bring your ss with you to show him how it worked better.

Thank you, I may do that too. Only for the fact I really did like him, he was an awesome vet (new to us, we just moved to a small little town). Plus I know the way our old vet works she'll want a visit and everything I just spent to get my foot going with treating this has super sunk me at the moment (FT senior at Uni doing my FT internship (unpaid) paying bills with savings right now so I can get through it, haha).

He also was one that didn't want me testing at home and I immediately went home and proceeded to start testing and making the spread sheet.

AMPS 409 - not surprised right now A. because we've only done 1u/24hrs and B. that snack.

I really hope this shot thing gets easier for me! I got myself so psyched this morning... the first few days he was a champ, noticed but didn't mind. Yesterday he jumped really good and did not take ear pricks *at all*. Today while eating breakfast and going to give him his shot he completely stopped eating and ran away from me. I had to go get him, pet him, love him, while he was munching, and try again. Anytime i'd go to start scruffing he'd run. So I finally just sat with him on the couch, he jumped good again, and then I immediately took him back to food. I'm doing the tent method and also the fur between thumb and pointer finger, rolling the wrist to expose skin, and going in the skin, that is what he hated the most. Of course when he jumps I get nervous and then my nerves set in which I am sure doesn't help me perform at all. *sigh* - we will get there... I just hate feeling like I am hurting him.

Also will be checking like a curve today - hoping we didn't get another fur shot. Fur wasn't wet, or smelly, but when I pulled the needle out I got a whiff of insulin real quick... Will be *so* stinking bummed if we did, specially at those numbers.
 
I agree. You don't need the vet's "permission" to dose BID. It has been proven to work much better than SID. I saw you are feeding DM kibble with plans to switch to DM canned. I'm not sure if anyone has told you that you can give Fancy Feast or Friskies or any other canned pates that are low carb. As for the testing issues, play with his scruff when it is NOT testing times and give a treat each time so he understands it's not a bad thing.

I have seen the foods that can be fed. I am planning on switching to one of those. I am looking at B.F.F I use to actually feed it quit often to my old girl because she will not eat soft *unless* it is tuna. I also saw B.F.F has some low phospho, which would work well to switch all my kitties over on because my old girl has renal disease.

Also i've been trying to give him extra loves every time I see him out and about so I will also start working in the scruff and such, thank you.
 
Hello, I had to chime in when I read your Harley is famished. IMO, the food you are giving is over priced junk. 2nd, 3rd, 4th ingredients are soy and corn gluten meal....….junk. I also believe the carb count is 13%; recommendation for diabetics is under 10%. I would urge you to get on a low carb canned diet as soon as you can.

I noticed that once my cats diabetes was controlled he was not nearly as hungry and he stared to gain some of the weight he lost. You may need to free feed or feed larger quantity, more often until his numbers are better.

I ditto other opinions about giving insulin every 12 hours.
 
Feel like we maybe got some insulin in the system and it wasn't just a fur/air shot?

Cool. I feel a bit better.

I know it isn't the popular vote (and it isn't my popular option either) but I called the vet and finally spoke to him. He knows Lantus is dosed every 12 hours but he wanted to get a feel for how he does on it dosed only once a day for 7 days. Our appointment is in a couple more days. He said from there he will test BG's and give us a new dosing schedule to follow. He also didn't want me testing at home but I asked/ told him I was testing at home because I couldn't get myself not to and inject him, I was charting it for him, and if I could bring my meter in at our check up and when they test his BGs if they could also test him on mine so I could get a calibration. He replied with "that is doable, we will see you soon!"

So for now I am going to give him his 7 days of only 1 shot every 24 hours - because he is seeming to work with me and listen with me. So I will give him a chance and see how it goes at our checkup.
 
Good plan. I bring my meter everytime. I actually pack a bag with everything I might need in case I hit traffic, gone longer than planned.
