Howdy LL,

I am posting a wee bit late but i just got home with my munchkin and he's just as happy as a clam to be home. We walked in the door and he flopped on the floor, rolled around playing with his nanner and purred up a storm.

I saw his belly today when i got to my parents place and i just about cried when i saw how bad it actually was  I still cannot believe he did this to himself. I spoke to my mom and she told me about when she noticed he had done this. She said that she noticed he was grooming his belly quite a bit on Saturday morning and didn't think anything of it, then she noticed that Leo was actually pulling and ripping his fur and skin off and that's when she told my dad and they rushed Leo to the vet. I can't even begin to fathom why he did this, and i don't think i ever will.

I've attached a few pictures of his belly and his tshirt.

Wow...that is a serious owie! How's Leo doing now? Is he off the bupe? He's really cute and his t-shirt is adorable. Hlooks just like an orange version of my Mario, who is a gray "tuxedo tabby".

Yeah he's off the bupe, he had his last dose yesterday at lunch and hopefully he isn't in too much pain. I just need him to take it easy over the next few day so he doesn't rip open his owie.

Oh Tracy! I bet you are really glad to be home. Poor Leo! I like his shirt but owie on the other pictures. Hope you both get some much needed rest!

LEO, you are a doll in the tee-shirt...but dear god, young man...why on earth did you do that to yourself???

wow - and omg... poor Leo! How difficult this must be for you. Mannie and I wish Leo a speedy recovery.

He does look cute in his shirt though - very handsome Leo! Nice numbers too!

Oh dear, Leroy's tummy is just awful. I can't imagine why he would do that. He looks like he is feeling ok and I'm glad he is home with his mama bean. The t-shirt is just the most adorable thing...quite the fashion statement. Big hugs to you and Leo tonight.

Tracy, that wound looks pretty serious! Are you sure he did it to himself for no apparent reason? Maybe he encountered an animal (porcupine?) (snake?) and got some quills or venom in him and was trying to get it out? Maybe he was bitten by an animal he captured and was "disembowling"? (the wound is right in the spot where cats "sit" on their pray). Poor Leo! I hope that he heals up very soon and that he can keep the bandage/t-shirt on. It can't be good for him to go outside and not be protected from dirt and germs.

Anyway, we're so glad you're home and that Leo appears to be OK and that he is feeling better. Hang in there. More healing vines are on the way!!

I'm not sure about the animal, snake stuff Ella. As far as I know there are only garter snakes around here, porcupines wouldn't go unnoticed by my parents dogs, but I wasn't home to see what happened and at that point my parents weren't watching him like a hawk. Who knows what actually happened. His wound is healing, it's all dried up and you probably can't see that from the picture. He was still trying to lick it today before I got home apparently but he hasn't tried licking it since I've had him.

Ella may be onto something...maybe he had pain there for goodness knows what reason and was trying to ease it...

that actually sounds much less concerning than to think he was self-mutilating
(just my opinion...but physical is so much easier to think than some mental distress)

Well Leo's vet thinks he was self mutilating due to pain from his dental, or the stress of it all. My parents think the same thing as well, me? I'm not entirely sold on that idea. I think it was either the dental stress or an allergic reaction to the Weruva cat food that just got out of control. I know he didn't spend too much time outside those few days since it was freezing cold here last weekend, I asked my dad.

Oh my, poor Leo!! I can only imagine what it must have been like for you coming home to that. ((hugs)) So glad he is on the road to recovery... and he is looking positively adorable in his wife beater! I'm sure he'll be back in mousing shape in no time!!

Oh.my.goodness!!! It looks like just a bit more and he would have gone all the way through to his abdominal cavity!! I have heard of animals doing themselves an injury with licking from pain, but my God. I would have freaked seeing that!! I sure hope whatever caused him to do that to himself has gone away. So, he's going to end up being the most ungroomed cat around because you're not going to let him lick himself at any time, huh? I know that would be me!! I know you both must be so happy to have each other for the next week....cuddle up a storm!!!

oh poor leo! i can't imagine what could've hurt him that he would've done that to himself. glad he's got his wifebeater to protect his cute little belly. you must've been so shocked to see that - your folks are angels. they take such good care of him.

glad you're home and getting a break with you little guy.

Hi Tracy, Leo looks so cute in the tee shirt! Oh my, ouchie with the belly and sending vines for continued healing and comfort. The way Leo is laying and looking so relaxed, he must be feeling better. I know you must be so glad to be home. Hugs.

*gasp* what an awful wound!!! I'm adding my vote for some kind of outside irritation. Maybe a spider bite? Goodnees, but I'm glad to hear he's on the road to recovery!

Oh my gosh .. that wound looks horrible! Poor leo .. I hope he isn't in to much pain and that his belly heals up quickly ...

Is it spreading at all or really healing up? I'd think it was a serious skin infection that he has - like cellulitis or something similar. Wow he must be feeling that. I doubt that came about from licking alone. He got the two week antibiotic shot right?
