Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

Good morning Carla, One thing I've learned on my very short time of dealing with FD is you're going to have emotions that are sometimes very high and sometimes very low depending on the number that appears on the BG meter screen. Hang in there Furball will stop playing with you and get his # down. I sure everyone here felt a bit discouraged and defeated at times but the great thing is we all have this wonderful island here to rest on when the water rises too high for us. Have a great day and Furball get with the program.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

Furball's ear still bothering her? Hope she gets better soon.
That yellow is not too bad after a fur shot. Dont worry Carla. It's important to woe her to eat more. Have you tried other flavored can?

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

Oh RATS! That stinks. I hate that - it's so frustrating when you are working so hard to do all the right things. Hopefully the high numbers only last for a bit and Furball is back on track. Thanks for your wishes for our travel!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

I hate the fur shots too! Hope she comes down for you today!

Jo

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

I know how frustrating those furshots can be.
I think it helps a lot to go back and stare at your own ss and look at the whole picture....
The progress you have made makes you feel better than just dwelling on a few numbers.
You'll get right back on track.
And I hope Furballs ear is getting better.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307

Carla, not to worry, as fur shots happen, and Furball will get back on track. I made so many furshots in the beginning days and do still make them. Sending appy vines for Furball. Would she eat some baby food Stage 2 Beechnut chicken and there's also a Beechnut Ham that's good. Maggie loves the Gerber Stage 2 chicken & gravy, but it does have corn starch. Thanks for checking on Maggie. Keep us posted. Hugs.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Furball is not eating today. At AMPS she only nibbled at her food. As I was getting ready to leave for church, she threw up. It was just saliva since she had not really eaten. I stayed home to keep an eye on her and she acts like she doesn't feel good. She just wanted to sleep. Anything I have tried to give her seems to make her seem nauseaus (sp?) She leans her head back like get it away from me and licks her lips. I had some Cerenia left from when she was diagnosed in Feb. I gave her 1/4 of a tab a little while ago. I am hoping that will help her get her appy back and a vet trip won't be required. I would have to go to the emergency vet today if she needs to go. I would like to avoid that, but will go if necessary.

Ketone check was negative.

I will probably be going to the store in a little while to get some baby food and see if she will eat it. (Thanks Ann & Maggie for the types to look for). I've never given her baby food so I don't know if she'll like it.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

ETA: Her BG at +5.5=284

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

I wish I had advise to give, but all I have is a big ole virtual ((hug)). Sending better tummy vines for Furball and deep breathing vines for you!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

I hope the Cerenia helps her. Do you have/have you tried Fortiflora? Freeze dried chicken? I'd let her anything you can her to.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Carla, sending vines for Furball and hoping the bf helps. Anne & Muffin above also have some good suggestions.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Beechnut doesn't "stage" it's food. You need to make sure all that's in the food is a protein (ham, chicken, etc.) and broth. Gerber Stage 2 is fine. It has some cornstarch in it but it's not bad carb-wise (about 7%).

Let's hope she's just "off" her food today. As it turns out, the fur shot was well timed!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

I found some Beechnut Homestyle Chicken & Chicken Broth. I could not find the ones Ann & Maggie mentioned. My Kroger is limited in the baby food they sell. Furball will not eat it. She didn't act like it was going to make her throw up this time. She just looked like what are you doing. I think that is an improvement. She wasn't licking her lips. Maybe the Cerenia is helping and I just need to give it a little longer. I tried FortiFlora once before with my cats and they wouldn't touch the food it was on. I don't have anything freeze dried. I don't even know where in the grocery store you would look for that.

Furball's eyes look better. She doesn't look like she feels bad any more. I am hoping I can get her to eat this evening at shot time. I will try again one more time in a little while. I am meeting my Mom for dinner in about 1 1/2 hours. It is her birthday. I will be back by Furball's PM shot time and hopefully she'll eat then.

Thanks for the advice. If someone can tell me where to find the freeze dried chicken, I'll look for it. At this point, I am just wanting her to eat and don't care what it is. Once she eats, I can adjust her insulin.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

((((Carla))))) My whole condo today is practically about Moonie not wanting any of her fuds!!
She finally ate some HC-because she had dropped to 58...
When Moonie doesnt or wont eat, I try cooked chicken, turkey, or a little beef--Last night I gave her a small piece of chuck steak that I had cooked...she gobbled that up right away...Sometimes she eats, sometimes NOT!! It si the MOST FRUSTRATING thing for LL~anders!!!! Hope the Cerenia does it;s trick..
I try to trick Moonie ton eat cat food, by sticking bits of chiclken into her cat fuds--sometimes it works~~sometimes NOT ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile nailbite_smile --
Hope today turns around for you!!==I get freeze dried chicken on amazon.com & it can be as cheap as $7.00 for a box of livalittles a freeze dried chicken Moonie used to love--Havent tried it in a long time...
Hope your day gets a lot better--Hugs & Lv from us!

BTW--You might not want to do this when she is high, but you know I give MOonie Temptations, as she will almost alwyas eat those--they are 2 calories & dont know the carb content, but she loves them..Gotta watch carbs closely cats--just an FYI

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Hi Carla,
I hope that Furball is feeling better this afternoon. It sounds from your description that she was nauseous (lip licking, refusing food), so the Cerenia was a good choice. Is there any particular food that she really likes? You might try feeding that one to her, and adding some water to it (always a good idea in any event). When Rusty had pancreatitis he didn't want to eat much, but he would always eat his favorite food: FF Turkey & giblets.
Furball might just have a case of upset stomach, in which it will probably resolve itself. But keep your eye out for vomiting, etc.
Hang in there and don't worry about the consecutive fur shots (I have done this more than once!!). Furball will recover

I buy "Whole Life" freeze-dried 100% chicken treats from PetFoodDirect.com:
http://www.petfooddirect.com/Product/7336/Whole-Life-Pure-Chicken-Pet-Treats
They are excellent quality and are made (and sourced) in the USA (be careful about pet treats from China!!)
They sound expensive, but you get a lot in a 4-oz bag.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

BTW Ella (Rusty) & I are the Queen of the fur shots on occassion, & we have learned that thankfully they do pass. most of the time, at the next shot, so dont worry!! HUgs!!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Morning Carla - so sorry you are having appy issue with Furball this morning. I hope it is just an off day that she will feel better soon. I hope the cerenia helps. I have used baby food for Mannie too - he likes the gerber chicken.

I have bought the freeze dried chicken at my local pet store: Petco, or Petsmart. Sometime I have had to buy the ones sized for dogs, but they will also be ok for cats. They also have a freeze dried shrimp too. You just have to watch for the country of origin.

Hang in there. I know all too well how you feel. One makes such great progress and then for whatever reason you seem to have taken several steps backwards. It is ever so disheartening, Fur shots are never fun, but Furball will recover from them.

I will be thinking of you guys today. Be well Furball!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Hi Carla-
My heart goes out to you and I'm sending you a :YMHUG: virtually. Praying that Furball will eat for you. I know when our FB was not eating the vet prescribed mirtazapine (yes, very odd that its an antipressant) but it seemed to work.

Hang in there. I can not imagine how discouraging this can be for you.

Karen

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

I tried the baby food again and Furball still has no interest in it. I am getting ready to leave for dinner with my Mom. Hopefully she'll eat this evening.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Hi Carla, we are there with you about the no eating. Zener has bouts of this all the time. All the things we've tried food wise are already mentioned. We have to use an appy stimulant, called cyprhexadine, every few days and since it is not a good idea to use an appy stimulant if a cat is nauseated, we have him on anti-nausea meds too. He takes ondansetron, 1mg twice a day, and 1/4 tab cerenia every other day. When he would vomit and not eat, we would get the cerenia injections for a few days, since he was not likely absorbing the tablets. Nothing has ever come back positive with him for pancreatitis or IBD, so our vet suspects it is the FD. We know how frustrating, exasperating, and worrisome the not eating can be. Hang in there, we are with you! As someone one told me here on LL - those fur shots, just a few misses among thousands that go well. Paws crossed the evening is better for you and Furball. :YMHUG:

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Carla

Do you have any parmesan cheese? If you maybe sprinkle a little of that on her food, she will perhaps eat? usually ondansetron is better for nausea than cerenia but it doesn't hurt to give her the cerenia....it can help.

Can you finger feed her....either see if she will lick food off your finger or will she let you dab some on the front of her tongue or on the roof of her mouth? Just be careful that it's only a small amount and that you don't get it down her throat.

Here's some info Jill often posts when a kitty won't eat:Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

I hope that is somewhat helpful. I buy my Whole Life freeze dried chicken treats at DogCatSupply.com. It's the cheapest place I've found and they are fast. I buy the 21 oz bags.

I know you will worry while you are out but I hope you can enjoy your visit with your DM. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HER!

Happy Birthday to your mom!!

Eat Furball, Eat!

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Hi Carla, Dang about the fur shots, we have all been there and its so aggravating. Sorry Furball is not eating, sending more appy vines for her cat_pet_icon We have had luck with people tuna in water to get our cats to eat wet food, they snarfed it right down. Jasper can't resist a little plain greek yogurt and he likes a lick of nacho cheese dip too, just have to make sure it has no onion or garlic. Happy birthday to your Mom! Hope Furball's appetite picks up soon.

Re: 10/21 Furball, AMPS=307 Not Eating - Advice Needed

Had a good dinner and visit with my Mom and Stepdad. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Furball ate about 1 teaspoon of baby food at PMPS. She was not interested in her normal food. Her eyes still look like she feels better. I gave her her usual shot this evening since I will be home to monitor. I will try to get her to eat something else in a little while. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will have to see what I have in the house. If she is still not eating in the morning, I may have to go out and buy something. I have tomorrow scheduled off, so I don't have to go to work.
