update on the Civvies

Hi all,

I wanted to thank you all for the vines and prayers for my Bubby. I took him back to the Vet today, his temp is almost back to normal, but he was still not eating. The Vet thinks that he has a viral infection so he did B/W, and checked him all over, including his teeth. He said it was difficult to tell if the teeth were bothering him because Bubbs is so squirmy. The B/W was all normal, and they repeated the leukemia and FIV test since it was done in March when Bubby entered the shelter and could have been in the incubation period. Thankfully that test was negative. They also gave SubQs while we were there.

The Vet sent us home with Mirtazapine for his appy. And said to just keep an eye on him. If things don't improve or if it gets worse to bring him back. As soon as we got home, he had a couple of bites of food ... On his own! Hooray! He wouldn't eat at dinner time so I syringed maybe a third of a can of max cal. After that and meds, he ate 1/4 can of friskies... On his own! Woo hoo! A couple minutes ago, he had a couple more bites. I hope this means he is starting to feel better and is on the road to being healthy again.

Before we left, the Vet talked to me about FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) because he still thinks this is a viral thing, and if it isn't FIP he isn't sure what it would be. He said there isn't a good test for FIP since it is related to the carona virus and most cats have the carona virus antibodies, so the test could give a false positive. I did read about FIP tonight, it's a fatal disease. I sure hope Bubby doesn't have that!

Does anyone have any experience with FIP? Just wondering if there is anything that I can/should do, or need to watch out for.

Hugs, prayers and vines to all that need them tonight.

Thanks,
Kathie

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

Kathie, I don't know anything about FIP, but I sure hope that Bubby doesn't have it. Sending lots and lots of healing vines tonight.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

I've had FIP kittens of an FIP mother in foster care. Once it takes hold, there's really nothing you can do. It's an awful disease and I pray that Bubby doesn't have it.

I know you've done a lot of research...just in case you didn't see this one, it's one of the more clear descriptions of FIP

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

My experience working at a volunteer shelter has been the same as Chris's. There are two forms...wet and dry and the wet causes a fluid buildup. Both are always fatal and usually pretty quick once symptoms develop.

Prayers for Bubba.

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

Thank you, Ella. I'm praying that it's not FIP. Thanks for the vines.

Chris, thanks for the link. That is a very good site, it's actually the first one that I found yesterday. Thanks for your prayers.

Thanks Michelle, we could use those positive thoughts and vines.

Marje, thank you. I'm praying that it's not FIP.

Bubby seems a little better today, though he didn't want any breffis. He ate a few times last night, and I did leave some food out overnight, though it doesn't look like much was eaten. So, I syringed more Max Cal, at least he will have a little nutrition in his tummy.

Thinking of all ailing kitties and beans, prayers, hugs and vines to all that need them.
Kathie

Sending healing vines and appetite vines to Bubby.

Come Bubby, pull through and feel better.

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

Sending prayers for you and Bubba. I hope it's not FIP and he gets better soon.

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

FWIW, my civvie, George (GA) tested positive for corona virus. He was really sick at the time of the test -- probably the kitty equivalent of the flu kind of sick. George lived to be 20+ years old. It obviously wasn't FIP but it was likely some form of related virus.

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

My friend just lost her cat to FIP .. she adopted him as a kitten through a shelter and he was pretty sick I guess .. diarrhea and stuff like that .. seemed to get a little better, but eventually just got sick again .. she had to put him down not too long ago .. He was a very sick kitty towards the end .. I pray that is not what Bubby has ..

Re: 10/21 Loose lips, Bubby update and FIP?

Fingers, paws, and tails crossed it's not FIP! I hope Bubby gets to feeling better soon. Healing vines headed your way, lil Bubby!

Many, many cats will test positive for the corona virus so, as Sienne inferred, it's not a good indicator of FIP. There really is no way to dx it. It's usually speculatively diagnosed by progressive symptoms and how sick the Kitty gets.

More prayers for Bubba.

Thank you Dyana, we can use the vines

Carla, thank you. I hope it isn't FIP

Sienne, thank you. I think sometimes my Vet tries to give me the worst case scenario first, as then if it's not FIP I will be happy. With any luck, whatever is going on will clear up with the Ab's and he will be fine afterwards.... Of course, I am still worried about the worst scenario. :YMSIGH:

Thank you Devon! That does sound awful. I'm so sorry for your friend losing her cat.

Hi Tara, that's a lot of crossing, but we sure do appreciate it.

Thanks for the prayers Marje! I love the power of prayer here in LL. and just to add a few more prayers, there was a blessing of the animals nearby over the weekend, so I went.

Update on Bubby, last night he was very cuddly - he hadn't been cuddly for a few days. As for today. I syringe fed this morning, then he had a couple of bites on his own. I'm not sure if he ate during the day. Tonight he had a couple of bites when I got home from work, and then (you can stop reading here....) he had explosive diarrhea, just once so far but it was a lot. It must be from the abrupt food change... I've been syringing Iams Max Cal... Or maybe the AB's.

Hopefully he will feel better in the AM, and will eat and drink on his own

Hugs to all. Prayers and vines to all that need them tonight,
Kathie

Sending lots and lots of healing vines to Bubby and praying it is not FIP
And sending you :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

More healing and good appy vines for Bubby! Hope it is just a virus that will clear up in it's own sweet time (but quickly please!)

Hugs Kathie cat_pet_icon

I agree with Carla. Some FortiFlora may help with the diarrhea. I always try to give a probiotic a few hours after giving ABs.
Sending vines for him to get better soon. I hope Bubby is feeling a bit more his healthy self today.
