Hi all

I just noticed that my cat woke up suddenly while sleeping on my lap and was breathing heavily with his mouth open. He then jumped onto the floor and fell asleep then tried to get up and stumbled side ways. He seemed to regroup and walk away fine towards the front door to stalk some birds through the gate.

I panicked as I haven’t seen him like that before and tested his glucose and it was 202, I also used the Freestyle Optimum Neo ketone reader and it showed 0.5 for ketones which I believe is under what they note as concerning. Their range is 0.6 above.

Tried to give him some churu as he hasn’t been eating all that well yesterday and squirted some on his food to get him to try to eat.

Is this concerning? I don’t know if this is normal for a diabetic cat or not? Please help very scared.

How is he nowAimee?
I’m glad you testing the BG as that was my first thought.
The 0.5 ketones is not of concern.
That is not normal for a diabetic cat so I would ring your vet and tell him what happening. It may be nothing but I would not ignore it.
I would also recheck the BG again

Hi Bron

Thanks for checking in, I thought he was going into Hypo but looks like that’s not it. I’ll give my vet a call the actual two that look after Ernie aren’t in today but I’ll try speaking to one of the others.

I might wait till 1pm and try again. I wonder if it’s the lack of eating that’s causing this along with insulin on board?

Do you know what is considered normal ketones in a diabetic cat? I always thought it had to be zero and any reading was bad. Almost had a heart attack.

Looks like his numbers are coming down nicely today.

From this post in the Health Links forum: Ketones, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and Blood Ketone Meters
The latest published research/studies in cats indicate ketones will begin to show up at readings of 2.4 and 2.55 on a blood ketone meter:
