Don't forget the magic chicken dust. . .

The bad part is he is getting smart and just licking the surface of the food with the magic chicken dust on it and not eating as much food as he needs to.

I know you free feed Apollo. You may want to give him half of his usual amount at shot time. You can then put down more later and/or divide it up if you need to in order to feed the curve. Just a thought....

That is a good idea. The only problem is the AMPS and PMPS feedings are only times I can sequester him and monitor how much he is eating. Plus make sure he is actually eating enough. He grazes after that along with my other 2 cats. It seems like he isn't eating as much as he was when we first switched to the wet food? That has me a little concerned. He is eating about 75% of a 3oz can twice a day. Then again he was always a slow, picky eater on the dry food as well.

Clever kitty. . .

Did you feed that +3/98? If so, what and how much?

Yeah I gave him maybe a half teaspoon of LC and Gravy mixed together with chicken dust.

Keep in mind that with the onset of diabetes, cats can be ravenous because when their food is metabolized into glucose, the glucose isn't getting into the cells. Instead, it's floating around in the blood. As a cat becomes better regulated, the glucose is going where it's supposed to and the cat's appetite appropriately decreases.

Test again at +3.5 OK?

Now that his numbers are lower he may not feel so driven to eat. BK went from 15oz per day to 6 oz per day (although he did have about 4-5 lbs to put on).
FYI - some cats feed their own curve.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

Is it ok to wait until +4? I am going through these strips like water and they cost a fortune.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

Up to you.
You want to avoid a steep dive, which can cause a big bounce

I remember nights like these. . or when I'd be stalling for a shootable number - I'd go through 4 or 5 strips an hour.
What meter do you use? I use the Bayer Contour and I find great deals on ebay.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

Not bad. . .we ran low one time and had to get strips at the local Rite-Aid...they were 60 bucks for 50 !
Needless to say we never let our strips get that low again. . .

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

That's a lot for strips. The most I pay for Contour strips is $26 for 50 on Amazon or Hocks. I've gotten incredible deals on Ebay but you need to check the expiration date.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

I saw the Relion from Walmart with really cheap strips, but I read lots of people complained about inaccurate readings. Scared me away from that option. Ok next reading time. Brb.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98

Yeah, I have found incredible deals on ebay as well. Back when I used to by them by the hundreds, I could sometimes get as low as $19 for 50...

Sienne is right - you've got to pay attention to the exp. dates. when buying on ebay

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98, +4 97

Apollo's PMPS +4 is 97. Feed him again or give it some more time? If feed, LC, MC, or HC?

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98, +4 97

If it was me, I'd let it ride and check again in an hour. . .he may have a surf going. . .

Let's see what Sienne thinks. . .

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +1 157, +2 123, +3 98, +4 97

What an exciting day I missed!!! You did great today, John, and it looks like Apollo has a great surf going for you. Nice work!

I also use a OT Ultra Mini which I love. I get the strips on ebay all the time and I pay between $22-25/50. I only buy from top rated sellers, I don't usually bid, I only buy strips that have a later expiration date (usually at least four months from present time), I rarely pay for shipping, and I make sure the boxes are described as "undamaged, unopened".

A couple things: it's a very smart thing to get a +2 every cycle. It will usually give you alot of info. If he's down by 50 or so at +2, you can expect he might have a busy cycle. When Gracie was on lantus, we alway alway always got a +2. The other thing is that it does often help to spread out the feedings. Many of us do a PS feeding and then again at +1, +2, +3. That helps to manage the curve. We have multiple cats, too, and have to supervise the feedings to be sure Gracie gets hers and the kitten does not.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +2 123, +3 98, +4 97, +5 148

Apollo's PMPS +5 is 148. I put out some LC for grazing. Ok to go to bed now? I'm beat.

Re: 10/2 Apollo PMPS 158, +2 123, +3 98, +4 97, +5 148

If you know once he starts up, he doesn't wobble, then it's ok to go to bed. This looks like a pretty good rising number but if you fed him any HC or karo, it could wear off and he could turn around but you are also getting to mid-cycle. This is where "know thy cat" comes into play :-D

Hope you get some rest...once you go to bed. If you feel uncomfy about it, set your phone alarm for two hours and recheck just to be sure.
