Intro to my new babies

Good morning LL,

I still miss doing a daily condo. Even though I don't post often, I do visit condos almost everyday to keep up with how you all are doing. Today, I found two used test strips, as I was digging out the cat carrier. It made me smile thinking about my Zeus man.

A month ago tomorrow, I brought home two new fur kids, Snickers (I call her Snickerdoodle) and Calvin (I've been trying out names for him, I called him Sylvester for a while, but it's not rolling off the tongue yet. Last night I started calling him Bubba and Bubby).

They have been doing well, making tons of progress, as long as Snickers isn't allowed to hide. When she hides she becomes this other cat, scared and withdrawn. As long as she stays out in the open, she is wonderful. She isn't a cuddler but she loves to be petted and told how pretty she is (she is a dilute calico) She loves to play with toys, and really loves to race around the house in the middle of the night.

Bubby is a very sweet guy (big black and white guy), he is really a cuddler and loves to knead. Unfortunately, he is not feeling well today. He didn't really eat yesterday, or drink any water. I took him to the Vet this morning, and he has a really high fever, 105 point something nailbite_smile  @-) The vet doesn't know what the cause is, but it may be a chipped tooth. He talked about pulling it or getting X-rays to see if it might be the cause. Anyway, it took the Vet to hold Bubby so that the tech could give fluids. He sent me home with two antibiotics, clavamox and Baytril. I'm also supposed to syringe water and food. If he gets worse I will bring him to the ER, otherwise call them with an update on Monday. I am so nervous and worried for him. Any thoughts as to what else I might be able to do for him?

Snickers knows that Bubba isn't feeling well. I just got this picture of them laying next to each other (I've never seen them do that).

If you could please send some vines our way, we'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much,

Kathie

Kathie, I'm sorry your Buddy has such a high fever. I am sending strong feel better and healing vines to him and some snowflakes to cool him a bit. I hope his temperature comes down with the ABs.

Do you know how to take his temperature at home? I use a digital thermometer on J.D. It's real quick, like 6 seconds.
I just used to not hold it in far enough and would get a reading like 96 and would freak because it said he was too low.
I think you're supposed to hold it in like over an inch.

Thanks Dyana and Sienne.

No I don't really know how to take the temp at home. He is really REALLY awful with stuff like that so I'm not sure that I will be able to even attempt it (it took two of us this morning). I'm going to go get a thermometer so that I can try tomorrow, today I have to syringe him and try to pill him.... That is not going to be fun. Wish me luck nailbite_smile

There is a great video on the Feline Assisted Feeding yahoo group page on syringe feeding. Right now, though, it's not working for me. I see the home page but the link to the video doesn't work. Maybe it will work for you. Tons of vines for your guy.

I don't know how I missed your original post about your new babies, Kathie!! Congratulations! They are two lucky kitties :-D

Sending mega get well vines for Bubba. I hope the ABs do the trick and get him feeling better. I hope you can get them down him without too much trouble.

Thinking of you guys cat_pet_icon

Thanks Carla, Liz and Mariko. Syringe feeding is not going well, even with the towel burrito, darn he is strong! Bubba almost got me in the face when he leapt out of the burrito this afternoon, but he stopped himself (I think it surprised him a little).

Liz, I wasn't able to get to the video either, but Thank you  I had watched one months ago when I tried to syringe Zeus. She made it look so easy, LOL.

I was able to pill him successfully this afternoon. First two times he spit it out, but the third time was a success! If only I had gotten a picture of his facial expression, it was priceless. :o

The good news is that I think his fever is coming down, his body doesn't feel as hot as it was. Now I wish he would eat and drink on his own.

Miss Snickers is watching over Bubba carefully, LOL.

Thanks so much for the vines and prayers.

Kathie, sending lots of healing vines to Bubba.

Fluids should help in bringing down the fever. Marje also told me that she wrapped Tobey in cool (damp) towels when he was a kitten & needed to get his fever down. The ABs will help, too, once they kick in.

If you can't get a temperature on Bubba you can sometimes tell if they have a fever by feeling their heads - ears are usually warm, but if you're used to petting him yet, like kids you can sometimes guage when they're too warm. But - a thermometer is best.

Sure hope Bubba perks up quickly fo you - they're both really cute & I agree with Jane - very lucky to have each other & you!

I had to pill Tillie too. She was not happy. Be sure to follow with some water, about 1 ml, to make sure the pill gets washed down. Sending tons of vines for Zeus. I don't know what's going on with the FAF web page. Practice makes perfect, that's what I found when I had to syringe feed Zener one time. :-D

Hi Jane, looks like I missed your post earlier. Thanks for everything!

Thanks Suzanne! Yeah, he def won't let me get a temp but I could tell that he was really hot, I mean really hot! Tonight his body is cooler - still warm but not hot like it was. His head is also not as hot, and his ears feel cooler. I feel confident that his fever is coming down.

I gave Bubba the 2nd clavamox dose a few minutes ago, he was not happy. Uh oh, now he is coughing... Probably trying to get that taste out of his mouth, LOl.

I need to try to syringe more watered down food soon. Gosh I hope he starts eating on his own by morning. Saying my prayers, be a good boy Bubba. cat_pet_icon

(((Kathie))))

Oh gosh, somehow I missed you got two babies!! I'm so sorry so let my offer my congrats! they are both gorgeous and have no idea how lucky they are.

While an infected tooth might cause a fever, I'd be surprised if a broken one would cause that much of a temp. It's also odd to me that he gave Bubba clavamox AND baytril. Clavamox is a really good mulit-purpose A/B but Baytril is typically for the urinary tract and esp kidney infections. IMHO, it's not such a good idea to give two A/Bs like that but he must have had some reason for it??? There are no signs of an upper respiratory? It could possibly be why he doesn't want to eat...can't smell his food. Any runny eyes, sneezes, etc?

One thing you can do when his fever is up is wrap him in cool, wet towels. 105 is a significant fever and should be brought down ASAP. The cool towel wraps work really well.

I hope you can get him to eat. It's a good idea to add water to the food so he can stay hydrated. Have you tried any baby food for him? Something with only the chicken or turkey in it....no broth or cornstarch (I use Beechnut).

Sending him healing vines. Please keep us posted. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Hi (((Marje))),

Thank you, they are good kitties, and have been adjusting. Bubba hasn't been sneezing, and no runny eyes, but he did a lot of coughing last night. Sounded like he was trying to hack up a hairball. More coughing tonight after the clavamox. I haven't tried baby food today, but I did try warming up his food, tried the Iams max cal, and tried human tuna (he did have a few bites right after we got home from the Vet), and I added warm water to all. I hope he starts to eat tomorrow. If not, I will bring him to the ER vet. His fever does feel like it has decreased, hopefully it will be normal in the morning and remain that way.

Fingers crossed!
