Leroy had another one of those panting/lip smacking episodes, only this time it sounded very wet, like he was trying to cough up mucous or something:shock: Then he spent several minutes afterwards licking his lips and swallowing hard. Yes, got it on video again and stayed up a bit late to upload it to Youtube and send it off to Dr. B.

I won't hear back from Dr. B until this afternoon at the earliest. He usually doesn't get in until 1pm and while he can check email on his iPhone, he can't play YouTube videos. I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with Leroy nailbite_smile Although I wouldn't be (too) surprised if he did. It's just my luck to have a pet or two with health issues @-)

Just sent the video to the vet at work for his opinion again. He got the cookies I left on his desk on Monday and loves them :-D It's such a process to give him cookes @-) His office is a few blocks away in a different building from where I work. So I have to get to work a bit early to head over there first. And I can't just leave a box of cookies on his desk with a note because they would just disappear before he even arrives to work (has happened before). It's an open cubicle-like area over there. So I have to put the cookies in a paper bag and staple it closed to keep prying eyes out. I don't like going there at the end of my day to drop the cookies off because then people who work in the nearby cubicles (unfortunately, all of management in the department I work in :-| ) will be asking why the vet gets cookies and they don't :?

Leroy sure is one cute boy!

Simon sometimes does almost the same thing. It will sound like he is kind of hacking or making a huffing sound and then will lick his lips after it stops. I will be very curious to hear what the vet says. I always just thought it might be a hairball problem since it doesn't happen often.

Hope the vet gets the cookies this time. Hopefully, they will think the bag contains a urine specimen so they won't open it!

It sounds to me like he is trying to hack up a hairball. I'll bet you'll find it soon!
Could his collar be too tight? It looks pretty tight on the video, but that might just be the angle. Can you easily get your fingers between the collar and his neck?

Good luck with the vet. Let us know what his opinion is.

Ella & Rusty (who, when he is working on a hairball, sounds just like Leroy at the beginning of the video)

Leroy doesn't have hairballs. He doesn't even groom himself  I would think that if it was a hairball something would end up on the floor but nothing does.

His collar is on fine. I can easily slip two fingers under it.

Lol  I was tempted to put the cookies in a biohzard bag or put biohazard stickers on the paper bag but that might cause an entire building shut down

The vet said he got the cookies  I imagine he took them home to share with his kids.

Hi guys .. I have heard mocha make that noise a few times .. We also just assumed it was her trying to cough up a hairball .. but nothing ever comes of it .. we never find any around the house .. very interesting ...

sounds like a hairball to me and all my abys/and one civie get hairballs and he grooms whether you see him or not all cats groom some...but hope the vet has answers in the event its not a hairball issue

Leroy is a gorgeous kitty. I love his color. I was wondering if it's possible for you to take Leroy in for an exam.
But it's nice if the Vet can give his opinion with the video, too. Lots of luck and hope it's nothing serious.

I don`t want to scare you but I would have him x- rayed just to be safe. Have you noticed he has lost any weight? When did he start doing that and how often is he doing it?

Not all cats. In his 12 years Squishy never groomed himself at all, not even a lick at a paw. Leroy's the same, though he will occasionally lick aimlessly at his fur for a couple seconds before zooming off to play.

Emma has thrown up hairballs and it sounds different from what Leroy's doing, like regular vomiting and no lip smacking afterwards.

No weight loss. There isn't anything he could have gotten except for maybe a dust bunny under the bed or sofa. It started earlier this year and up until last month he had it a total of 3 or 4 times. This month he's had it 3 times and counting.

No response from Dr. B yet :? Thinking he might not have received my email. It happens every now and then for some reason. It's too late to call him now. He might still be there but I'll just get the ER and I don't want to tie up their line with a non-emergency call. I'll call tomorrow and resend the email.

Hi Squeem-

I watched the video. I think he's coughing (same noise as hacking up a hairball but the hairball never comes up) but I don't understand the lip smacking part of it going on that long. Merlin has asthma and he coughs sometimes. The coughing brings up mucus and then he swallows it. I seem to recall you've already looked in feline asthma, right? Did you look at the Fritz the Brave site? Leroy is doing something similar but the prolonged lipsmacking is confusing. I really hope your vet can figure this out and that it not a big deal. He is absolutely beautiful....one of the most gorgeous cats I've ever seen. Seriously!

Squishy Merlin had asthma so I know what that sounds like. Leroy's thing definitely does not sound like asthma. Does a hairball sound wet when it's trying to be horked up? When Emma does it, it doesn't sound wet at all. Just a couple gags and plop onto the floor. The swallowing does look like Leroy is trying to clear his throat of mucous or something. No idea about the lip smacking. He doesn't seem nauseous.

Butthead was a "noisy breather" and snored ever since he was a kitten. Vet never found anything obviously wrong with him, though admittedly we didn't do extensive testing. Later on he also started making noises similar to Leroy, licking his lips and swallowing and coughing, like he was trying to hork up an alien face-hugger incubating inside him. Nothing ever came up, but these episodes periodically occurred. A year ago when he had surgery the vet removed multiple bad teeth as well, and afterward the snoring and breathing noises decreased dramatically. Still occasionally tried to hork up that alien though. I'm sure if Leroy had teeth issues or nasal obstruction you would have noticed it by now, but I guess I'm just saying that sometimes cat do weird things and make funny noises but there isn't anything seriously wrong with them. Hopefully that is the case here.

this sounds really bizarre, but i wear a night guard to keep from breaking my teeth while i'm sleeping. when i put it in, if i get started swallowing, i almost can't stop. it will go on til i fall asleep despite me trying very hard to stop it.

i know i know - you're thinking i'm totally odd. i am. :-D i'm just thinking that perhaps the lip-licking may be like that. if i, a thinking person, can't stop swallowing once i get going, i can totally imagine that leroy might be caught in the licking cycle.

the initial thing does sound like hairball action to me. if he doesn't groom, why isn't he greasy like punkin? punkin looks like someone poured oil over him - he stopped grooming when he developed diabetes and hasn't ever restarted. i wonder if he's a secret groomer - like at night. hahaha like his beauty shop is only for vampire kitties. ;-)

have you tried giving him hairball medicine anyway? he's not diabetic, right? so you could give him laxatone without a problem. i wouldn't think it could hurt him, even if it's not hairballs. if it is, maybe it would send it on through him. i think i'd try that.

also, when it got to 1:46 Leroy looked right at the camera and i had a sudden thought "i glimpsed leroy's soul!" which got me all excited. he's a sweetie. even if he is a troublemaker! i always liked the bad boys.

Well, he is a boy. Maybe he's embarrassed about grooming in front of girls so he does it when no one is looking

Emma occasionally grooms Leroy's head and that always ends up in a wrestling match

Maybe raw food just helps keep the fur healthy and non-greasy?

Leroy's finicky about treats and stuff :? I'll try hairball stuff but no guarantee that Leroy will lick it up or even know what to do with it other than make a mess

Would extra fiber help? When Emma had ileus the vet said that commerical raw foods tend to be low in fiber.

He kind of has that Dr. Jekly/Mr. Hyde thing going on. Sometimes he's well behaved cat_pet_icon Other times, it's bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif @-) @-)

I wish I could help. I would try pepcid in the event it is acid being brought up. My dog has acid reflux and she licks her lips a lot and swallows a lot. Her cough is due to a severely enlarged heart, and congestive heart failure. I doubt this is a problem with Leroy. Have you tried pepcid to see if there is improvement? Its real easy to give and gentle.
