Back in August, Spitzer went to the emergency vet for 24 hours. He'd been vomiting overnight and I didn't notice until AFTER I'd given him insulin (Lantus). Oh cr*p! When he was 84 at about +2 and had pretty much emptied his stomach, I figured he was heading for a hypo from lack of calories to match the insulin.

At MedVet (Columbus, OH), they did an ultrasound and then a needle biopsy. No real conclusive diagnosis, just "diffuse hepatopathy". When I take him in for a dental, I'll ask for a more definitive biopsy, as I have a feeling it may be cancer. He has so little fat on him, it'd be really difficult to have hepatic lipidosis and the blood tests didn't show that, just some mild elevations.

The vet instructions said to start him at 0.8 units ... and of course the U-40 syringes provided only indicate whole units, plus they're harpoons. I'll send her the conversion chart and show her I can use the U-100 3/10 cc syringes I already have to dose him (basically, multiply units on U-100 syringe by 0.4, so a marking of 2 means 0.8 units)

I gave him Fancy Feast Kitten Turkey & Giblets, then mixed the rest into Sophisticat Turkey & Giblets. He's painfully thin and the extra calories should help buffer the ProZinc effects while I'm away today. I'll test before I leave.

Re: 10/19/2011 Spitzer

BJ,
I just read back through some of your previous links. I certainly hope the ProZinc works for Spitzer.
And welcome to our group.

Here's hoping Prozinc works for Spitzer and that .8 is a good dose.

Hi BJ! I just wanted to say welcome to our crazy group! I sure hate to hear Spitzer might be sick though but I hope the PZI works for him!

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone.
Numbers for today, so far

AMPS 7:15 391
7:30 0.8-ish PZ (after he ate a bit)
+2-ish 9:30 354
+11-ish 6:23 389
PMPS 7:51 350 0.8 PZ

I was gone for most of the day, driving a rescue transport. Drove through Zanesville, oH and saw a sign about the "exotic animals at large". What a disaster for those animals - some 50 of them and the majority were shot and killed as a danger to the public. Not enough trained people, less than an hour to dark, no tranq guns and trained operators. 18 Bengal tigers shot and killed.

That is such a sad story.

Pretty flat curve but lower pmps than amps. I would stick with the dose a few cycles to see if you get more movement?

Its within the 20% meter variance allowed by FDA.

I'd wonder if he were insulin resistant, except 0.5 units of N was able to drop him considerably.

I've beem following the exotic animal story, how sad it is.

Meter variance aside it is interesting that your PMPS was the lowest # of the day.
