Yesterday's condo

Iris has her long-awaited vet appointment today and I am a nervous wreck. I am still thinking that she has a polyp. I know that, at some point, they will just have to put her under to see what is going on and why she can't breathe normally... but I just feel sick about it, knowing what happened to her brother. :nailbiting:

Not sure if it is the stress of that or the crazy weather (it's 80 degrees here in Indiana) or the sleep deprivation, but I haven't been feeling well. After my volunteer shift (where yet another person called in sick and we had to run extremely short), I just crashed on the ouch. I still have a piercing headache and I barely made it out of bed.

Walter spent the night teasing the sharks. Thanks to large amounts of HC food, he never dropped below 50, but he also didn't want to come up much... right until now. His AMPS is probably a combo between a bounce and all the gravy he had. Mandarin also had several helpings of HC food - as did everyone else. I just didn't have the energy to feed everyone separately.

...and just look at Iris's sweet little face and her bright blue eyes. I just love this little girl.

Sending lots of vetty vines and prayers for little Iris and :bighug::bighug: for you. During the wee hours of the night, little sleep for you and not feeling good I would've done the same thing. Hope you feel better.
 
Add more vetty vines from us here in PA and I can imagine how nervous you are!

Sorry about Walter's midnight dive........bad timing when you don't feel well. Hope you can get some rest today and feel better soon. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
We are back home and the surgery is scheduled for Monday. :nailbiting: The good news is that Iris has gained over a pound since her last appointment 3 weeks ago. She is almost up to 5 pounds now. Still small for her age, but much better. She is also teething and that might be in part responsible for the smell that I noticed. The bad news is that she still sounds funny and has a hard time breathing. Rather than sedating her to look for a polyp, we decided to schedule her for a spay surgery. She is almost six months old and I would hate for her to go into heat.

So, on Monday, my vet will do her spay surgery and check for a polyp while she is under anesthesia and intubated. If the polyp is in her throat (or if it originates from her ears), she will remove it at that time. Unfortunately, nasal polyps are not always easily visible and there is still a chance that she would need a CAT scan. And there's of course also a chance that there is no polyp and that this is a different issue. Either way, she is healthy enough for surgery... and I just have to keep telling myself that she will be okay for the next 6 days. :eek:

Iris is also a total Mama's girl at the vet's. She was very comfortable nuzzling on my neck and steadfastly refused to even get on the scale. She eventually agreed that the vet could hold her like a baby while doing the exam, but the exam table is not to her liking.

It is going to be a long week....
 
Great news on her weight gain and being generally a healthy little girl. I think girls are more clingy then boys but that scale is super scary! Somehow I'm thinking Iris will become a permanent member of your residence ;) Will keep continuous vines and prayers flowing for her.

I'm glad she's healthy enough for surgery, even though I know it will be nerve-wracking. Paws crossed the vet finds out what's making it hard for Iris to breathe, and can fix it.
 
This is just one other thought about Iris that just popped into my head...my civvie Frankie had a very bad bout with herpes when she was 3 weeks old (before we adopted her), and it left her sinuses damaged so now she is always congested and snuffly. Maybe that happened with Iris, too, since she was so sick when she and her siblings were abandoned. It's just something that is part of who Frankie is...it's not perfect, but it is tolerable.

I always have one of the cat beds in the crate (I have big crates) and take the cat bed out of the crate when at the vet and let the kitty sit on that (rather than that cold hard exam table) and cuddle them with my arms wrapped around them until the vet comes in.

That was actually one of the other thoughts that the vet had. The one thing that is strange about her is that she has never had any sneezing or discharge and her eyes have always been perfectly clear. So it's not really a "typical" case of Herpes... if there is such a thing. But, then again, it's a cat that we're talking about, so there's probably more exceptions that cats that play by the rules. :rolleyes:

...and I spent the day hanging out with my furry family and grading some papers. Still not feeling the greatest, but I'm up and moving. The boys took the day off - two perfectly flat cats. Let's hope that doesn't mean that they have another surprise in store for me tonight.

Seriously, Christina, I am so happy to hear that news about her

Allergies are off the chart now - maybe you need an antihistamine?
