Hi Lori, just getting around to seeing that Ginger is in the ER. I am so glad that you were able to get her there. She will get the care that she needs. I am sending you a cyber hug and sending Ginger white lights and healing vines to help her though this ordeal.

Hi Lori, It is very good news that Ginger is in the hospital and getting the care she needs. You must be relieved that she is improving so rapidly. We are sending lots more healing vines, snowflakes, white light, and many positive thoughts to Ginger and you and DH tonight. Feel better soon, sweet Ginger!

Its not really all good news.

We went to visit her and I took in one of my worn shirts for her to sleep with.
She did not look good at all. She is still not moving, she never raised her head at all. Her eyes were open though.
I think she knew we were there. When I kissed her she made some "mommy I do not feel good noises". hmmp hmmp hmmp.

The night Shift ER doctor was on duty when we arrived.
He had some good things and not good things to say.

First he said he was very impressed with the spreadsheet I brought in of her BG levels for the last month.
He said I have been doing an excellent job in monitoring her BG levels.
He said it helps alot and he wished everyone else did that.

Good things he said:
She was not extremely dehydrated, just somewhat, probably my syringe water feeding every 2 hours helped with that.
Its very good that she has no Ketones present.
Her sodium levels are reducing at a very good and safe rate, so that is encouraging.
Her BG level went down to 170 which is where he wants it right now. He wont be giving more Humulin R unless it spikes back up.

NOT good things he said:
He thinks she has kidney failure but doesnt know how severe.
He also suspects that she might have Cushionings Disease, which might be the reason I could not get her BG Levels lower.
But also said, it could just be that her correct insulin dosage was not found in time.

He had me sign a paper with my decision on whether or not I wanted her resuscitated in the event her heart stops during the night. And also if I wanted her to be euthanized in the event it would be in her best interest if she was in chronic pain.
I chose not to resuscite and yes to euthanize if it would be in her best interest.

It appears she will need more tests for a diagnosis.

A specialist will be examining and evaulating her tomorrow morning.
I wont know more until then.

The questions they asked about lifesaving measures are standard. When Gabby was hospitalized, I had to sign the same kinds of papers. Hopefully, as the electrolytes stabilize and they have more tests results for the specialist to evaluate, you'll have a better picture of what's going on in the morning.

Lori...glad her BG is down and that you have some good news. Just wanted to let you know that kidney failure can be acute or chronic. I had a kitty with acute renal failure (due to a virus) when she was 10; we got her back into the normal range and she lived to be 21 and did not die of renal failure. If it's chronic, there is a great yahoogroup with lots of super info and smart people. I've seen some of the people on there whose cats had unbelievable numbers and they were able to get them down...not normal...but down...IV fluids in the hospital helps enormously. Ele is also in that group with me. Interestingly enough, someone just sent me this video on Cushing's Disease. I haven't watched it but thought I'd send it to you....I know you are busy now but perhaps you will have some time in the future. Again...I have no idea what's in it but it might help.

Ginger has not been on insulin very long. It's not unusual to not be regulated yet. Frustrating, certainly, but not that unusual. I hope you see marked improvement after a night of care there. It's good you took in something with your scent on it.

Thank you for updating us, Lori. I know nothing about Cushings disease, but kidney "failure" can be dealt with in many cases. Blackie has chronic renal disease (I think its a better term for chronic renal failure) and there are several kitties on the board that have it. I'm sending prayers and healing vines for Ginger. I hope she's much improved by morning. Sending peace and comfort to you Lori.

Glad you saw her Lori...but she is still not feeling so great so tomorrow will be better.....they will do the tests they need to do but she is in the best hands right now. The ER doctor sounds nice...I hope you feel okay now that she is there and being watched like that. This is way beyond home care, right? I hope you have a restful night and that tomorrow will bring good news for you....Sending healing vines to Ginger and hoping that she will rest well too. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Margarie.... thank you for the Cushings Disease video link, I watched the 1st two so far, They are very informative.
She has a couple of the symptoms but not all of them, especially the being hungry all the time symptom.
In the last couple of months, her appetite has been very low. She has been eating very little.
The video also said that elevated ALP (Alkaline phosphatase) values are signs of cushings or pre-cushings disease.
Her blood work 10 days ago showed she was in a normal good range in her ALP values.
The video's tell of the cheapest way to obtain a diagnosis, which is good to know.

Pat......yeah way beyond home care.

Nina........Ginger has been on insulin for almost 2 months. The doctor feels constant BG levels in the 400's and 500's caused damage to her kidneys. He said if the insulin put her down to the 200-300 range this might not have happened.

I just opened my email and found an email from one of the vets I go to sent on Saturday.
With all thats been going on, I did not have my email program open.

She had checked Gingers Spreadsheet and said her BG levels were too high and needed to be seen by her or my other vet.
I actually had called the office Saturday, but they were already closed.
 
You're welcome, Lori. I hope they give you some good info...I, personally, know nothing about Cushing's except it can be hard to regulate the BG to
normal numbers. I'm sure your very capable vets will know how to check for it but at least the videos gave you some questions to ask. I hope Ginger
has a restful night and is much better tomorrow.

My Jill (non-diabetic) was diagnosed with renal failure several years ago. They thought it was chronic but apparently not (even after x-rays and telling me that she only had one kidney working and it was at the most 25%). She bounced out of that so I'm thinking at the time it could have been acute.

Now, however, she does have chronic renal failure...and it was pretty severe about a month ago with an accompaning UTI. We pulled her out with antibiotics and sub-q fluids which we now do every night. She had become accustomed to it (and this is a VERY 'don't touch me' kind of kitty) and purrs through the whole thing (after the needle stick). They make her feel SO much better.

Kidney failure kitties can still have a good, quality life for longer than I had hoped. My Otto has it as well... *sigh*
