Thank you everyone for the support yesterday. WOW, giving those SQ fluids was so terrifying. :o Me the whole time --->> nailbite_smile LOL Caught her in the box this morning got a ketone urine strip read. The color was definitely the "trace" color. Hardly any pink to it at all. So right after the urine test, I got a meter read. It was 5.7. But I know you guys say the ketones show up in the blood first, so I expected the meter read to be higher than the urine read. She had 1/2 can FF LC for breakfast and is now snoozing on the cable box (her favorite spot)

I need advice for her shot time tonight. I will be leaving the house around 730 tonight and will be gone a few hours. Her shot time is 830..... what do I do??

Used .1 R at +9 - Didnt notice a lower number with this

Increased Lanutus from 4.25 to 4.5 at PMPS

Go ahead and give her 0.1u R, providing you can monitor.Get a +2 and +4.
Yes, ketones show up in the blood first, which makes that meter very handy.
How long will you be gone tonight?

Im going to say probably until midnight... the drive is long. (family thing)

at what +hour will you be giving her the 100ml squids today... or if you gave them already, what +hour did you give them?

I'm asking because the numbers may come down a little after giving squids. we've seen that happen with some cats. not all.

we need the answer to help you figure out what to do for shot time tonight.

Hi Violet,
Any update on BG for today? How about appetite and calorie consumption?

I gotta tell ya, I'm not at all keen on the idea of Garland being left alone for so long, being that her health is in such a precarious state.

I'm gonna be gone most of the rest of the day, possibly until midnight eastern.
I see Jill has visited and is aware of the situation.

I'm with Sandy. If it were me, I'd be graciously bowing out of my evening plans. I'd be too nervous having been through DKA with Gabby once. I wouldn't want a repeat.

I havent done the fluids yet. I was probably going to do it with in the next hour

Food- shes eaten 1.5 cans (4-5 oz) and Ive syringed an extra 2 oz

Ive canceled tonight, and am rescheduling it for either next Sat or the Sat after. But since shes sick this week, I wanted to be here tonight

I'm not sure whether Sandy is going to be around this evening. Are you OK with shooting 0.1u of R if she's not around to follow? I don't know if Libby is around, either.

I too, am glad that you are staying home tonight.

I think I could be there for you, tonight, if you want to give a little R tonight.
I also think that if you are going to be around to monitor, and are currently somewhere between +6 and +8, that you could give her 0.1 of R, right now.
Sienne, or anyone, if you don't agree, than please let me know.

Gave 100cc fluids at +7 --- shes leaking a little, is that normal?

Soooooo much easier this time. I hung the bag up super high and sat her on my lap this time. Last time I made the mistake of having my husband help, and all he did was make it harder LOL Not sure why, but I had more confidence being alone with her

I am not scared of giving her any R at all. Ill be here. Honestly, the R has never done anything with her numbers.. I wonder if when I attempt the .1 if shes even getting any at all... its such a hard number to dose

I'm also relieved you are staying home. HOpe the fluids go a little better today...pls be sure she has absorbed all previous fluids before you give the 100 mls.

I know it's an absolute pain but do you have any idea how much food she is getting in terms of calories instead of cans? Since the amount of calories differs by brand and flavor, it doesn't really translate to us how much
she is getting.

Ive looked for the calorie content, but shes eating FF classic chicken feast, classic beef feast and classic turkey & giblets feast. Its the orange box. The calorie lists ive seen has grilled or gourmet chicken...but I cant find just plain "classic". The gourmet ones have just under 100 calories per 3 oz

Totally fine. I plan on giving her R tonight. I need her numbers to get lower. They are still hovering at mid 200s. Ill be here all night

Much better this time. Thank goodness. :-D I think it will be even easier tomorrow. That first time yesterday was tragic though :lol:

What do you mean by leaking? I've never done fluids.
Glad you cancelled and will be with her. She doesn't want to go back to that hospital ;)

Fluids - yeah, sometimes some of it leaks. Try squeezing/pinching the skin a little bit when you remove the needle to help seal the hole. Glad it went better today. :smile:

Can you do me a favor and make sure you have recorded all of the R shots on your spreadsheet? It helps in analyzing the data. Also write on the spreadsheet what + hour you gave the fluids. In some cats, fluids can cause the numbers to drop so we're watching to see if Garland has that pattern.

Ive been recording the R on the spreadsheet. Ill add the fluids :)

PMPS 147 Decided to not do the R after all. Im sooo excited. This makes me feel a lot better. Hopefully she will continue to fight off those nasty ketones!!

I'm not all that familiar with the ketone readings, but I'm guessing from all the dancing kitties that this is good news. Yay - go Garland!!

Probably the fluids helped with both the ketones and bringing down the number. Since that's a pretty big drop, I would test again no later than +2 to be sure she is surfing and not dropping too far.

That's great!!

Now, I'm going to be a party pooper. Take a look at Tarragon's SS from early Sept. Her numbers were in the yellows, blues, and greens and Tarragon was diagnosed with DKA and pancreatitis. Numbers don't have to be high to produce ketones. And, ketones can develop quickly. The low ketone reading is great news and you should breathe a sigh of relief. You and Garland dodged a bullet -- so far. But, do not become complacent. Garland is prone to developing ketones and managing this will require diligence on your part. You are going to have to be on top of her dosing and not allow her to sit in pink or yellow numbers for long.

That's a pretty flat +2... you may be seeing some green tonight! Glad that the ketone crisis is averted... hugs from us!!!
