Good morning LL!

I will need to make this morning's hellos brief. Power went out at 8:30am and out vetty visit is at 10:00am. Should be interesting trying to figure out how to get my car out of the garage! Of all days!!!! Shasta's doing ok this morning. However, she woke me up at 2:45am as she regurgitated her PureBite Chicken treats. I thought she was doing so well w/ them as I had started adding water to them so that they would slide on down. Well, now they slide on back up. Ugh!

Ok, I'm going to get dressed and try to figure out the garage door! I'll report back later. Hopefully I'll have power then and won't have to use my really old iPhone that takes so long to type!!!! Happy Caturday!!!

haha...I ended up call my "adopted mom"/landlord/emergency contact to ask her about the garage door. She said to forget about it and she let me borrow her car!!!

Update on vetty visit:

New vet - very nice, calm, and easy to talk to. I couldn't get a vibe on him whether he was pro - FDMB or not. At one point, he mentioned that there were other types of insulin that we might want to consider. I am very happy/satisfied with Lantus, so I said that I would prefer to stick with it for now. He was very impressed that I was home testing; but was concerned about her numbers. Her last BG test before the vet was 66 (+4) and that concerned him. He let me borrow an Alphatrak 2 to test against my Relion micro... +4= 99 (Relion); 145 (Alphratrak 2).

He asked me about the aetenolol. I said I was still giving it to her, but only .80mL and she has not been showing any signs of saddle thrombosis since my old vet (retired) put her on it. New vet said I may think about backing off on the dose some (she's been on it since 2006) because sometimes, after time, medications can mask other medical problems. I will probably back off to .60mL tonight and keep her there for a while so that I can monitor her.

As she was hissing, she was wheezing (she's been doing that as of the past 3 months or so when she hisses). As soon as he pulled out his stethoscope to listen to her heart and lungs, the battle began. The hissing and growling! :evil: He and his vet tech went to scruff her/hold her...another bad idea. That set her off...bring on the claw swipes and teeth bared. :twisted: Next, they tried covering her with a towel and just put some gentle pressure to hold her down... World War 3 began!!!! :o I couldn't bare the girl getting bit, so I reached for the scruff. Shasta bit (not bad) and realized she had me, let go to hiss again and I secured my grip. They kitty taco'ed her with the blanket while I scruffed her and vet expressed the anal glands. He said they weren't bad, but he did get some from the right sac (the one I usually get stuff from). After he finished, they let go and after they were safe enough away, I let go and she skulked around on the table and his counter. She hunkered down right in front of his computer and kept her eyes on him the whole time. Honestly, I'm surprised you all didn't hear her out west and on the west coast!!!!!!! GIRL'S GOT A SET OF PIPES ON HER!!!!!!

Every time he would shift past her, she would remind him that she meant business and that she didn't like him too much! :roll: But over all, he said she was a normal kitty. Not happy about the doctor's office, but loves home and loves me. When he first saw her, he said..."She doesn't look 14!" After the anal sac expressing, his response..."She doesn't act 14!" My last question was in reference to what my female vet told me the last time I saw her... would he take us on as his clients? and if she ever needs over night/emergency treatment, would they be willing to treat her SNOTTY, NASTY ATTITUDE PROBLEM?! He said that he would absolutely be willing to take us as clients and yes, he would be able to handle her if ever the time presented itself that she needed overnight care. (for their sake, I will cross my fingers that she never needs that!) :lol:

All in all, I am pleased with this new vet and his demeanor, but I still do not know much about him in regards to his medical stance regarding diabetes, TRP, etc. I could not bare to make Shasta sit there much longer and will ask him at a future date.

Here's to no one dying today during Shasta's vet visit!!!! :RAHCAT

Oh, and as she was hissing at the new vet, he was able to check out her teeth...said they looked lovely! (and definitely strong...note small puncture wound on my hand!) :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Poor Shasta, :evil: who could help being snotty with all that repression. :smile:
What did he say about the clicking?

Sounds like his concern about the low numbers was just "vet school thinking" about regulation numbers being good enough to me.
They just don't think like we do.

Hope Shasta doesn't go up too much from the day.

SO....that's the sound that woke me up from my nap today! :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: It was that SNOTTY cat with the catitude :lol: :lol: . JK.

Sounds like a good report overall and I'm glad you liked the vet and he "accepted" you all. Too funny. Also funny about his worrying about her BG...he thought it was too low? Figures.

Hope you all recover quickly from all that trauma and the bite is not bad. Glad her teeth are so good. And maybe you will not have to do any home anal sac draining for a bit ....such a yucky job!

FYI - the difference between the two meters is expected. A human meter runs about 30 points lower than an Alpha Track.

Gotta love the attitude.

Hi Deborah, good luck with everything and glad you made it to the appt. It sounds like this Vet will work out for you. Shasta sounds like my GA kitty when I had to take him to the Vet, as I remember the towel thing which did not work. I thought I head a kitty screaming earlier! :lol: :lol: Sending some calming vines to Shasta. How is she doing now, glad to be home I bet!

Sorry to the kitty alarm, Marje! I'll ask her to keep her voice down next time!!!! Actually, at the end of it all, when I was checking out, I had my head down, sniffling because of stuffy sinuses and the receptionist asked if I was ok. I picked my head up and giggled as I told her it was just my sinuses. She said... well, after all that noise in there, I just didn't know!!!! :lol: :lol:

As for the BG number, the vet asked me what BG number were considered safe on FDMB. After I told him between 60-120 (ish), he asked me what Shasta's numbers were. Umm...where to begin...I told him about her curves and how she varies. I didn't tell him about her low, lows...didn't want to get a scolding.

He asked me about my meter and I told him it was a human meter. I do not have a back up meter right now and was planning on getting something soon. That's when he brought out the Alphatrak 2 and sent it home with me. Weird though, he didn't say anything about when to bring it back.

Rhiannon, he said the clicking could be coming from her hips or shoulders, but until/if she started to show signs of pain he didn't feel it was necessary to put her through x-rays, etc. He mentioned a joint supplement (adequan), but I wasn't quite ready to deal with more injections. If it gets worse, I will contact him again.

Oh my, one of my students posted that the Animal Planet channel was showing a marathon of "Too Cute!" today...and now I'm hooked!!! KITTIES!!!!!

Speaking of kittens, did I mention that the vet tried to talk me into taking home a kitten. He seems to think Shasta would enjoy the companionship and it would help mellow her out. Hmmm...she definitely enjoy the kitten...FOR DINNER! :shock: :YMSIGH: I wish I felt confident that she would play nice, but I don't think she would appreciate that at all. Oh well...only child...only owner! :smile:

Oh...and my bite wound...is a tiny puncture. She's done much worse just in play! :lol:

think I'd look at that bill or call back to make sure you aren't getting charged for that alpha trak. :evil:
Odd that you don't have a time limit.

Hi Deborah, it sounds to me like the AlphaTrak is yours to keep, nice Vet! I used the AlphaTrak for a long time and gave it up not that long ago. I still have the AlphaTrak 2 and every once in a while I'll do a comparison.

Your total bill was only $17.00????

Shasta, you are one fiesty old lady! Sounds like the vet would like to be educated about FD. And no alpha trak in that bill since they charge something like $150. And the strips are outrageous too. Take care of that puncture. That happened to a friend of ours and she ended up overnight in the hospital on IV ABs with cellucitis. For the joint issue, you could start with a powder, Cosequin. I hear you on enough injections. Happy Caturday!

He was rather shocked (I'd like to think he was impressed) with the fact that I home test. However, I doubt he gave it to me for keeps. I assume to borrow and spot check against my human meter. I'm perfectly happy with my little Relion, but it's nice to have another meter to check against...and nice to finally have a back-up!

As for the bill...I know...RIGHT?! I'd have to go back and check my old vet bills, but I've never walked out of the vet's with such a cheap bill! Well, except the time I returned the Hill's M/D and they credited my account! :-D

Ann - she has calmed down, but still suspicious every time I go to pick her up for a poke! (don't blame her!) And sorry for the kitty screams...she just really wanted to express her irritation at the situation! :lol:

Liz - I came home and cleaned my 1 tooth mark with hydrogen peroxide and slapped a band aide & neosporin on it. I don't suspect it to become infected or bad...my hand is usually a chew toy for Shasta...all those sassy fingers to nibble on!!!! :-D

Hydrogen peroxide is what our friend used too. :o Just be sure to keep it open and don't let it seal up. Paws crossed. We use iodine to disinfect a puncture.

I'll slop some iodine on it after my shower. Honestly, if I took a picture of it, you all would laugh. I've poked myself with a sewing needle and left a bigger hole! :lol: Still, I know it's due to the germs in her mouth, etc. Also, I figure that I have enough drugs in my system for my chronic hives (which may be going into remission!!!!) that no germs/bacteria/bad stuff could survive!!! :lol: :lol: But I'll still watch it and be careful!
