Pirate Fitzel's Condo Cove

My poor baby. The tests (so far) show Fitz has pancreatitis. No ketones or sugar in her urine but we've yet to get the culture results back. The vet wants to do an ultra sound. I know several furrs here have had this done. What would they be looking for? Tumors? Cancer? Enteritis? nailbite_smile

I'll be picking up some pain killer for Fitz and some appy enhancer. I know there have been posts about pancreatitis but I didn't really pay attention to them. Guess I need to now.

What should we expect from an ultra sound? Do you find out right away? The vet said the panceatitis is usually an underlying condition for something else. I'm really scared. My little Pirate is still hiding and not wanting to eat. I can only imagine what doing an ultra sound is going to do to her.

Hi Shai. Poor baby Fitz! So sorry to hear about it. BUT now you know and can handle it. I bumped the info
"Primer on Pancreatitis" by Marje to the top of this forum for you to read.
Prayers and best wishes !!!!

How did the vet diagnose pancreatitis? The best/most reliable and accurate method is either a spec fPL (the blood is sent out to either IDEXX or TAMU) or a Snap fPL which is done in the vet's office. The former gives you a numerical result and the latter is either a positive or negative result.

You might want to take a look at the information Marje put together on pancreatitis.

(((shai)))

I'm so sorry your little girl is sick. I hope the post I did will help. Be sure the correct blood test is done....if a vet tells you it is p'titis based on amylase or lipase levels, it's incorrect. You cannot use those values in cats.

I do think the U/S has value. Gracie's p'titis test came back as probable that she had it but the U/S indicated the pancreas was normal and the bile duct was infected which was probably causing the positive results for the p'titis. If I hadn't had the U/S, they would have treated her for the wrong condition. BUT..Gracie had no symptoms and Fitzel does.

My vet lets me stay with her during the U/S and so he was telling me as he was looking at everything so I knew on the spot what was going on.

Please let us know how we can help. Sending your girl healing vines.

The good thing is..maybe this is what was keeping her numbers wonky and once you address it, she will do better!

Thank you Chris and Marje for the panceatitis primer. I feel better knowing what they might be looking for. My mind went all sorts of places and since we've lost one of our babies not that long ago to cancer it's the first horrible image which came to mind.

I don't know if they'll let me be with Fitzel when they do the ultrasound. I don't think so. It's wonderful that you were able to be with your baby during the test. I think it's comforting for furr and Bean alike. Thank you so much for letting me know your experiences. It makes the unknown just a bit less scary.

@Sienne - the test they used was the fSpl (or something like that) Marje had it in her post on pancreatitis. They said it was the best test for that. They also ran a pancreatic profile or something like that to check her endocrine and exocrine levels. Those were okay. And her urinealysis came back with no glucose and no ketones.

@Anne and Liz - I got the strips today. THANK YOU. Now I will most definitely need them. She's clear of ketones now but I'll have to keep that monitored.

@Rhiannon - yeah. The Pirate will have her beautiful belly furr all shorn. but I know she'll be in good company.

@Jane - thank you for linking my previous condo in the condo I've yet to link here. No worries about the email. It will be welcome whenever you have time. Believe me I understand the complexities of life and how fast they fill days and nights. If your DH has the time and/or energy for a session - that too will be most appreciated whenever he can.

Sending much love to all for your support today. It's been a teary one and an anxious one. I crawled under our bookcase to hand fees the PirTe a bit of roasted chicken. She nibbled a piece but that was it. She hasn't come out all day except for LB use and when mean mommy tested her. I'll post her numbers tomorrow and update her SS then too. All exhausted here. I'm going to find Fitzel and give her a bit of lovings and then off to bed.

Sending lots of hugs, as Sienne has written here often "knowledge is power". We have paws crossed all is sorted out very soon! Must have been karmic to send those strips with such important timing! :YMHUG:
