Yellow to red to pink yesterday

Zener's morning started off as a typical morning. But shortly after MamaLizBean went to work, Zener came in and woke up the night duty bean. He wanted something to eat and to go out for yard patrol. And Z always gets what he wants! He came inside and went to a litter box right away and did a small pee, then he walked to another litter box in the house and tried to do the same but nothing, then a few minutes later to another one and a small amount of pee. He seemed to be straining and was generally restless and walking around, then resting briefly in unusual places. I called the vet right away and they had me bring him. Our vet of Captain Team Z is on today, so she will give him a good going over. We had to leave him for her to evaluate him if an appointment cancels, or if not, on her lunch break. A quick screen showed his bladder small and not painful so they do not suspect a blockage. Still waiting for the call from her.

It was miserable to leave him and then I felt a bit of relief to do so. And I felt terrible about that.

Night duty bean, that's me, is leaving at 4 pm for Berlin. So of course, something goes crazy with our guy. Will report when we know more.

Poor Z and his beans....not that there is ever good timinig for something like this, but I'm so sorry it happened right before Anne has to leave. I'm glad you were able to get him in right away....sending tons and tons of speedy recovery prayers, and safe travel prayers for Anne.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311 at vet

Ack! Z-man! I hope it's something simple. Sending gardens of good vetty vines your way!!

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311 at vet

Yo Z Man, you've got to be OK, man! Your Mamabeans need you to stay well this week!
I'll be over with a pot of chicken soup as soon as you get home.

Hey guys, I hope that this turns out to be just one of those inexplicable happenings and that Zener is fine. Keeping him in our prayers. Have a good flight, Anne, and a wonderful time in Berlin.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311 at vet

Sending tons of healing vines for Z man. I hope all is well and a very short course of a/bs will get him back to peeing like the big guy he is.

Don't feel bad. Sometimes it's a nice break to know someone else is responsible. Hugs to you all.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311 at vet

Oh no. I hope it's something simple and easy to treat. I hope you hear something before you have to leave Anne. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311 still at vet

Thanks all for your kind words.

Here is the latest from Captain Team Zener:
"We performed a urinalysis and it was normal - there were some granular casts that indicate kidney disease (which we already know!) but no indication of infection or crystals. No stones were seen the bladder wall looked normal."

She recommended bupe if he is in pain. We already are using a lot of the meds (and subQ fluids) to treat cystitis. Waiting for a phone call to chat about our guy, and hopefully very soon, the go ahead to pick him up. I would hate to miss saying bon voyage before I leave.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223 on way home from vet

Liz is on her way home with our guy. Ruled out blockage, UTI, stones and most other things, so likely a cystitis. Liz may know more when she gets home with our guy. I'll be leaving in about 30 minutes so hoping to get to give them both big hugs before I head to the airport.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223 on way home from vet

I'm glad he's heading home. Sending prayers that his bladder settles down quickly...poor little guy! Be safe in your travels, Anne!

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223 on way home from vet

I'm glad you are all home and the vet thinks there's nothing urgent. Mr. Z can't be too upset -- his numbers are coming down.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223 on way home from vet

Sending lots of good peeing vines and feel better vines for Zener! And I hope Anne has a good trip.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223 on way home from vet

Tons of vines out to the big guy. Theo gets periodic idiopathic cystitis and is sending lots of sympathy vines out. Neko is whipping up an extra large batch of cimmamum ice cream for both Zener and Tobey today.

Safe travels Anne.

Re: 10/1 Zener AMPS 355;+4.5 311;+9 223;PMPS 241 home from v

We are home now and Anne is on her way to Berlin. Crazy! Zener is acting fine now. He peed in the carrier on the way home, without any sign of distress or discomfort, at least none that I noticed while driving. Then he went outside and peed while sniffing the catnip. It was a good amount and he did not seem to be straining or uncomfortable in any way. So maybe the episode this morning was a plug and it got eliminated. Paws crossed. We have bupe and fluids, if those are needed. I gave him about 75 ml when we got home. Hopefully BGs won't crash tonight. Appy is good tonight and he's getting around ok. He seems pretty perky. I got a feliway diffuser at vet's, just to see if that will help with any stress that he may be feeling. Right now, he's napping on my lap. :-D :-D :-D

Thank for you all of the visits and encouragement. We couldn't do this without our LantusLand family, that's for sure! :-D :-D :-D

Great news on the larger pees! Thought I'd post some comments I made to you earlier via PM:
My Theo has idiopathic cystitis - ie. who knows what causes it. The blockage can also be caused by a mucus plug instead of a stone, although Theo sometimes tests positive for stones. The keys to managing cystitis are food (low carb, low phosphorus) with lots of water added to keep things flushed. You want their urine to be diluted so a low urine specific gravity is a good thing. I add Cosequin to Theo's food - there is some evidence that glucosamine helps firm up the bladder walls. The episodes can be caused by stress, so I have Feliway plug-ins in most of the areas that Theo hangs around. Theo's a skitty cat anyway, not sure what caused the last couple of episodes, the first was definitely stress.

For the short term, whenever Theo has an episode, vetty gives him Cerenia (acting as an anti inflammatory), bupe for pain - usually 3 days worth, and he has received cartrophen shots (Adequan is your equivalent) and sometimes fluids. The last time, we had a series of 4 cartrophen shots, one week apart - all part of trying to get the glucosamine to help his bladder wall. A couple of times he's had episodes on Sundays when his regular vet is closed (of course) and I've had other vets also prescribe Prazosin to help the urethral wall spasms. Knock on wood and (antijinx) it's been a while since we've had an episode. Neko's acupuncture vetty has said that Hyaflex can also help.

At one point I was giving Theo cranberry powder, but I heard from a bean who has idiopathic cystitis and she says cranberry can be painful. There are other types of cystitis for which cranberry does work.
And
And one other thing, since Theo's last episode, I've been giving him the Pet Naturals of Vermont UTI treats. They have d-mannose in them which is supposed to help. It also has cranberry but at least I'm not adding any extra. I'd cut them out if he was having an episode.

Hi all!

Safe travels to Anne.

Wow, quite the day there for Zener. I am glad that basically every thing is OK. I learned things in this condo today, about cystitis. I a gld Wendy poosted it ehre.

nice BG's for Zener too, not too bad considering all that went on there today. Be well Z-man!

Hi Liz.

We did the 18 hour thing with Cinco, and since we shot at midnight, I'm staying up to check on him for a while. Didn't you guys use that method on Zener once? I am going to check your spreadsheet - I want to see how to post it.

Sorry to hear about the scare Zener gave you. I'm glad your regular vet was able to work him in and relieve your minds. You know, Harvey did the same thing a while back, and there was no sign of infection or blockage. The vet determined it was gas in his intestine, which made him feel like he had to go. Once he got rid of the gas, the behavior stopped. Just a thought.

Sending lots of good vines to Z-man to be healthy, and safe travel vines to the globe trotting Morning BIC, Anne.
