Morning all,

Last week was full of stress at work, my stress caused juniors stress, no posts last week.

Good number this morning, ketones negative also.

My question is, he tested negative for glucose in his urine this am when I tested his ketones, which were negative, why, outdated test strips?

In fact, it may not be time for new strips. According to the Position Statement of the International Diabetes Federation:

The limitations and proper interpretation of urine glucose test results need to be understood. These include that urine testing gives the results since the last time urine was voided. If the urine is free of glucose, it is an indication that the blood glucose level is below the renal threshold, which can vary, but is usually accepted as corresponding to a blood glucose level of 10 mmol/l (180 mg/dl). Results also do not distinguish between moderately raised and grossly elevated blood glucose levels. A particular concern is that a negative test does not distinguish between normoglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. In pregnancy, urine testing is less reliable because the renal threshold for glucose can drop significantly.

In other words, a urine glucose test is not sensitive to low or high numbers. Pretty much anything below 180 gives a negative test. So, Junior could be at 150 or at 20 and a UG strip would read the same. A numbers could similarly be in the 300s or 600s and the reading would be the same. The other issue is that the reading is not to the minute the way it is with BG numbers. Rather, when you test urine, you are getting numbers which are hours old -- your cat has to eat/drink, metabolize the input, produce waste, and have enough waste that his bladder fills and he has to void. You have no idea if the reading now is what it was several hours ago. The UG reading is several hours old compared with BG.

What the UG test this morning told you is that Junior was below renal threshold -- but you would have known that anyway.
