Today's the day in a few short hours I will know if there is any vet that truly understands this disease or at least willing to work with me to learn. I have high hopes based on a couple phone interviews.

But omg I'm a nervous wreck. I just don't do change well especially where my babies are concerned. Just have to remember she isn't hurt or sick. So if this goes badly I can simply say "Thanks but no thanks, we'll be staying with our current vet or we'd like to use your service for everything but her diabetic care and we'll just have to agree to disagree on that."

Thanks Jill

I can definitely use them today. While I know that these trips are a necessary evil of sorts I hate them. Mostly because it upsets the furkid so bad, and because I haven't had real good experiences with the other vets in this backwards city. One has managed to kill two of my animals and badly traumatize two others, and then the current one while we have a very long personal friendship she's as stubborn as I am, and self admits she's old school and likes it that way. But she is also the same person that told me to give Autumn her antibiotics mixed with PANCAKE SYRUP to mask the taste...So NOT happening with a diabetic. As well as after fostering one of her other client's diabetic cat that had been under her care for several years and seeing the depressing clinical signs in that cat, and finally having to grab her by the ears to get her to even feel where I was feeling lumps that not only could I feel but could see. I'm just not happy risking her treatment methods with my kids. Love her to death and we've known each other since childhood. Hopefully if we make the change our friendship will endure and I would love to keep her because of the fact this is one of the most skill surgeons I know. When I was working there I saw her preform a c-section on a little girl's hamster. So for spays and neuters or patching up a feral/stray not a problem.
Autumn and my other sugars....Big Problems.

Absolutely the most incredible, has her act together vet I've met thus far and Autumn adores her. My cranky, don't touch me or I'll punch you girl most of the time at the vet's was calm and so serene while we were discussing her, curled up and took a nap on the vet tech's lap :o She was purry and giving kisses to to both the vet and to the tech. But of course it probably didn't hurt that they kept telling her how stunningly beautiful she was, which she knows.

It was also the most complete exam I ever had given to any of my animals since moving back to Nebraska, it was a nose to tail textbook SOPA. The vet was delighted that I had her on Friskies Pate, even though she wasn't familiar with Levemir she does prescribe Lantus so was familiar with the concept of a depot insulin and asked me to explain to her what the differences are in the two so she understood how to read Autumn's spreadsheet because as we talked she understood that the curves do look differently.

We have a NEW VET! And an incredible one at that! She listens, she discusses, she talks to me like I am her equal and her partner in the treatment of my animal. Even down to when discussing Autumn's need for pain management she gave me 3 options, the pros and cons of each and asked how I wanted to proceed. She handed me an estimate for her dental with no pressure to schedule it right then and there. And basically before I told her what I thought was the problem, said the only reason Autumn isn't off insulin is her mouth needs fixed up and we need to manage her arthritis aches and pains. I've opted to start her on Cosequin to see if she gets relief with that if not we may look into something that is actually a true pain med, but at this point I love the way she thinks, start with the easy fix, and work up if necessary. Go with the least amount of drugs and invasive treatments, look for the cause before just treating symptoms with the big guns.

If anyone in the Tri-cities of Nebraska needs an FD friendly vet...I got one for you!

Oh yeah...started to tell her about this board not only does she already know about us....she uses us!!!!

Mel
that is FANTASTIC. so happy for you and autumn that you found a great vet.

Wow! Great vet!!!

It is such a relief to have one who works with you and is up on this disease. I am lucky to have a holistic vet that is awesome.

I hope the Cosequin works for Autumn. It really helps Alska control his shaking legs but it takes a while to start working.
