10/05 Molly AMPS 236

I at times gave Max 1/2 tsp. Miralax and a tsp of pumpkin twice a day too. There are drugs like lactulose and cisapride I think is another. if need be. Does she drink water? Do you add some to her meals? That can help too.

I add water in with her food and top it with freeze dried treats . She has fresh water everyday but I never see her drink out of it. She seems to get constipated alot but I'm not consistent with her Miralax either.

Hello again!

While Cosmo’s condition is a little different than general constipation, we do call ourselves the poop inspectors at our home

I know it can be frustrating...hang in there!

is Molly straining and going in and out of the litter? It sounds like she was able to pass a stool on Sunday, was it a good BM? Has she gone since? How long has the recurring bouts of constipation been going on?

It also sounds like you have given Miralax and pumpkin, that’s a great start! Miralax does require extra water to be given, as Miralax (or restoralax) needs a certain amount of water to be given at a given dosage. That is because it draws water into the stool, so necessary to prevent dehydration, which can make things worse. If you read the package, it wants humans to mix it in water and chug it down. For 1/8 tsp Miralax, it wants 2 tsp water. For 1/4 tsp, that is 4 tsp water. It can take a couple days to work.

Diabetic cats already have a tendency towards dehydration, which can contribute towards constipation, because they are using their water to remove excess sugar by drinking and peeing in large volumes.

So...water, and keeping the stool soft are key. If your kitty hasn’t gone in a couple days, you may consider a vet visit to see if different treatments may be necessary. Cisapride, lactulose, enemas, sub q fluids are some of those treatments. Psyllium fiber can be a good addition to the diet and is safe for diabetics. We bought plain Metamucil capsules, opened them into a Tupperware and sprinkled a very small pinch onto Cosmo’s food at one point. Again, psyllium needs water like Miralax, but is a fiber supplement, rather than a medication. Though, pumpkin seems to work well on its own for many cats, but we never tried it.

Hope that helps some? :bighug:

Hello,
Molly has had trouble sometimes with pooping. To go into detail  she sometimes will have poop stuck on her, running around the house trying to get it out. But she hasn't done that in a while. I watch to see if she does poop. She will strain sometimes and I can tell she doesn't like to go use the bathroom, probably because of that reason. This morning she had a BM and it was a good one. She didn't strain and it was a good size poop lol. I think alot of the problem is I give her quite a bit of freeze dried treats sprinkled on top of her food with water. Then the Clearlax but she's in the habit now of having those treats. Although last night she really liked the pumpkin and didn't want the treats. I think I'll just try the pumpkin on her food. Cut out the Clearlax where the draws more water? I'm not adding enough water with the Clearlax and that's probably making her worse?

Glad she had a good BM!!!!! Yay poop!

Glad the pumpkin was a hit! It’s a good fiber alternative and kitties seem to love it! :)

My pleasure to help, if I can :)

Not sure where in BC you are, but looks like it’s going to be gorgeous in the lower mainland today!
