Hello again!
While Cosmo’s condition is a little different than general constipation, we do call ourselves the poop inspectors at our home
I know it can be frustrating...hang in there!
is Molly straining and going in and out of the litter? It sounds like she was able to pass a stool on Sunday, was it a good BM? Has she gone since? How long has the recurring bouts of constipation been going on?
It also sounds like you have given Miralax and pumpkin, that’s a great start! Miralax does require extra water to be given, as Miralax (or restoralax) needs a certain amount of water to be given at a given dosage. That is because it draws water into the stool, so necessary to prevent dehydration, which can make things worse. If you read the package, it wants humans to mix it in water and chug it down. For 1/8 tsp Miralax, it wants 2 tsp water. For 1/4 tsp, that is 4 tsp water. It can take a couple days to work.
Diabetic cats already have a tendency towards dehydration, which can contribute towards constipation, because they are using their water to remove excess sugar by drinking and peeing in large volumes.
So...water, and keeping the stool soft are key. If your kitty hasn’t gone in a couple days, you may consider a vet visit to see if different treatments may be necessary. Cisapride, lactulose, enemas, sub q fluids are some of those treatments. Psyllium fiber can be a good addition to the diet and is safe for diabetics. We bought plain Metamucil capsules, opened them into a Tupperware and sprinkled a very small pinch onto Cosmo’s food at one point. Again, psyllium needs water like Miralax, but is a fiber supplement, rather than a medication. Though, pumpkin seems to work well on its own for many cats, but we never tried it.
Hope that helps some?
