Today is the first day I have felt disquiet over Ty.

The diarrhea is basically back , if it ever really went away. Obviously the only thing that stemmed the tide was the peptosyl. The fecal test results are not yet back. Sent by courier Tuesday. May be back this afternoon ( Thursday) or tomorrow.

This morning Ty's appetite is down . This is not a norm at all. I got him to eat a small meal which is good for the insulin injection. He has now taken himself off to a quiet place which is also not a norm.

He is still on the poached chicken which is now not ideal as it does not contain all that he needs. Still giving the pumpkin & the SEB. Restarted the boulardii.

I know people throw up the hands in horror at the peptosyl but the only thing suggested from the phone call this morning was to start giving this again at a reduced amount for 3 days only.

Ty's thyroid function is normal.

An important thing to note is that if a cat has low vitamin B12 levels, has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or has hyperthyroidism.

Has Ty ever had a GI panel to check his cobalamin (B12), folate, and TLI levels? If he potentially has IBD and since he is elderly, his B12 levels might be too low. If so, he needs vit B12 shots (cyanocobalamin); the methylB12 you are giving him won’t help.

I believe I sent you the information for Emergency Stop with the S. boulardi....let me know if I didn’t....but it won’t help if his B12 is low. If you know his B12 is normal, then I’d try the emergency stop with the S. boulardi.

M, I’m so sorry Ty is not wanting to eat and continuing to have GI distress. I’m assuming your vet knows peptosyl is toxic in cats? Did the vet discuss this concern with you? I did find some info that it is occasionally used in cats and suggested a safer dose for cats, is the vet suggesting something in this range? If it’s the only help you have available and you think it helped, it doesn’t seem like you have too many other options. Here’s a screenshot of what I found, it was in a book, I can reference the title and all if you’d like. Most other references I found only said for use in horses and dogs, not for use in cats.

Many hugs for you and all the healing and appy vines I can muster for dear Ty! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes. I appreciate that. I had a read up when it was first prescribed.
I'd say the vet knew hence why the restriction on dose and amount. It was given as a holding measure . The dose and for how many days, restricted.
All the vets at the clinic are fully qualified & upskilled per NZ

1ml once a day. 3 days max.

Not sure people understand how it is here. I don't get to be put through to a vet. A vet nurse on reception goes away to have a quick conversation and comes back to the phone .
Calls from a vet re results, concerns etc will be mostly at the end of the day.

Given nothing else is working at the moment there is little by way of choice. Let the diarrhea be rampant. Try to contain it.

I figured they would know, it's just uncommon to use here for cats and I found that bit in an article so just wanted to pass it along.

Can't speak for others, but it's the same here for me, I don't call and get to talk to the vet, I get to speak to a tech and I might get a call from the vet at the end of the day or the next day as well.

I really hope it helps him, keep us posted. Come on Ty, you can do it! :bighug:

Bit like the metacam thing then. A big no-no in other parts of the world. Acceptable here still . I was actually relieved the garbarpentin was offered instead of the metacam.

Is a tech a nurse?

I guess it would be like a nurse? They can do things like blood draws and give fluids and that, I just don't know if a nurse is a certain qualification over a vet tech in the animal world. In the human world we have different levels of nurses here and even nurse practicioners which are almost like doctors with a few more restrictions.

Ah! I think a tech would be more than a nurse then. Don't think they have any techs in that case.

Well phooey. Even if I wanted to get Ty to the vet clinic , the roads are out due to the storms.

Think of us tomorrow. I am hoping to get Ty to the vet as things are not so good really overall.
Much depends on the storms.
Thinking of you always.
