Pretty flat kitty over here- back to work tomorrow night for 4 days- then likely a curve and an microincrease.

I am supposed to be going out of town towards the end of the month 1/29- 2/1 ...I thought about cancelling, but left bad about dangling a trip to Disney in front of my oldest friend and then saying- nevermind. I did get my friend to agree to shorten the trip instead. I have seen that most folks on here take reduced doses while on vacation...We don't really have much room for more reductions. I was wondering if I should plan on having a sitter not do ANY injections and just come by and check him- or if someone should give a drop of insulin just so we aren't messing up by going OTJ too soon ? I guess the numbers that weekend before might tell me more where we are headed but , I wanted to have an idea of a plan before the trip sneaks up on us.
Makoto is not the best behaved cat with strangers...he growls and hides under the bed if he doesn't know/like someone. I plan on having the two people I am looking at come by and visit with him a few days next week and start doing night checks/ give food while I am at work on overnights. I am not even sure he's going to let them do a BG check honestly...

I think once you get closer to the date of your trip, you'll know what dose would potentially work for Makoto. I wouldn't want to give NO insulin. Even once a day is better than no insulin.

As for BG tests, I decided for Ming that I would put a FreeStyle Libre on him if I ever had to be away so all the pet sitter has to do is scan his back. Of course, I'm pretty confident Ming will keep his on but I know some cats are real good at kicking them off. It's also pricier and it would depend of your vet is willing to put it on (or you could put it on yourself if you get your hands on some tissue glue - I don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing lol).

Otherwise, I'd take this half month to get the petsitter(s) familiar with Makoto and vice versa and see how they do testing Makoto and giving insulin with you still there.

I did think about that... I am thinking his insurance might even pick up part of the bill. We got a sweater to keep it on him, but he is mildly dramatic about wearing it...which may or may not help it stay on longer. He's just been so wonky with his overnight values even on this tiny dose lately that I was worried a bit. I guess we will see how it goes with her coming over now and watching me give the insulin, testing when I am here.
Thanks

I hope it goes well! I'm glad you still have half a month to get Makoto used to all the new things about to happen. :D I'm curious how it goes today with the petsitter. Please keep us updated!

Ari,
Hi to you and your very handsome prince! The end of January could look quite different than today but I sure understand wanting to be prepared. I've taken care of a few diabetic cats as a pet sitter. Only one person ever asked me to check BG, and I had no problem with it. Also, I only gave the morning injection in all but one case. At two different homes, I could not catch the cats! I literally spent two hours trying a couple times, because I know how important insulin is! The people knew their cats didn't like strangers, and told me just to try!! I really wish they had done as you are thinking -- let the sitter have time with your boy before they come to inject or test!!
All paws crossed for a good sitter Makoto likes!

LOOOL! Omg that's the funniest thing I heard all year hAhhHA!!! Did he at least eat the treat???

nope...not interested in the treat or socializing

I still work as a pet sitter/ behaviorist so I get how important it is to pair with a client first and not just offer changes and expect them to like it - especially cats. Fingers crossed it goes okay over the next few weeks :) He really is a brat , not even going to try and lie.
