Morning ~O) ~O) I increased Maggie to three drops, if I did it correctly. Each time I practiced with the size and amount of drops I had a different number, so fingers and paws crossed. The food challenge continues today. Yesterday I started Maggie on some Friskies Special Diet T & G which she likes, but with five carbs, now I remember why I discontinued as it spiked her bg! Soooo...maybe a trial on some Merrick bg turkey. I got excited when I found some Merrick bg chicken in the pantry, but then saw on Tanya's list that it has 1.73% phosphorus, yikes! I wonder about Wellness chicken, as I have more than a few cans! This is making it easier for me to clean out Maggie's food pantry, but on the other hand :-| with what to feed! I just received two cases of NV Instinct Chicken at my door Saturday from Mr. Chewey's. I plan on giving it to one of the shelters. I had free shipping, and it would be too expensive to return.
Ann & Tess, thanks for mentioning the NV raw sold at Petco. I've asked at Petco about it before but never actually tried it. I'm going to check it out today. I wonder how expensive and if it comes separated into portions! It sure would be easier than making my own. On the bright side here, I had some zoom zooms from Maggie this morning, which were absent for a few days. Have a nice Monday.

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226

I'm glad Maggie is feeling zoomy, even if a bit high this morning. Good luck on finding the right food.

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226 ATrak

I use NV raw, it comes in the perfect portion size medallions.
Good luck with the dose, those drops are so hard to calculate!
Hope you and Maggie have a zoom zoom wonderful day!

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215 ATrak

+3 215
I think the Friskies is keeping her from dropping.

Hi Linda & Weezer, I was so glad to see her entertaining zoomies, as it meant she did her #2 business!

Hi Iorwen, it's great to hear that you use them for Tray and that they come in medallions. Yes, I sure wish I could do half a unit versus counting the drops.

Hoping she will go down for you today...Feeding these babies, always the hardest part!
ope you find the magical food--have a great day--Hugs & love from us!

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215 ATrak

Awww Ann i'm sorry to hear that Maggie's fave isn't on the "good" phosphorus list. Will you be able to feed it once you get the binder? I wish you the best of luck trying to find a food that's good for her to eat. I hope she comes down for you today.

Have a great day Ann and Mags.

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215 ATrak

Good luck with the fuds, and the dose increase. I so hear you on the drop measuring thing - it surely would be my downfall. I hope too that you find the right food for Maggie, and one that she will like. Such a challenge for our furkids. Mannie says he will teak to Maggie today about just eating it, no matter what it is - he is such a master at that. Hope Maggie comes down for you today. It's not a bad start, just not a Maggie start. Go Maggie! The blues are waiting for you.

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215 ATrak

Good morning! Boy Maggie is food sensitive huh? She loves her turkey though. Hope you find the magic food that doesn't spike her BG, is low in phos, and she loves.

Have a great day Ann!

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215 ATrak

Hi Ann & Maggie,
I hate food dilemmas! Have you tried using chopped, hard-boiled egg whites as a phos. binder? Elizabeth M. Hodgkins, D.V.M. highly recommend this in her book, "Your Cat" (New York, 2007). She writes (p. 217):
Egg white is high in top-quality protein but contains no phosphate, so it effectively 'dilutes' the phosphorus in the food. This strategy allows the cat to have the protein building blocks of repair and energy production available in abundance, while reducing the intake of a nutrient that may be harmful to the patient. This is truly the best of both worlds.

This might work if Maggie will eat egg whites mixed in with her wet food. I tried it with Stu, but he didn't like the chopped egg whites. But I think if we had had more time, he would have come to accept them.

Good luck in your food search! Rusty says that Maggie was having a great time at the full moon party and that she is a terrific ice skater, even though she lives in California!

  Maggie told me she fell on her rump more than once!

Thanks Ella on using egg whites as a binder, another excellent help with info. I can give that a try until my I receive my phosphorus binders and see how Maggie takes to it. I actually have her book which is excellent.
Thanks very much,

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215; +5 238 ATrak

+5 238

Thanks everyone for the visits and the encouragement on the fuds issues. It looks like no more Friskies SD T&G for Mags if that's the culprit. I'm on my way out in an hour to meet a friend for breakfast and then will head up to Petco to check out the raw NV Instinct food and also pick up some Merrick bg turkey.
Amy, not sure if I can use the NV Instinct chicken with the binders. I know the important thing is to get them to eat but .....

Hi guys .. I'm sorry you are struggling with fuds .. I hope that the food at the pet store will work for maggie .. Enjoy your breakfast out .. have a great day!

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215; +5 238 ATrak

Thanks Devon for stopping by today. Yes, we have to get Mags on a lower phosphorus fuds diet, no more turkey & giblets. We'll work it out soon. Hugs and give your Mocha some scritches from us.

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215; +5 238 ATrak

I don't remember the exact number, but I know Wellness Chicken is over 1% phosphorus. What a pain, trying to find foods that they like that have the right number of carbs and right level of other "stuff", too! Good luck with the continued search. Funny coincidence that you posted this stuff the same day I asked a phophorus question in Trix's condo!

Have a great one!

Amy

Re: 1/9 Maggie AMPS 226; +3 215; +5 238; +10 158 ATrak

+10 158

This is strange; it can't be a late Nadir, can it? I stopped the Friskies Special Diet turkey & giblets as I remember previously it did spike her bg. I went back to NV Instinct Chicken as that is all I had with close to phosphorus levels. All the other foods in her pantry were too high in phosphorus. So I don't know if going back to the Istinct could take effect that fast with her bg! Or the three drops, too!
Amy that was a coincidence with the phosphorus. You're right as the Wellness chicken is over 1% but not that much. I did stop by Petco and got a free trial size of the NV Instinct raw beef, also picked up some Merrick bg turkey.

Hi Ann and Mags:

It's so hard when you have it figured out on fuds and then have to refigure it out. Good luck with the dosecrease. I give Gus Wellness Chicken with his binder because he likes it and it isn't too much over 1%...close as Amy said.

Hope you enjoyed your breffis!! Have a great day.

If you are going to feed egg whites, make sure they are cooked. They are a good source of protein to add in if your cat likes them, and is also getting a complete diet. Just make sure that you make all of these diet changes very gradually. If trying a series of different foods quickly, you may see some diarrhea. It is also important not to cause any food aversion. All changes to a kitty's diet should be done very gradually. Even if she still gets some of her old favourite food mixed in with a bit of a new, lower phosphorus food, you are moving in the right direction. If you do donate the foods, keep a bit on hand for any days when she might be feeling off and not eating well. It is always good to have a favourite food on hand.

Thanks Linda on the egg whites. I did have a change of heart on the Instinct chicken and have kept it. Yes, I'm finding out that I do need to integrate slowly. I was starting yesterday to introduce the Friskies Special diet to her but remembered in the past it did cause a spike with the five carbs. The Friskies will be good to keep on hand when I need to bump her up! So she's been back today on Instinct, and tomorrow I will mix in some Merrick bg turkey, I bought a small trial size of the Nature's Variety raw beef frozen medallions; they were out of chicken. I'm not quite ready for the raw yet, but it's in the freezer. :-D I'm not sure why I'm leary of it. Most of the ones I donated today were ones she didn't like, Merrick Chicken, some FF. Maggie will be a Happy Camper with some of the Instinct mixed in with the new. Thanks very much Linda.

  Celi, on the pic, too funny. The kitty actually looks like Maggie.

Hi Marje, thanks on the dosecrease. The extra drop is making a difference, down to blue and finally off the yellow floor.

I didn't know Petco had raw foods! There is a new one here, I'll check. I tried all the other pet stores , but that was before the new Petco opened. I'll check tomorrow! It would be nice to have another alternative food.

I make Tess's raw food and do use egg whites as a protein source. I don't boil them, I cook them in butter. (She loves the added flavor.) She didn't care for the chunks so now I toss them in the blender w/ the supplements and liver (also cooked) and it comes out like a sauce. She always laps that up first.
