Yesterday. Caber Yr 2. Day 96

Status quo here. Cold in the 20s. Today at +4 is PJ wellness visit (if I can catch her). Will have this Dr check her foot. She is doing well with it though.

Stay warm everyone.

Nice start for Ollie. I hope PJs vetty visit goes well and she gets a good report on her foot. Sending prayers.

Looking good Olive, be safe surfing today! Maybe you could help your Mama by coaxing PJ into your carrier? ;)
Have a good day Paula, vetty vines to PJ!

Wrangled PJ in the carrier, took 3 trys. She had a good visit. Dr was surprised how strong her muscle on the 1/2 leg is and it still has its tendon. Her front left he checked over and said she has good range of motion, didn't react with any pain.

My new kitchen sink cracked or has very deep gouge. Replacement is being sent. I don't know how they can put new one in without removing counter.

That's great!! Good for PJ!! :bighug:

I forgot to mention something about PJs visit. More of a rant probably.

I asked Dr when my next kitty was due in. We've been off schedule this past year. So he says Olive hasn't been in lately. I reminded him it's because she sees another so we could get cabergoline.

He says it doesn't work. I replied it does help, Ollie's symptoms are mostly gone, her insulin dose is half what it was, she is comfortable, even plays occasionally, she is maintaining weight. Labs are for most part normal. HCM has not progressed. Her walk is confident and sure now.

So here is my rant. I'm so tired of hearing how caber doesn't work. I get they need the studies. Yet IMO, they were not long enough. Change in dose was not tried in any of the ones I read. Some parents pulled theirs out of study after a few month, some did develop other issues and removed. Yet don't they need to know how caber works with other issues?

Penicillin was unknown, polio vaccine unknown, cardiac stents and bypasses were unknown. All until someone did it anyway. And yes those early ones didn't make it but paved the way for what are now very common treatments. I just don't get it.

I jokingly mentioned to Ollie's Dr when we started the caber, maybe she could write a paper or do a case study. Yes, we don't know the outcome, but so many doctors in the U.S. don't even know about it and automatically say no without even thinking about it. I just don't get how some can be be so closed minded.

Rant over.

And about 98 years ago, insulin was first administered (thank you Canadians), eventually saving millions of lives including mine. I've been taking it for 40 years. The insulin story is impressive. Back in 1979, I took bovine and porcine insulin. And then a few decades later, I got to share my Lantus with my cat!

I am so glad you fight for Ollie and share your knowledge, Paula -- teach a doctor something any time you can:)

I am so with you on the rant. Just because it didn't lower IGF-1 it's a failure? Umm, don't they know a reduction in excess growth hormone is a good thing. Won't talk about the fact that we've had three acros go OTJ, and between them and the rest, over half have seen dose reductions (due to lower GH). Given the options (none cost effective) it's better than no treatment. A win in my books. Plus the South American study had better results.

Good to hear PJ is better. :)

Reading @Stressedcatmom's thread and yours has helped me understand why my vet didn't know about cabergoline. There was a cat at work that my vet suspected had acro and I mentioned you and caber. She had no idea what it was. I was stumped, thinking I was crazy that she wouldn't know anything about it!

I really hope in the future we see FDMB on the map of vet med research regarding diabetes and acromegaly. There is so much REAL and precious data here that it's a shame it's not considered valid all because none of it was done under conditioned lab environments (I can't think of the right phrase for this). It has GOT to count for something one day.

A member here was the first person to use Levemir with his cat. Just sayin....
And Tresiba?

My primary doctor has left his practice to go into a research field specifying in implantable chips that will monitor anything they program it to and monitored with a phone app; BG, heart enzymes, liver/kidney levels, cholesterol, etc. The possibilities are endless. The head guy wanted my doc because he had been in general practice for 30+ years and his knowledge was that of someone "in the dirt" with actual patients and could help with suggestions on the product for possible expansive uses.

I begged my doc not to forget the furry friends and the applications it could bring to the veterinary field.

I am so sad to lose him though. He was my primary doc since I moved to Houston in '93.

@Olive & Paula glad your kitties are doing so well. Amazing progress with Olive :bighug:
