Sid was very perky this morning. He was 339 despite not having insulin yesterday, but I did give him .5 this morning. This is a dosecrease due to the 25 level yesterday am.

How much do the fluids typically bring a cat down? From last night to this morning, he went from Hi to 339 with no insulin. He was eating last night too because I wanted to make sure he got some food in to hopefully avoid ketones. So a drop of almost 300 points? Can that be due just to the fluids. That is pretty big.

At one point last night he actually got on the bed and laid down (which he almost never does) and I knew if I got in bed it would disturb him so I slept on the couch  When I went in to check him this morning, he was still on the bed but in a different spot.

Thank you very much to Rocket's mom for giving me the advice about the binder. He got some with a meal yesterday and in a meal this morning. I will also give him some laxative this morning. Is miralax ok for a diabetic? I have another brand that I have to check the ingredients on to make sure there is no sugar derivatives.

Re: 1/ 8 Sid AMPS 339- question on dropping due to sub Q flu

Miralax is fine. Many people here give a "maintenance" dose of it on a routine basis. Making sure Sid's hydration with Miralax is important since it draw water from other areas of the body to the colon.

While fluids can lower BG, it's an ECID thing when it comes to how much. A drop of 300 points is unlikely, I would think. You may want to consider giving fluids after nadir in case of fluids having a similarly big effect on Sid.

Also, could you please put your link to Sid's previous condo between the brackets. If you don't, the link doesn't work.

Re: 1/ 8 Sid AMPS 339- question on dropping due to sub Q flu

Thank you, Sienne. I fixed the link.

I will look for some Miralax if the kind I currently have has sugar derivatives. His hydration is pretty good (I think) as he drinks a lot of water. Sid's nadir is at 2-3 am and my only hesitation with that time is 1) if I oversleep and miss it or 2) being groggy and trying to give fluids.

So what I might do, is give him fluids before PMPS. I give the fluids in the scruff and the insulin along his side between shoulders and tail so there shouldn't be a conflict, right? I'd give it in the stomach but he would never allow that.

My Shadoe has dropped BG with fluids but Oliver has not. If you are concerned about dropping, why don't you split the fluids?
You don't need to get all the fluids at one time, actually it's easier on the cat if you split it.

Imagine drinking a quart of water all at one time; you'd feel like crap. Now, imagine have to drink that quart of water in about 5hrs.... easier to do, yes?

For the miralax, I give to Oliver in his 2 main meals of the day, just a 1/2 tsp twice a day, and lots of souped foods. He has 'slow stool' so I just help it to keep moving along.

How much subq's are you giving?

If it is a large amount (over 100), splitting it like Gayle suggested is a good idea.

ECID, so it might require a bit of playing around with timing. If you mark the time you give fluids on your ss it may help you understand what kind of drops Sid is getting from the fluids, if any.

Re: 1/ 8 Sid AMPS 339- question on dropping due to sub Q flu

Right now Sid is only getting about 50 mls/day. Marking it on the SS is a good idea too.

When I gave squids to Homie (GA) as a last ditch effort...
they neglected to tell me how much...
and i gave him almost the entire bag. Poor little baby...
it was awful.

So glad that this site is here...
and sending more vines Sid's way!

50 should not do much to the BG's. But of course ECID. I reduced from 100-125 to about 50-75 twice daily to diminish the possibility of drops from fluids.
