Atlas has been out of regulation since his illness. While he does seem improved he is sleeping most of his days and nights away and continues to lose weight. The doctor finally determined after extensive bloodwork, more X-rays, and several more visits that it was a severe URI with complications and diagnosed Attie with Rhinotracheittis. Basically feline herpes outbreak.
So I have been wondering if there could be a relationship between feline herpes and the pancreas that might explain his post illness glucose levels.
With a little effort I did locate one and only one vet opinion indicating feline herpes as a causative agent in pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas.
Exocrine Pancreatic Diseases in Cats pg. 3
Unfortunately the cats that developed it in this manner the outcome was fatal. So no real correlation exists, but the matter is highly suspect in my mind as to be a culprit in Attie's very slow recovery and distinct lack of regulation. The kittens discussed presented with upper respiratory infections, not the typical gastrointestinal. The virus was found intranuclear in one kitten.
I will be increasing his dose this evening, based on todays mini-curve results from today.
I have feline digestive enzymes to be added to his food starting this evening. If his pancreas is indeed compromised he needs assistance with his digestion. These are not probiotics, but digestive enzymes. They have been on-hand for a while and don't have any experation dates on them and in cold storage. When funds become available we'll order fresh.
If Attie's health condition is as I suspect, there is little to do other than palliative care. The virus getting into the pancreas is not good. I would think an ultrasound would reveal if there is indeed damage. I am proceeding forward with the assumption there is and while an ultrasound would explain his current condition...there is no treatment to stop it. It is viral and it is up to Attie's immune system. The best I can do is provide the needed nutrition and insulin. He is getting 500mg. of Lysine a day as well.
Some days you really shouldn't go looking for too many answers.
