Ok so I Have to rant and get others opinions and see if I am out of line.
I told the vet yesterday on the confirmation phone call for Moo's follow up visit tonight that I would not be doing the blood glucose test that they want me to do there at the appt. The apt was included in the dental cost for the recheck and the blood glucose check would be extra. I told them I could not afford it and I'd bring my own meter/supplies and my spreadsheet to show them the past week.
The girl on the phone yesterday said that would be fine.
Everything went great at the checkup. I used my meter, showed them my numbers, etc.
Moo is doing well, looks good, shes very happy with his progress.
I went to leave, they said no charge... I left.
In my car I get a knock on the window, its the receptionist saying I owe for the BG test. I said no, i didnt have it, I brought my own. So she said ok and left.
30 mins later I get a phone call saying I still needed to pay for it. I explained to them I brought my own, and confirmed yesterday that I would not be doing it otherwise I would have cancelled the appt.
They said either way I have to pay for it because the doctor still had to "interpret" his numbers.
I said what does that mean? I can do that myself, hence the spreadhseet. The receptionist asked how I would nkow about an increase, etc and I said I know plenty about it and belong to a group.
She of course went off about the group and not being a doctor etc.
I said I am not paying $35 for the doctor to "look at" my spreadsheet. It's rediculous.
I told them to cancel my appt for next week at his 2 week follow up and that they could send me a bill and when I can I will pay it.
Now, I do have the funds to pay it, however, that's not the point. Why pay for that when I do it myself? To have her READ it?
I told them I was very upset that after spending over $1000 there, they were going to charge me for the vets "Time" to look at his numbers. And the fact that I am a former employee at the vets office....

Do you think I over reacted?
Do you think they were out of line?
I'm just so frustrated with this!
More so with the fact that I confirmed yesterday on the phone call I did not want it and they didnt even do anything today, nor mention that I would be charged for her to look at my spreadsheet!

Ugh ok rant over.
thanks.

I would not pay for the BG. I send Max's ss to my vet and he calls me to discuss it if he feels it is necessary and not once has he charged me. When Max first got diabetes I was going there twice a week as I was chicken to test him. I was charged for the test but not for an office visit and my vet checked him and tested him each time. I would tell the office manager that you told the receptionist you would test yourself to avoid a charge and was told that was okay. That's my two cents anyways.

Yeah, I did tel her that! I even named the receptionist that told me it was ok! The office manager is a B and for some reason resents me when I should resent them for how they let me go when I lost my job there (a vet tech they had wasnt cutting it, so they fired me *the new receptionsit* and made her a receptionsit)

I would just reiterate what you said. You confirmed the day before that they would not be doing the BG check. You were there for a dental follow up and wouldn't be paying for the BG check. The office needs to think about how they do customer service. I took Neko in to her vet a couple weeks ago for a blood pressure test, and it was an epic fail (barky dog, long wait due to emergency, Neko shaking/hissing, BP through the roof). My vet said she wouldn't charge for the failure. If you don't want the vet to "interpret" the numbers, then that's not a service you asked for and you shouldn't pay.

I call BS on that. There is no reason for you to pay for a test that YOU toom with YOUR supplies...

I, too, sent a link to Skooter's spreadsheet to the vet...they print it on his visit days, tell me he is doing awesome and how I should be training them on FD.

I would either call and ask to speak to the vet or advise them that you will be contacting the Better Business Bureau regarfimg this as well as write reviews on sites like Yelp (I think they do more than just restauranta now)...

That is just plain wrong

Yeah when they called me tonight, she said she had talked to the doctor and that's their policy and what they charge and the doctor had to take her time to look at the spreadsheet to be able to tell me if i need to increase/decrease his #s etc. Well wtf, if i had known that I wouldnt have brought the ss.
Plus like i said i can interpret it myself and trust most people on here more then the vets advice! Yes, she did a great job with his teeth/extractions, but for $1000+ you'd think something as silly as 'interpretting numbers" would have been explained better.... or included.
Why is the whole 'follow up' included in the price, but the reading numbers isnt?!?
I dont get it.
ARGH!

I'd put it all in writing, including naming the person who ok'd it on the phone yesterday, and send it to the vet. Refuse to pay and tell them if you receive a bill you'll file a complaint with the BBB and on Yelp.

Unless you get regular dosing advice from the vet, it was more you doing it to placate their need for information - not to benefit you.

That's bs.

I would write them an official letter and tell them that you are not going to pay that part of the invoice. You had cleared it with them before the procedure and they had confirmed. Next time, be sure to get in writing exactly what they are going to do and ask them to itemize the expenses. Then you can reply in writing if you don't want any of the procedures.
(I see that as I was writing this, Julie responded with the same advice.)

I'm with Julie and Ella, I'd put it in writing addressed to the vet - saying how upset you are but politely and mentioning that you've cancelled the 2 week follow up . I can't imagine any vet that values their business not responding with an apology for the 'misunderstanding', assuring you that you will not be charged the extra and requesting that you still come in for the follow up.

You're definitely not overreacting - but in those circumstances I suspect I might have!

i agree with everyone else. there is no way i would pay that fee. put in writing that they told you it would be no charge.
With that kind of hussle...(cause that's what it is, ) i would be searching for another vet. that is really unconscionable.
