Celi, cute pic!
Thanks Iorwen, Amy, Linda, Michelle, Ann & Tess, and Ella for visiting Maggie.

I had a call from the Vet, (another Vet in same clinic). My vet had surgery and is in just the mornings. Maggie's Bun and Creatinine are still Stage Two renal disease, no change, there, but her Phosphorus levels are up, so we are going to add a Phosphorus binder to her food. Even though the phosphorus level isn't out of range yet, it's creeping up, and they feel it's good to start it at this time and letting her eat her usual lc high protein food with the addition of the phosphorus binder. It's a powder and one they suggest as it's palatable and mixes in well. Maggie had some sugar in her urine this time, and although they think I'm doing a good job monitoring her with my spot checks, Vet feels a fructosamine test would be helpful. Originally my Vet said he didn't feel she needed a fructosamine test, as he sees her ss weekly, but this was before we got the lab results back. Any comments with the sugar in urine. There's no UTI.

"Sweet Pee!"

sorry, but i don't know a thing about sugar in their urine, and at least that will bump your post...

I also give a binder to Cleo. She doesn't seem to mind it and I guess it doesn't have any taste since she wouldn't touch it if it tastes bad. I get mine from thrivingpets.com.

I don't know what the difference is in doing a fructosomine check and checking Maggie's blood sugar on a regular basis. Not sure why that is needed but maybe someone who has more experience with this will chime in. I always thought that with all our testing, we would never need to do a fructosomine check.

Hi Georgia, I questioned it, too, as the Vet mentioned even though I do a good job on monitoring her, the fructosamine test would be helpful with the findings of sugar in the the urine. I himhawed around a bit and then decided to give the go ahead on it and see what they learn. I should have the results on it either tomorrow or Monday for sure. I'm glad to hear that Cleo doesn't notice any difference in taste with the binders.

Re: 1/6 Maggie AMPS 191; +3 134; +5 147; PMPS 245 Lab result

The fructosamine test will reflect an average of what the BG readings have been over the last few weeks. Vets seem to like to have a nice cut and dry number to work with. It probably will not give you much more info than your home tests have been giving you.

The glucose in the urine means that the BG has gone over the renal threshold, the point at which the kidneys allow glucose to spill into the urine. At some time between the last urination and the time at which the urine sample was obtained, the kidneys have allowed glucose to be excreted. The renal threshold varies from one individual to another. Bear Man had quite a low renal threshold, likely because of his renal disease. This is something you can also spot check at home if you are interested in trying to pinpoint where the renal threshold is, by testing urine with Diastix. Keep in mind that the results look back over a period of hours since the last urination.

If you are at the point where you are starting the use of a phosphorus binder, you may want to start looking into the phosphorus content of the foods you are feeding. You are right that you may not need to restrict protein, however feeding a lower phosphorus food will help get the phosphorus levels down. There is a very informative page about phosphorus on Tanya's CRF website.

Thanks so much Linda and Bear Man for explaining what happens when there is glucose in the urine and also for the info on phosphorus on Tanya's website. I really need to get on her site often and research as there is so much good info there on renal disease. I've been feeding Maggie Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken which is 0.31 for the phosphorus. She loves it, but I probably should have her on another one with lower phosphorus. Thanks again.

Hi Ann - I could not have said it better than Linda did - she knows this stuff so well. Tanya's website is very good as Linda stated. I know too that Ann of Ann and Tess has been researching foods - she may be of help too. She does post the phosphorous content of the foods she feds daily in her condo. It is good to read that Maggie's renal values have remained constant - that I think is good news. :-D Yes too on what she wrote about the fructosamine test. vets love that test - I just don't see the purpose, since we all home test so much. Mine finally gave up asking me to have one done.

Have a great evening! Maggie - good job girl. You rock!

Hi Ann and Mags: late posting but I wanted to see about the test results. I'm sorry the phosphorus is up but Linda (Bear Man) gave you great info as did Georgia on where to get the binder cheap. I also order my aluminum hydroxide from www.thrivingpets. com. What is Maggie's phosphorus level? If her phosphorus is under 6, the dosing is 25 mg/lb. There are 300 mgs in 1/4 tsp of aluminum hydroxide powder. Lte me know if you need dosing for over 6.

Have a great evening.

Re: 1/6 Maggie AMPS 191; +3 134; +5 147; PMPS 245 Lab result

Looks like you and Miss Mags have been getting some great advice about the lab results and fructosamine test! :-D

I believe Sienne once posted on our condo, when we were asking about the need for a fructosamine test when we were regularly testing, that she picked her battles with the vet and this was one she was willing to let go of. Must be a "gold standard" test as it seems so many vets want to do these regularly. It is not an expensive test with our clinic, so we go ahead with it if the vet wants it.

Paws crossed the new treatments are helpful for Maggie. :YMHUG:
