Hi guys,

So I've gotten some good advice to begin posting here now that I'm home testing and have everything set up on my spreadsheet. So my scarred-ear Kitten has survived three testing todays, all three successful, so its a happy household - except for me having to scrub the couch due to a couple of head flicks after the poke.

We started Lantus on Dec 27th, and I guess I was hoping that magically the numbers would be lower already. I guess that's why Kit's still not his usual self. I really wish we had started testing sooner, but hindsight is always 20/20 right? Still...regrets are there. But my socks are pulled up and I am determined to get this under control!! :)

Today's numbers seemed really high. I mean, he did start at 414 - 2 weeks ago...how is it that they are pretty much the same? Going to do a PMPS and then maybe I can get another test in before going to bed tonight.

Here's hoping to a better tomorrow!!

PMPS 515! OMG, is this supposed to happen? He snuck a couple of bites just before of Sophisticat Salmon Dinner, but was only a couple bites. Could that be the reason?
 
Binks hit some terribly high numbers before the Lantus kicked in and started helping...
I panicked, but soon learned that unless your kitty has been DKA before, the higher numbers are actually safer than the extremely low ones.

hang in there! Kitten will find his way...
and if he's anything like Binks...he'll get to where he doesn't mind the testing.
(Binks actually would lead me to his test rug :lol: )

Hopefully I'll get to that point. His poor ear looks so red and scabby :sad: ...I'm surprised he actually comes near me - I wouldn't! I can't imagine how a kitty may actually get to the point that they come calling for this! Maybe I'm feeling more horrible about it than him

+4 tonight was 372. So entire day in that range. Off to a stable start....

I should keep testing for 3 days before raising .25? (He's also about 14 lbs now...used to be at least 18ish - lost quite a bit of weight)
 
It really does get better and their ears do learn to bleed.

Both of my sugarcats were adopted by me after they became diabetic because their previous owners either couldn't or wouldn't treat their diabetes. I started testing both within minutes of them being in my care, and yet they both love me to death, sleep with my husband and I every night, and purr through their tests. Musette even tells me about it if I'm running late on testing her. Now if these cats don't hate me because for starting to stab them in the ear before we had barely said hello to each other, think about how easy it is for you who Kitten has known most of his life? Neither Maxwell or Musette had any reason to trust me, they had never even seen me before, Kitten already loves and trusts you. :-D

Like anything in life practise makes perfect, the more you test the better you both will become better at it. We call this a dance for a reason, when you first start learning a dance you feel awkward and clumpsy as you start learning the steps, but the more you do it, more you practice the more graceful you become, until your body instinctively starts to move when you hear the music. The same with this dance, its frustrating and overwhelming at first, you feel clumpsy, there are days that you feel like your tripping over your own feet, and you swear you will never be able to remember all the steps in the right order, but if you take it one step at a time, and work it into a routine, pretty soon it will become like brushing your teeth, you will be able do it in your sleep. Your body will almost instinctively go through the routine, I know now after 6 months of testing Musette as much as I test her, and I have the luxery of being to test her alot.. :lol: I have woke up the next morning and have to check the meter's memory to see if I actually tested her or if I just dreamed I did. :roll: There is only one problem with this dance......only the cats can hear the music! So we just have to learn how to follow their lead, and we can teach you how regardless if Kitten decides he wants to dance a Waltz or the Quick-Step...lol. That is the best thing about this board their are folks here that have danced just about every dance there is. :-D

Cats are very smart they pretty quickly figure out that a small prick to the ear is such a small price to pay for that yummy treat that they will get for it. And that those pesky mesquito bite feeling shots make them feel better. You may not be able to train a cat but you can certainly make them think what YOU want them to do is THEIR idea :lol: Plus they are notorious mercenaries, they will do anything for the right price ;-)

Aw, thanks so much. Those words made me change my whole outlook on today. I woke up this morning and tried to get an AMPS, but failed and gave up after 3 tries and cried instead. Yes yes, stuff like that happens when its way too early on a Saturday morning and you just can't seem to understand why nothing is going the way you wanted to. But then I came on here and read that message, it was exactly what I needed. I took a nap and woke up on the right foot and everything has been going better since then. I realized that I'm doing the best I can, and it will keep getting better. I just needed someone to tell me that. So, from my furry household to yours....THANKS! :)

In all the years I have owned cats it wasn't until the last couple of years that I even knew a cat could get diabetes, let alone have their blood sugar checked at home, and I have a whole family of human diabetics. Very few people go out to find a cat and expect that someday they will be giving insulin and testing ears. It just isn't what most of us think of when we think of cat ownership, so reason to be hard on yourself because you are having to learn a new skill set. When you learned to cook I'm sure you had some epic fails...I know I sure did...stuff that the dogs wouldn't even eat. If fact I have some friends who still tease me about my first attempt at green chili.. :lol: I missed the part where I was suppose to seed the jalapenos..oops. What started out as one pot of chili quickly became two as I tried to cool it down enough to actually eat it to no avail. Finally my husband at the time buried it in the backyard next to an old oak tree...and the tree died :o

So if you fail on a test no big deal, it happens, if you miss a shot or give a fur shot it happens. Even after having two diabetics I have still had fur shots happen, we survive to fight another day.

And trust me with my two I couldn't have a clearer picture of Every Cat Is Different. Maxwell was a beautiful floating waltz, he did everything he was suppose to and went OTJ very quickly. Musette, she is a salsa girl, she makes me do all kinds of fancy foot work to keep up with her. They each dance to their own music and the best I can do is try to follow their lead. But Life happens, we are only human, we will forget things we will get distracted with other things, and somedays no matter how skilled you are or how well you know what you are doing, they will throw you a curve ball, they are afterall still cat! :-D If we wanted predictability we would own dogs. ;-)

and boy is Musette the cutest thing ever! She's standing there all beautiful and proper ...

And i couldn't help laughing about the chili and the tree. I did that with Chicken and Rice once. Someone told me that the easiest recipe is put chicken breast in the oven, throw mushroom soup over it, and then add rice..then ta da! Well no one told me I was supposed to COOK the rice before I added it!

Glad the first curve day is done....I need a good sleep after that one!
