I switched to 6% at +1 today, and saw a big ol' drop. It's frustrating because 9% seems to keep her flat or stop her slide down, and 6% lets her drop so much more. I have to run out today to get some wrapping paper for presents for a birthday party tomorrow, so I think I'm gonna see if Petco or Petsmart has something that is actually 8 or 9% and see if that works better, instead of just mixing and matching to create a frankensteined 9%.

Hi Alicia, I do hope Kit will work this dose for you. These food experiments are so frustrating. Good job keeping track of the carbs.
I find same thing, 6% doesn’t stop a drop for Ivy. She needs more, but I’ve been told to let her drop and save the carbs for when she’s under 50, but then inevitably she bounces up to Mars, the red planet. It’s a vicious cycle

I hope you have more luck with this carb saga!

Right? And if it's something that's not in a local pet store, then you have to order so many cans, and what if they don't like it? I found a few things I'm gonna see if she likes. I'm also trying to keep an eye on the phosphorus percentage since I should be looking at that as well.

She's just being so weird. Sometimes 6% seems to slow her, and sometimes it does nothing. But I've got some other things to try (including something that was 7%), so we'll see what happens.

Thanks - I hope she responds. I know they need the dose they need, but we haven't gone above 1.5 before, so I'm a bit bummed. Stupid lizard brain.

I'm also slightly worried that the antibiotics didn't clear up the UTI as well as I'd hoped. She's not peeing outside the litter box, but the pee is definitely not as big of clumps in the litter box as it usually is, and she's easing into a loaf the way she was not long before she started peeing on the floor. So I'll be keeping an eye on that as well.

Speaking to that lizard brain, it's not uncommon for a kitty out of remission to have to go to a higher dose. And the sooner you can get her tightly regulated again, the greater the odds of another remission.

We didn't do a urine culture - the vet wanted to get antibiotics started, and Kit had peed right before the vet got here, so her bladder was pretty empty.

Yeah, the logical part of my brain knows its harder and that I need her in remission. The overly emotional and non logical part just gets sad sometimes. We'll see how the rest of tonight goes - she had a pretty big drop from +1 to +2.

I’m not sure who told you this but it’s not correct. Many cats do better with 9-10% carbs and it is still low carb.

When managing the curve with food, the goal is to keep them flat which can then allow you to often get more insulin safely in the kitty. The goal is for the curve to stay flat as the dose eventually comes down.

We don’t want to feed MC or HC habituallyto flatten the curve although if I had a cycle where Gracie was dropping fast, early, I’d use 13% to slow that train down.

I worked very hard to keep Gracie from dropping using a 9% food on a regular basis.

In summary, if 9-10% food keeps a kitty flatter, then go for it.

I too find that higher LC works better with Mikan to curve down the drama and also, she eats more consistently.

The overly emotional and non logical part just gets sad sometimes.

That's absolutely normal and reasonable. We just want to see our babies doing well and healthy. To be sad is to be a caring human

Hi Marje, I just read this response. (Sorry to hijack your post, Alicia.)
Ivy is not very carb sensitive and her regular 6% diet doesn’t do much if she’s dropping. And yes, I’ve been told many times to let her drop so she gets used to lower green healing numbers.
Problem is when she drops in the first 3 hours of a cycle, it can be very extreme. She can go from 400 down to under 100 within 3 hours. Sometimes drops over 100 points in an hour or less. (I watch her drops on her Libre sensor).
Then I check with an ear prick to verify on a handheld meter if she goes to very low numbers.
Then of course later in the cycle she can bounce back up to 400 again (highest number the Libre 3 reads). And the cycle repeats.
You can see these cycles on her SS.
All that said, would you suggest using 9% or 12.5% frequently if I see these big drops early in her cycle before and at onset? (I make her food so that’s the carbs I have to use in my recipes).
