Butthead has been on oral chemo Palladia for 1 week now. Took him for a blood test (CBC) yesterday, and a little while ago got a call that it is "normal". He seems to be behaving normally as well. Got another carful and lapful of fur from yesterday's trip. Boy does Butthead love to travel.

The pilling escapades continue. Took ~4 tries to get the 2nd dose in him. Thought it went down, but nope, there's the pill stuck to his arm. Then nope, there it is stuck to his bib. Ptooey. Ptooey. Cream cheese everywhere. For the 3rd dose, we tried putting it in part of a pill pocket. He had eaten a pill pocket earlier, but I made the mistake of putting the pill pocket in a dish of baby food, and that made it very slippery for him to pick up and eat. He's a sloppy eater anyway, and was more interested in getting more yummy baby food than expending the effort to eat that suspicious slick little pill bomb. So it took a few tries to get that down his throat the hard way. I have not been able to locate a pill gun locally, so bought one off eBay. Should be here soon. Shortly after the trauma he turns back into happy purry Butthead, so apparently he's not holding it against me.

One day at a time.

Donovan's is doing OK too. I still test him 3x a week. He's been throwing low blues at me recently, but he's never been one to hang out in lower greens anyway.

Thank you all for your continued support. I really need it.

yaaay! normal behavior is good!
as frustrating as pilling can be, i had to smile when reading your descriptions. they sound oh-so-familiar! lol!
good luck with the pill gun. hope it works out well for you!

That sounds like a good report! :-D I'm so happy the CBC was normal and that Butthead is acting normal. He sounds like such a sweetie. We will continue to send healing vines and prayers for full recovery.

Glad Butthead is doing better. That sure brings back memories of when I was trying to give my GA Siamese kitty his cytoxan pill and others. It will get easier. Hello to Donovan kitty, too!

A tip I just received for pilling a dog was to use several pill pockets, not just one.

Put the pill in one and reserve it. Offer the dog the empty pill pocket(s). After they eat those...offer the spiked one. Supposedly in their treat greed they gulp in down without a second thought.

Don't know if it would work with a cat, but certainly worth the try of a few pill pockets... confused_cat

Edit: What I do is use butter as a coating. Place the cat between my knees. Open their mouth like I was bridling a horse. With the other hand place the pill way back in their throat. Close the mouth, tap the nose and blow in their face to trigger the swallowing reaction.

I am so glad that Butthead is tolerating the chemo. That is great news.

Forgive me if someone has already suggested either rolling the pill pocket (containing the pill) in crumbled temptations, or making a sandwich with pill pocket inside and temptations on the outside (or you can do an open face sandwich). Suck him in first with a real temptation. I have also found that dog pill pockets are much stinkier, and that some cats like them.

So glad to hear that Butthead is doing so well with his chemo, despite the pilling adventure. I have no tips. I could never get Stu to take his pills. The pill gun worked the best, but it wasn't easy, either!
Lots more healing vines heading Butthead's way!

The duck and pea (allergy formula) pill pockets are pretty stinky. Gabby LOVES them. I'm so glad to hear that Butthead is his purry self.

Great update.. I don't know if my tip will help.. but a long time ago Sadi & Baby's vet gave me a tip on how to pill & I have never had a problem pilling either of them since. I wet my index finger with water fairly well, open their mouth, stick the pill in the back of their throat.. while rubbing my wet index finger on their nose.. I dont know if it is a reflex to swallow when their nose is wet or being rubbed or if it is just the lesser of two evils, but try it sometime... I pilled Sadi 2 pills tonight without issue & have for years ;-)

MJ.. so glad to read good news on Butthead.. :-D

Sounds like pilling is a lot of work but all worth it.. Frip took his Diabeta (Glyburide) on his own mixed in the FF (but it probably doesn't taste/smell anything)..

More healing vines for Butthead..

Great news about Butthead!!!! I'm with Sienne on the duck/pea pill pockets. Gracie and Tobey would not eat ANY of the others but they scarf the duck and pea.

Hope you have success and continue to get good reports, MJ.

Success!

Butthead ate the pill pocket (I used half to cover the pill). Then I offered him some baby food (slurp slurp slurp), and the other half of the pill pocket -- REJECTED. He knew there was more baby food left, and he wanted *that*. Don't know how long this little trick will work, but there was no bloodshed tonight. If it fails, I will try some of the tricks you all have suggested.

Thank you...

I am so glad that Butthead is doing better, that the BW was good. Great news!

Love the pill stories. And all the hints. I hope I can remember them all when it is my turn to deal with pills and a cat. Mannie has a dental next week, and will also have fatty cyst removed from his back at the same time. I am so not looking forward to that, and I am sure there will be some pilling involved after that. oh goodie.

GO BUTTHEAD!

The Pill ate his pill!!! sweet!

love the video, cyn...

hang in there MJ...we're long distance...but we're rooting for you and the furkiddies!

Sounds like Butthead is doing better. :-D :thumbup I've used the pill shooter with good luck , but just came across this super duper model http://www.vetdepot.com/Buster-Pet-Piller-with-Soft-Tips.html It will shoot water in right after the pill to get them to swallow.

Yup, that looks like the kind I bought off eBay. Hopefully it will be here soon. Have to be careful not to get the pill wet ahead of time or it will disintegrate, which the vet does not want to happen (or else I'd mix it in with his food). There is only a thin coating on it. Cream cheese/butter is OK since it's mostly made of fat.

Keeping all of you in our thoughts and Prayers cat_pet_icon

P.S Everytime I look at your picture of Donovan, I think what a beautiful cat. The white wiskers are stunning.
