Thanks for the visits yesterday, Julie, Jane, and Rachel.

This morning's shot didn't go very well because right as I was inserting the syringe, Ebby lunged forward for a treat and I think the needle hit her muscle pretty hard (hurt her some.) I pulled the syringe out, but most of the insulin was gone, so I wasn't sure if I gave a fur shot or shot muscle. Numbers are coming down though, so must not have been a fur shot.

Last night after I saw the +2 test was pretty stable, I was going to give myself and Ebby a break from the late night testing, so did not set an alarm. Yes, the alarm never went off, but at +4 Ebby started kicking the bedroom door so it would bang against the door stop. (She has learned this is the best way to get me up.) So, I got up and gave her a test thinking maybe she was trying to tell me something. It was a very stable 143. So went back to bed and at +6 Ebby came into the bedroom and started meowing very loud. It was a very deep meow that sounding like "Hey, you're forgetting about me." So, got up again and gave another test, some treats, and some food. It was not the nice restful sleep I had hoped for.

Re: 1/5 Ebby AMPS 223 +3 96

Awww, Ebby wanted some loves and attention! And fuds  Sorry about the ouchie  they do like to do that move on us sometimes! That's a nice +3 though, I hope she surfs it safe  Have a nice Sunday :-D

Re: 1/5 Ebby AMPS 223 +3 96 +5 45

 great story! apparently Ebby is used to having your attention during the night!

wow on the 45 today!

Re: 1/5 Ebby AMPS 223 +3 96 +5 45 +5.5 88

Thanks for the visits! Sorry to leave everyone hanging on the 45. I realized I didn't update once I got her in safe numbers. Once she was stable I rushed out the door to run a couple errands. Yep, definitely not a fur shot!

Re: 1/5 Ebby AMPS 223 +3 96 +5 45 +5.5 88

Very nice surf going on for Miss Ebby!
She sure knows how to get you up when she wants something  I don't think any on this board could ignore a middle of the night wake up call like that!

Have a good night, Melissa!

Re: 1/5 Ebby *Used R First Time*

**Using R**

I felt this was a good time to try the R. Caught a fairly substantial rise at +10 and we saw a 45 today so I figure she is in the process of bouncing pretty good from this.

I shot 0.1 unit at +10 when she rose to 298.

I measured the dose several times, but it sure didn't feel like I shot anything it was so tiny.

??? She has food on board from probably +7 or so but should I feed more since I shot the R?

Re: 1/5 Ebby *Used R First Time*

oh my!

you want to check every hour for the next 5 hours and record it on her ss. it'd be good to put it in your subject line too. Record it as +10/298, +11/+1R xxx.

You don't need to feed extra with the R. You're just monitoring to see what it does every hour at this point.

Re: 1/5 Ebby *Used R First Time*

Wow...we have 2 first time "R" users tonight! Great time for learning!

Good luck with the "R" Melissa!

Re: 1/5 Ebby *Used R First Time*

It's going to be helpful if you put her numbers in the subject line so people looking at the main page can help monitor what you've got going on.

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298

Oh, I didn't see until now that Rebekah had used it too. Must have been something in the air. I'm getting a +11 test very soon and will post.

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298

perfect! what's your minutes after the hour that you shot and are testing?

must be the air - and at least we can watch both of you at the same time! :-D

btw, good choice of timing. i saw Libby's post from early Dec where she suggested you find the fast rise at the beginning of a bounce and do it then. you hit that nail on the head today!

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11/ +1 R 300

Julie, I shot R at 8:15 central time.

Yes, I'd tried in the past to find a good time to use it, and it just never felt right for various reasons. With that big rise between +9 and +10 I just felt it was the right time to try it. Thanks for checking in on us!

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11/ +1 R 300

absolutely! don't want you flying solo on your first time!

most of the time 0.1u doesn't do much, but Ebby isn't a high dose cat so it might do more than i experienced with punkin.

the best use of R is just to prevent that super high that can cause a plummet when it comes down. so even if we see her stay flat, that's doing something good for her.

our goal isn't to cause a fast drop because that can set up a bounce cycle from highs to low to highs to lows.

have you been reading all the R info posts on Ozy, Ole' and Cobb's posts? There was quite a bit on Ole's condo today if you haven't and you want to review anything.

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11/ +1R 300 PMPS/+2R 224

Wow, I like my magic R.

How do you feel this curve is shaping up? Is that a good amount of drop? Too much?

Ebby can have an early onset with Lantus, so I hope she doesn't drop too much by +1 (R +3), but I guess we'll see what happens!

I've been following the R discussion with Ozy's condo, and looked over Ole's condo. I need to take a look at Cobb's...I don't think I saw the R discussion on that. Plenty of time tonight to read up on those!

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11 (R +1) 300, PMPS (R+2) 224

Cobb's was a few days ago. They haven't tried it yet - Cobb's come down a bit with the Lantus today.

Looks great so far. I'm thinking she would've been much higher by now if you hadn't used it.

I think it looks like a good dose. you're really just wanting to hold the numbers down so the Lantus can do its thing. and I think this has accomplished it with just that tiny dose. So essentially, the pmps is 224 instead of 400+ that it would likely otherwise have been.

The 2nd of Jan looks like it was a similar day cycle and the pmps was 530 that night. the R has changed everything - in my eye. i'll be curious to see other opinions too.

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11 (R +1) 300, PMPS (R+2) 224

I agree Julie. I think she was headed for the high 400's or 500's. I think I'm in love with R....so far.

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11 (R +1) 300, PMPS (R+2) 224

Hi Melissa,
I'm glad R is working good for Ebby!!
Good luck!!

Re: 1/5 Ebby Used R +10 298, +11 (R +1) 300, PMPS (R+2) 224

Melissa

I also use R with Gracie from time to time. I often find that her most active time (e.g. Change in BG) is between +2 and +3 and then she will often (but not always) slow down between +3 and +4. When I first started using it, she'd go right back up after the R was done but then it would stop the bounce, she started coming down and just staying down.

I hope you see a good response with Ebby.

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144

hi melissa!

i'm seeing the +2/R+4 144. i know it's late, but i want to encourage you to keep monitoring Ebby tonight. It looks like the Lantus is onsetting as well.

hang in there!

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144

~O) Julie, I'll keep monitoring. I'll get a Lantus +3(R+5) and then I might take an hour nap, and wake up to get a Lantus +5(Unless numbers dictate a +4 test too.) She did have a pretty big drop from +1 to +2, but not all too different than her normal Lantus cycle so hopefully it will slow down a little from here on. Thanks again for looking after us. :YMHUG:

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144

of course! the R should be petered out about now so she should slow down. but because we are learning how ebby reacts it's good to keep an eye on the sweet little girl!

you must be tired. a nap is a good idea. i used to snooze on the sofa with the light on and my cell alarm set on high to make sure i woke up. you're doing so well with this. :-D

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144

Thanks Julie, and thanks for calling Ebby a sweet little girl. She really is, and has been so good tonight with all of the ear pokes.

Her +3 is 107 and this feels like it's shaping up to be a pretty normal Lantus cycle, so I think I will feed a little more and take an hour break and get a +5, although I probably won't get back on board to post that. Thanks again for the help!

And thanks for the visits today, Rachel, Jane, Chris, Mariko, and Marje! :YMHUG: Marje, thanks for the added info on the R curve...it helps to know when to expect the biggest drops.

Ok, off to go dream about magic R. I-) :thumbup I-)

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144, +3(R+5)

i'm headed for bed. school starts back up tomorrow so it's a work day for me.

you can see how powerful the R insulin is - one drop knocked that bounce to its knees. that's why it's not for every cat or a person to use without care. it is a good tool to use once you've learned it, though. at least at this point, i don't think ebby would need more than this tiniest dose, and i'd only use it as the bounce started with a fast rise, just like you did tonight.

You'll also have to watch carefully, because eventually cats bounces become half-hearted and they stop bouncing. don't want to use it if it's not needed.

great job tonight! i hope you sleep well when you do crash.

Re: 1/5 Ebby PMPS(R+2)224, +1(R+3) 237, +2(R+4) 144, +3(R+5)

Hi Melissa

Looks like Ebby had a pretty good response last night to the R. As you probably remember, we look for it to slow/stop the bounce. Seeing a drop of 50-100 mg/dL is about the most you want to see. A couple things I have noticed about using R:

--the same dose given as the bounce starts does not always result in the same curve,

--it is not unusual to see lower numbers the cycle of of the cycle after using R. When I use it, I make sure I see a rising number because even though it's effects might be over by R+4, it often opens the door for the basal insulin to work.

I hope you see some nice numbers today.
