TLDR: what to do with 0.5 units BID glargine when going low carb (16% to 4%)?

Since Wilbur is on such low insulin, we are switching from his current food (RC limited ingredient PD, 16% carbs) with the occasional dry food RC HP (stupid amount of carbs) when he snubs then wet food.

The limiting factor before was his civvie sister and the disruption to the clowder seemed excessive when he was on so much insulin a few weeks ago (ie an insurmountable hill).

Now it feels like we might be able to get him off insulin and want to switch the diet.

After doing a deep nutrient dive today and spatial research, we found food we feel safe having in the house and a solution to better control/track intake.

The enclosures arrive in a few weeks but the food arrives this week. If we go slowly from about 16% carbs (RC PD) to a 4% carb food (wellness complete turkey) for his wet and a limited amount of dry (going from 37% carb to 27% carb), what should we do with his insulin?

Since he is at 0.5 units bid, do we:
1) stop entirely
2) cut to 0.25 units bid
3) try to do 0.1 units bid

he never had ketones and I am planning on switching the food next weekend so we’re home with them.

again a million thanks!!!

Hi ! Wilbur is a handsome guy ! Since it is the weekend it might take a while for your questions to be answered by more experienced Board members so hang tight and maybe bump up your thread if it starts slipping to far down the line here. Experienced eyes will see and respond :)

No worries! I just like to have a plan in mind and we aren’t changing over for several more days.

Wilbur says thank you for the compliment and the advice!!

What food are you switching to? From a wet food to a dry food?

I think generally the idea is to slowly wean them off insulin as you are changing the food over...but I am not 100% sure. With my guy I did the food but not the insulin and he had some trouble holding a insulin dose and was dropping quite a bit , so clearly I didn't get the correct memo on how to do it :)

I’ll edit my original post - switching from wet RC PD (16%) to wellness complete chicken (4%). He free feeds. We also are planning on have relatively lower carb dry food for the civvies (in case he gets into it, one of civvies will be hard to switch to all wet) but tightly watch food bowls until the special food enclosures arrive.

thanks!!

It’s hard to predict in advance how strongly cats will react to the change. Let Wilbur’s numbers guide you.
