Cheryl & Whiskers (GA)

Member Since 2010
Whiskers is still high. Black Red Pink. I was able to obtain a new lantus pen this afternoon. I will use it tonight. Question do I stay at 1.5 units with the pen versus the vial I was using?

I am going to check Whiskers BG again now and than am off to work. I will check back later.

Thanks

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 Question on new lantus pen?

Great news, you got the Lantus Pen, did they take the coupon I gave you? I hope you can see some better #s soon! I will let someone else answer about the dosecrease, it seems like it is time - but expert eyes need on your SS since I am not qualified to give dosing advice :-D

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 Question on new lantus pen?

The dose from the pen and from a vial should be exactly the same. It's the same insulin. You use a syringe (not the needle that may have come with the pen) to draw the insulin from the pen. There's a gasket under the plastic cap and at the top of the pen where you insert the needle. Here's a picture from the how to handle Lantus/Lev sticky. The only difference with using the pen is that you do not want to inject air into the cartridge or inject insulin back into the container. Overfill the syringe, remove it from the pen, and then adjust your dose to the 1.5u.

If the insulin you were using was toasty, it may take a few days to get the shed refilled.

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 Question on new lantus pen?

I have a good feeling that Whiskers will come down on the new pen--You will like it--easier to handle than the little vial or cartridge
Easy to see, I love the pens--Whiskers--we want some lower numbers-OK?? Good luck with the pen

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 +2.5 215 what does toasty mean?

Hi Everyone,

The vial of insulin I was using was expired. I had read here that some people us it longer. It was approximatly 75 days old. Is that what toasty means?
We are using 1.5units twice daily (bid?) I am hopeful that a new unused pen will give us better results.

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 +2.5 215 what does toasty mean?

Hi Cheryl,
Yes, "toasty" is exactly what you are thinking. Old, expired, damaged, not as effective as it should be.
If your other insulin was expired its possible there could be some really great numbers comin' your way. You may want to do some extra tests to see what a difference this new insulin makes for whiskers.

Numbers have been running quite high for a while. I forget are you testing for ketones with ketostix that you can buy at the pharmacy?

How's whiskers been feeling? No more urinating outside the box? I imagine she is drinking A LOT and just couldnt hold it. Keep an eye on it though because urinating outside the box can be a symptom of other things. Ive used nature's miracle, which is easy to pick up at a chuck/don's, maybe even petco??? If youre looking for something quick to work on the smell.

Hope your night is good!

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 +2.5 215 what does toasty mean?

Toasty (like in, "Your insulin is toast.") means that your Lantus has lost it's effectiveness. Sometimes the insulin will develop particles ("floaties"). Other times, you will start getting weird numbers. Recently, a pharmacy tech mishandled my Lantus. Gabby's numbers went wonky. They replaced my insulin.

The manufacturer of Lantus recommends that you not use the insulin for more than 28 days. Many people here get longer use than a month from their insulin. 75 days is probably pushing it in terms of the effectiveness of your insulin.

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 +2.5 215

Hi Carolyn and Sienna,

Ok thank you. I'm going to be going home from work soon, and will be trying the new lantus pen. Fingers and paws crossed

Re: 1/4 Whiskers AMPS 412 +2.5 215 PMPS 377

Whiskers PMPS was 377 up again. We used the new lantus pen at 1.5 units. I will check again tonight to see where she is at, and then post it.

Down a little.. great news. I suspect there are blues you would be seeing if you got some +6s or +9s, looking on 12/26 & 12/27 I see she did see some better #s.
Hang in there, I know it is challenging ;-) I have good feelings about the new pen!
