Updated for PMPS: the 418 is a fasting measurement now that I'm learning the feeding pattern and am picking up everyone's food 2 hours before testing and preshot. I never thought I'd hate the color red this much. Just have to sit back and be patient with the dose increase.

AMPS:
Leo is down a bit this morning from his usual preshot.

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=33557 for yesterday's condo.

We'll see how our 25u dose increase works out today. Yesterday we finally worked it out between us how to test him without strife and anguish (hint: ground turkey breast), so I'll be able to get numbers more regularly now.

I've been taking a +11 morning number instead of the PS because he's always hungry early in the morning and I don't see the point in making him wait if he needs to eat--he needs to gain weight, and oh that voice of his! Does a big morning meal throw his PS number off? If yes, then I might need to slowly move our shot times from 9 am and 9pm to 8 am and 8 pm to accommodate his desired breakfast hour. This is done in 15 minute increments, right?

I'm liking the effect of giving him frequent small meals--he's putting on weight after getting horribly skinny pre dx. Is this going to throw his numbers off, or is it OK if I'm consistent about it?

Thanks to everyone who replied to yesterday's condo and gave support.

Re: 1/4 Leo AMPS 375 and another ???

Good morning. I have not posted in your condo before so welcome.

You might be better off moving your shot time if you need to feed Leo an hour earlier. One hour can make a big difference in numbers. Also if you feed you will be getting a food spike number.

Yes you can move his shot time by 15 minute increments.
Most of us here feed small, frequent meals. We do however suggest you do not feed 2 hours prior to shot time so once again your ps number will not be food influenced.

Have a nice day.

I haven't posted either. Welcome to Lantus Land. Good luck today with your dosecrease.

Have you tried the purebites chicken as a treat yet? Most of the kitties here seem to think its to die for lol.

Good morning! I also don't believe I have posted in your condos before .. so welcome from here as well! I'm glad you found something leo likes so you can test more often .. I also agree, freeze dried chicken chunks were a big hit with mocha in this house .. Maybe moving shot times around would be better for you and leos appetite ... have a great day guys!

Re: 1/4 Leo AMPS 375

I agree with everything Miriam posted. One other option besides moving shot time in 15 min. increments twice a day is that you can move shot time by 30 min. once a day. Getting pre-shot tests is essential. Personally, I find shooting blind frightening, especially once you see Leo's numbers coming down. I gather you found the secret to a successful test -- treats!

Re: 1/4 Leo AMPS 375

Hi Lacie & Leo and welcome to the group.

Good job on your spreadsheet! And good luck with the dose increase. Don't worry if Leo's numbers don't come down as quickly as you would like. It takes a while for a new dose to settle and for the "shed" to fill to the level of the new dose. Just have patience and try to be consistent in your shot times. Feeding a number of smaller meals in the early part of the cycle (e.g., AMPS, +1, +2, +3) works well for lots of people here. Also a snack at about +9 is what a lot of us do. You will have to experiment to see what works best for Leo, however.
Yep, those freeze-dried chicken treats are a big hit in our house, too.
Carry on!

Re: 1/4 Leo AMPS 375

Good morning Lacie and Leo! Nice job linking yesterday's condo, you are doing a great job getting up to speed!

You've gotten great info already on moving the shot, I won't repeat it.

Several small meals is a great idea, many of us do use a "front loading" strategy for food as Ella said. Splitting the PS meal into smaller portions and feeding them at PS, +1, +2 and +3 and a small snack around mid cycle is often what we suggest to start out. You may find that you need to adjust the timing a little since every cat's cycle is different...for example, I feed at PS, +2, +3, +4 and a snack at +6. Many people find that a snack late in the cycle will increase PS numbers, so I don't feed after +6. As Miriam said, don't feed during the 2 hours before PS time.

For treats, the freeze dried chicken (or any freeze dried meat/fish) is very popular, and they do LOVE it! I use boiled chicken breast, cut into small pieces. I boil a couple of breasts at a time, cut them up and freeze them. Then I pull out small amounts at a time to thaw as needed. I have used ground turkey as well...that's fine too!

Re: 1/4 Leo AMPS 375

Welcome to Lantus Land....with the holidays, I think alot of us are a little behind in our welcomes. But you've already gotten some great advice. Just ask lots
of questions. We're happy to have you and Leo as part of the LL family!
