EVEN HEALTHY CATS ACT SICK WHEN THEIR ROUTINE IS DISRUPTED

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A cat regularly vomiting hairballs or refusing to eat probably isn’t being finicky or otherwise “cat-like,” despite what conventional wisdom might say. There is a good chance that the cat is acting sick because of the stress caused by changes in its environment, new research suggests.

Healthy cats were just as likely as chronically ill cats to refuse food, vomit frequently and leave waste outside their litter box in response to changes in their routine, according to the Ohio State University study. Veterinary clinicians refer to these acts as sickness behaviors.

The researchers documented sickness behaviors in healthy cats and in cats with feline interstitial cystitis, a chronic illness characterized by recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and often both an urgent and frequent need to urinate.

The two groups had the same number of sickness behaviors in response to unusual events, and both groups were at more than three times the risk of acting sick when their routines were disrupted.

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176

That's good info Blue. On the feline assisted feeding group - cats stop eating for a number of reasons - illness of course but also anything that causes them stress for some cats. One cat stopped eating because their litter was changed. Others due to home renovations, boarding, going away on vacation, changes in food (some are sensitive to recipe changes by the manufacturer), new babys, loss in the family etc. These cats are susceptible to getting FHL. I'm glad you posted this!!!!

Glad Atlas cleared his bounce. He is a beautiful boy!!!! I think Pestering should be a bonus P. Maverick is earning a few of them with his early morning chatting.

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176

Good morning guys! I'm also glad that atlas cleared the bounce .. this blue looks good on him! Have a great day guys!

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176

Great AMPS! The bounce did clear quickly, I hope he sees some pretty greens for you today, Beth.

I'm sorry I've missed your condo lately, life gets in the way sometimes. I was reading back a few days...I hope you are feeling better about things now. :YMHUG:

THat bounce cleared quickly. Very nice start to the day for Atlas!

So this raises a question...since I didn't feed with karo, HC, or MC or even "extra food" off his schedule....do you think that contributed to clearing the bounce...faster?

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176

I doubt it. Bouncing really has nothing to do with food, it's hormone related.

When they start clearing bounces faster, that's a sign that their liver is starting to learn something in LTS. :-D

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176

Beth: see how much better things got? I knew they would because you are so diligent!!! Great AMPS for Attie and he did so well clearing that very brief bounce.

Thanks for the interesting article! CATS HATE CHANGE!

How are YOU doing??? Extra hugs. :-D

Re: 1/4 Atlas 176, +9 191

Hi Marjorie,

Oh...thanks for the hugs. Sometimes we can just get so disappointed with situations.

New year and it is time to pick oneself up and dust yourself off....The new future stretches out in front of us and we must choose which life trail to travel or life WILL decide it for us. Let us choose the one less traveled and become better...for it will make all the difference in our lives. ~~Attie

Sounds good anyway!!! ohmygod_smile

Hi Laurie...look at that sure seems to be surfing some nice numbers....what a wonderful plus 9!

Great article, thank you for sharing. Atlas is looking like a blue surfer boy & he wears it well.... ;-)

Don't say anything about the surf. Just look up, scuff your feet, whistle and when Attie leaves the room, do a happy dance!

You also know that someone is going to read that OSU study, decide that kitties are hypochondriacs and want to give them kitty Prozac!
