Aww Tim, no worries at all. I’m always on the lookout for finding and trying new toys for activity stimulation. Unfortunately there are no safety regulations governing sale of pet toys and merchandise. I once had a cat cubby that had a hard plastic ring around the round entrances and one of those rings somehow got stuck around my cat’s neck. Ugh.

. Oh yes. Spot on with the “for now” part too. I can’t believe how sensitive she is to what I think are tiny tiny amounts, especially given her overall high dose. Even now at 7.25 and using the syringes with half unit marks, as I eyeball the dosage in between 7 and 7.5, I know its not consistent and some days maybe she gets 7.1 or 7.4 and I think that matters with her. I also have a feeling that there are variations in the precision across syringe lot numbers. I’ve only ever used vials, but I see many use the pens and I’ve wondered if the operation of the pens allow more precise dosing, but when I tried reading how the pens work I got the impression they don’t have dosing increments down to quarter unit so I figured I’d still have same challenge. So I do the best I can with my giant magnifying glass when I draw the insulin.

What a beautiful cycle for Minner!
Love the video. She looks so happy playing ball with you ❤️

Have you thought about using calipers for dosing so it’s much more consistent? I use them and I really love using them. It makes it so much easier to measure.

You still have to be able to see well, but once the caliper are set, you just line it up to the syringe and ignore the lines.

There’s a wonderful post on here with instructions and very detailed video that Marje put together that’s really helpful.
I strongly suggest you try that especially since Minner is so sensitive to slight changes in dosing. (I find the same thing with Ivy, so it’s really helpful).

Thank you so much Staci. I did read about the calipers some time back and at the time it seemed like it would be hard to establish the initial setting. If I recall, you had to gather a bunch of syringes and somehow use them to determine the caliper setting. I was so overwhelmed with everything else at the time that my brain set that aside as something interesting but not necessary. I really appreciate you bringing this up … you’re also validating my hunch that in some cats these minuscule amounts can make a difference. I will go back and find the post to re-read now that it appears this could really help. If you don’t mind I’m going to come back with questions for you.

Hi Laura, I know exactly what you’re saying. The first time I read it I was completely overwhelmed and confused by the whole thing, and I walked away from it, but at some point, Marje convinced me to reread it, and she was able to guide me quite easily to using them. And now that I do, it’s actually quite simple. It’s just a calculation based on the dose. You don’t even use multiple syringes at all.

Basically what I do is take the dose that I want to give say that is 3 units and multiply by 1.32 mm (which is the measurement for Relion syringes) and that gives me a measurement of 3.96 mm on the calipers.

I then go to the calipers, zero it out, and then set the calipers to 3.96 mm digitally and then every time I turn the calipers on the arms are set there and I just line the arms up against the syringe and that’s my dose.
I hope that makes sense, but take a look at the post and see if you can find your syringes listed in the post (which makes it very easy to figure out the calculation).

Omg this is great. I see now that the multiple syringe thing is if you need to establish the mm to unit ratio for s syringe brand, but I would not need to do that b/c I use the Ulticare VetRx and it’s on Marje’s list, 1.25mm =1u.

I’m assuming that when you first convert to calipers you could see some glucose changes due to other variations like where on the syringe mark I use, top/middle/bottom, when I say I’m at a given dose. Right now I’m in between marks with the 7.25 so no biggie. Regardless it seems this would be a one time transition that could yield some dose tweaking, but after that you are all set.

I already have the lighted magnifying glass and coincidentally I just bought a light pad for doing diamond painting which should work just like any light box. Just need to buy the calipers!

I ordered a calipers from Amazon got it a day or two later, set it up and started using it. I didn’t really notice a big difference even from the start.
Just order one or pick one up and get going, and I think it will make you calmer and feel more secure that you’re giving a consistent dose:)

Biggest difference I noticed with calipers was more consistency in numbers. :). Lantus (and Levemir) do seem to like consistent dosing. I felt silly with my higher dose cat making changes by 0.125 units at a time, but it worked. Some cats it doesn't. Definitely an ECID thing. One of my other favourite advantages was being able to lock the dose in the calipers and get DH to do the shooting if I was away.
