Its good to be home. I've been making sure that I get lots of lap time with Blackie and all of the other critters missed us too. So if I'm sitting down, there's always someone waiting for that lap. :-D

Blackie is doing okay, but not as well as I'd hoped. He ate well last night, but not so good this morning. Other than that he seems okay. All other P's are in place. I'm starting to wonder if this is going to be Blackie's new normal and that we won't ever see our hungry kitty back again. I know his pancreatitis was severe, 33.8 was his fPLI, but I had hoped he'd be getting much better by now. DSIL Dee reported that he would lick the dirt when he went outside. She stopped him, but he tried it several times. He did it again yesterday when I let him go outside. I think I'll email our vet and see what he thinks.

WELCOME HOME!! We have missed you. I am sure Blackie has too. It sounds like he is doing OK - weird on the dirt thing, but I have no clue on that. I hope his appetite continues to improve.

Blackie we are glad that you are back online - the gang has missed you! We are off to a tropical island today - you wanna come? it's fun and will help get those numbers down. ~~ Mannie

Pica can be a symptom of anemia. I see that Blackie's HCT/PCV has been trending downwards. While it might just be due to the stress of your trip, it might be worth rechecking his CBC.

Hi Ele & Blackie, and welcome home, Ele & DH! We hope that you had a good vacation. Now that you're home, Blackie can get back in the groove. Interesting about Blackie eating dirt. Was it in a spot where his favorite edible plant grows? Maybe he's looking for springtime!
Have a wonderful evening with your fur family,

Hugs,
Ella & Rusty

Ele --

When was the fPLI run? If it's been enough time, and once you are settled back in, it may be worth talking to your vet. I think Linda has a good point. The pica may be related to anemia or maybe something else is off in Blackie's labs.

Re: 1/30 Blackie amps 359 +6 330

welcome back! I'm glad the others had some insight about dirt licking. I knew it meant something, but couldn't remember what. Hopefully he is just being a cat, but it's probably worth talking to the vet.

Re: 1/30 Blackie amps 359 pmps 231

Thank you to Linda for the info on the dirt. I also knew it might mean something, but didn't know what. The fPLI was run on 1/3/11. I decided to try to skip the Mirtazapine tonight and see what his appetite was without it. He would not even take one bite of food. So I gave him the Mirt and then his fluids a half hour later and then he ate almost all I had given him. I think we're not done with the pancreatitis yet, but I will definately talk or email my vet tomorrow. Maybe we need more bloodwork. :YMSIGH:

Its kind of funny that even though Blackie didn't have much appetite today, he was very rambunctious (for him). Twice this afternoon he ran from his food in the bathroom to the living room couch and jumped up into his favorite spot. And I mean ran - I could even hear him from the basement.

Re: 1/30 Blackie amps 359 pmps 231

I was thinking maybe more bloodwork for the pancreatitis might be good...just to see where he is at??

I dont know if you were around when Latte went through an eating litter phase. Oh gwad...drove me c r a z y. I swear at one point I was half tempted to put litter on her food so she would eat. Silly/funny in retrospect, but...ARG at the time. She had mild anemia. According to the U and her specialist her numbers were something to watch, but at that point not necessary to treat. So, I know little about the tx, but can relate to the concern of behaviors. I think it would be good to see where he is at with that as well and see what your options are, or what to look for in the future.

It was never easy, but there always came an obvious point/time to recognize the 'new normal'. I dont think its giving up hope. New normal is not a doom/gloom situation AT ALL. Its just understanding and accepting the process. Once you can do that, the stress level goes down for you - thus kitty, and you can move on. When you resist the life process, it just makes it harder on both of you. I know, easier said than done. :YMSIGH:

Im so glad you got lots of lap time. Do you get tomorrow off, too or are you back tbp? Always seems I needed a week off after a vacation just to recoup. And the running around.... :thumbup

Have a great night Ele!

Thanks, Caroline. From what I've read, it can take up to months to get better from P'titis. But I am going to stop stressing so much about it. It really helped to get away and get some renewed perspective. I will talk to the vet and see what our next step is though. And we'll just see if this is the new normal or if it does get better. At least the Mirt makes Blackie feel good and he eats. I'll be checking him a little later, especially after seeing that +4.
