1/30 Alphyne 370 AMPS - weird numbers??

Hello! My cat, Alphyne, started Lantus on 1/24 (2 units).

She had normal numbers in 2019, and then I started her sister, Gryphen on Purina DM. Alphy likes that food, so she ate it too, which the vet said was fine. In October 2020, I noticed Alphyne losing weight, so I had tests done. She went from 17 lbs to 13. She's REALLY fluffy, so sadly, I didn't notice it right away. :( Her numbers were much higher than Gryphen's, at 380. Diet change wasn't going to work (since she was already eating the recommended food), so after fructosamine tests, she started insulin, too.

Her numbers are all over the place! Do you think the low of 191 at +7 on the first day may have caused her body to freak out?

My girls all eat several small meals throughout the day. I'm doing a glucose curve today, and the only change I made today is that at the +7, I fed Fancy Feast Chopped Grill pate instead of Purina DM pate. Based on all the posts it seemed like an ok switch to make, since DM isn't the best choice.

It doesn't help that I have two girls starting Lantus at the same time; lots of stress. I have another thread going for Gryphen, since her numbers are all out of whack, too! Any help/advice is appreciated. Thank you!

First off, you might want to combine the two cats into one post going forward. I missed this one until now.

My comments about testing are the same for Alphyne. Was it the vet that suggested a 2 unit starting dose? That's higher than we normally start cats at, unless they are really big!

The 191 could have caused a bounce, but bounces are usually over by six cycles/three days. To be determined what she's doing at night or mid day and it that's causing another bounce

Sorry! I will combine them...the rules said one post, one cat, and I was trying to follow them. Newbie and all. Ha!!

Yes, the vet actually wanted to start them both at 2, but I refused to do it for Gryphen, because her numbers weren't nearly as high, and because she has no other symptoms. My vet was honest, though, in that she has never prescribed Lantus before. She is conferring with a colleague in another city. North Dakota, while not necessarily rural, has limited vet options, no specialists, etc.

Thanks again, I appreciate it very much!

We don't often get multiple cats with one person.

Depending on the dosing method followed, you would have started them both at 1 unit, since there is dry in the picture, or a weight based formula that often works out close to 1 unit. Good call on following your instincts.

I wasn't expecting Alphyne to be diabetic, at all. Gryphen was enough of a shock!

Hopefully with all the great information I'm learning here, I can help them both!! I have two others also (non-diabetic), so this info will help them as well!
