I'm getting a little frustrated because Simon tested at 124 this morning which is high again for him. I usually do not put food down during the night but last night I put some in the automatic feeder to open at +8. Do you think this may be why his number was higher this morning? The issue is that I am nervous that Simon is losing weight. He is a big boy at 14 pounds but is down from 18 (over the last year). Last week he was 14.5 pounds and yesterday when I weighed him, he is 14 pounds. Losing 1/2 pound in a week sounds like alot to me. He usually eats a little over a can (6.5 oz) a day, split up into 4 meals and then gets a few freeze dried chicken pieces as a reward after poking his ear. Should I be feeding him more food but will this spike his bg? I'm going to try and test at +2 before I leave for work and see where he is. He seems great and has lots of energy. Thanks for any advice.

Maybe he ate some of the food closer to AMPS which may have caused a higher number......I am not sure. As far as amount of food you feed it does seem like it would be enough. Putty is a little over 13lb's and he gets two 3.3oz cans a day....divided into mini-meals.

I think I would be concerned about the weight loss....1/2 lb loss in a week does seem like a lot to me. When is the last time he was checked at the vet?

I just had him at the new vet before Christmas and his weight was 14.6 pounds. I am supposed to bring him this month to get a urinalysis done. When he was at the vets, they did a fructosomine check and his results were 403, which they said was in the normal range. I think I call to bring him in sometime in the next 2 weeks (when I have a little more money!).

I just did a +2 and he is at 132!

Good morning guys! No answer on the weight question ... sorry to see a higher range of numbers for simon today but they are still nice numbers... hope you see some green soon .. have a great day guys!

How are you weighing Simon? Are you using a baby scale? If not, the weight may be less reliable. Do you know what Simon's ideal weight should be?

The weight/FD factor to keep in mind is that as a cat is better regulated, their appetite decreases. The cat is now utilizing food they way he should so that ravenous appetite begins to subside. Also, a LC diet may be contributing to weight loss. Someone recently mentioned that since feeding LC to the other cat in the house, their civvie was now losing weight. I would probably want to get my cat in to have the vet give a check on weight if I was concerned.

I can't help with dosing. I think overall he looks amazing!!!! The furshot can impact things while his shed is being rebuilt though. I wonder if this is still a factor.

Regarding the weight - that is a lot of weight to lose but you can't use human scales. They just aren't accurate enough. Since you are in the US you can get amazing deals on petscales, shippingscales, or baby scales on EBAY. Some sites even offer free shipping. With a diabetic cat you should have an accurate scale that weighs to the ounce or better. This is actually how we caught Maverick's diabetes both times - weight loss trend.

If he is losing weight really slowly its nothing to worry about. But if it is quickly you need to step in and assist feed, or tempt him to eat more and get blood work done to make sure there aren't any reasons for the weight loss. Maybe you switched foods to a lower calorie version. Maverick eats mainly Turkey and Giblets I hate the high fat content but I need to keep his weight up. The fish based foods are lower calories and he just couldn't eat enough of this to maintain his weight before. We are starting to add this in.

I hope you will be able to discuss Simon's weight with your vet... It is good that he seems fine and has a lot of energy. That's all so positive! Hope it turns out okay for you both!

Thanks for all your posts. I have to admit that I probably have not weighed Simon in an appropriate way. I just weighed myself on my scale and then weighed the two of us together and subtracted my weight. I will definitely go buy a scale that is for pets or at least a baby scale. The first vet I went to said Simon should weigh about 12 pounds, although I think that might be too little. Simon is a very big cat and even the tech at the new vet first thought Simon's paws were swollen because they are so big! I have been feeding him mostly the seafood variety of Friskies, so I guess that is more low carb than the turkey or chicken. Thanks for the link to Dr. Lisa's informaton on weight and food. When I get home from work, I'll read over it. My DH is going home at lunch and will test Simon to see if his bg went down any from this morning.

Simon has been in the blues all day which is higher than usual for him. I have been blaming it on giving him food in the middle of the night in his automatic feeder. So just a little while ago, I told Simon that unless he is in the 60's, I am not going to give him any food in the middle of the night. So right away, he tests in the 60's. Cats sure are funny!

Simon must have got the memo, there appears to be a 60s theme party going on in Lantus Land tonight.. I am hoping Baby's memo arrives soon!

It looks like he's surfing. The absolutely conservative part of me wants to ask whether there's any possibility of your squeeking in a test at +4 or +5? If not, leave plenty of food out.

He's gone up a little after I gave him some food. I'll get a reading at +3.5 and if it looks ok, I'll put some food in the automatic feeder to open at +6. I can't get a much later reading because I have to be at work pretty early tomorrow. Simon, please don't go lower!!
 
I made a mistake on his spreadsheet and on the subject line but have corrected it now. The reading at +4 was 72 and at +4.5 is 70. I am leaving some food out for Simon to eat during the night. Hopefully, it won't make his AMPS high again but I would rather have him a little high than too low. Have a good night!
