1/3 Bear AMPS (High)

Hi friends :) Bear is running a bit high this morning it seems. I hate that the Libre doesn't give readings over a certain number. I didn't want to keep putting 500 on my spreadsheet when I wasn't sure if it was 500 when it could be 350 or 400. So I'm just going to put high when I can't double check with the meter. Now that I feel more comfortable I am going to try and double check these numbers more often.

If you are willing to shell out the cash for the Libre reader unit (one time purchase) it will actually give you exact readings when you scan all the way up to 500 (even though the graph still tops out at 350). I don’t know if you can use both that and the app? I think so? You’d have to double check. I think from what I read in past that the two just won’t communicate, like when you take a scan with the reader it won’t send that info to the phone. But if you can use both on the same sensor, it would give you a backup for when he’s high without having to stick him - at least under 500, which works for Jack; he very rarely hits 500 but has spent days in the high 300’s and even 400’s  before. It’s good to know just how high he is; there’s a big difference in my worry factor between 350 and 450.

Just a thought!

Hi! I do have the reader and that is what I use. I'm looking back and I don't think I've ever gotten a reading higher than 360. Do you get readings up to 400's?

I do, it doesn’t read HIGH until above 500. I do have the oldest model though, the 14-day, because that’s what they had at the ER vet. Do you have the Libre 2? The 2 is supposed to be better, more accurate, but it would be amazing to me if they had taken away testing range! Though even so I would be surprised at a random number like 360 being the cutoff… would expect 350, 400, etc…

I have the Libre 2. The specialist we see doesn't love the Libre's because of their inaccuracies but says they're useful for curves. When I looked it up it says 400 is the cut off but I've never seen a number in the 400s.

Bear looks like he's in a blood sugar hangover. :p

Neko used to get over 600, or "Hi" on my meter. Hated it when the meter greeted me. :banghead: To tell you the truth, we don't actually do anything different with the dosing methods if kitty is over 350 or over 500. It's not really that important to get exact when blood sugar is just "too high".

Haha, yes, I hate it too! Okay. I probably won’t worry about it too much. Just trying to stay vigilant about updated the spreadsheet but if it saves him a prick that’s okay :)

Bear is so cute in his little sweater. :)

The Libre isn’t exact, but I believe it’s close enough for clinical decisions, up until you reach the point when kitty is well into greens… then the spread seems to widen. I’d say that mine ranges in meter variance range, until that point. Then, though, he might actually be 70 but the Libre is freaking out about 50, or even thinking it’s lower…

I do find it extremely useful for trying to figure out what Jack’s patterns are (this week, anyway  ). And seeing what he did when I’m not around. I’d have missed so many nadirs without it, or missed bounce breaks. Also it saves me and him the stress (and battle) of frequent ear sticks. With the Libre, at least I can save them for when I really need them (super highs, or possible lows, or keto checks), which keeps our relationship much more peaceful.

It’s interesting to know that the Libre 2 doesn’t show numbers as high as the original version does. Mine ranges from 500 to 40. (Yes, Jack has hit both ends.) I guess they decided they didn’t need it, on humans? That’s useful for me to know; I have considered upgrading but now I know I need to wait for Jack to be much better stabilized and regulated before I’ll want to change. Someday I’d love to try the mini-sized 3, or even the future 4 that’s in development (it’s supposed to be able to track ketones too!) But the fact that the 3 is app-only is currently a major obstacle, as I need multiple family members to be able to help watch him through the day when I’m gone. Maybe if he gets real stable, in future, so that he could go 8 or more hours untested…. That little penny-sized sensor would so much better fit a cat though…

That is really interesting! Yes, I've seen some people posting about the 3s. I didn't know the 3 was app only - that definitely is a bummer. That takes it out of the running for me too. I had no idea about the 4 - that's so cool! Would be amazing to have ketones on there as well. It would be so much nicer to have a smaller one too. Or if they just made a pet one :D
