UPDATE 13:00 HRS JAN 29TH

Ran out of test strips on the ReliOn Micro, so been using my back up Accu-Chek for the past few days until today and went to Walmart and bought another meter ReliOn Prime and test strips.

Did a BG now and with the NEW ReliOn Prime I got 150 and just to check I did one on the Accu-Chek and got 185.........A BIG DIFFERENCE

SO HOW DO I KNOW WHICH IS CORRECT, I've been going on the readings based on the BG's and now with such a difference maybe I have incorrect numbers and dosing Davidson accordingly.

What do you suggest?? And which numbers do I use for updating my SS today - right now so you all see the results I will use the Accu-Check since that is what I have used the past few days.

Shawna

Morning.........

Did a BG last night at +11 299, and this morning AMPS 288.........starting the second day with 2.75u and see how he does.........

Re: 1/29 Davidson AMPS 288

Hi guys .. yellow isn't a bad starting point .. numbers could easily dip down into some blues! have a great day guys!

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

I used to use the Accu-Chek but changed because of the cost of the strips. The Accu-Chek DOES test higher than the Relion. Don't worry. If you're going to use the Relion from now on, don't try to compare the numbers. Just start dosing based on what your current meter shows. If you're only using the Relion as a back-up, use it as little as possible and start using the Accu-Chek as soon as possible. Personally, I have three meters, all the same kind so the strips are interchangeable and the numbers are all consistent from one meter to the next.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

Patty took the words right out of my mouth. It's always scary when you first see that two meters can give you pretty different numbers, so that is why we do settle on one meter and stick with it. You can really make yourself crazy with constant side-by-side checks between meters!

FWIW, many people here do use the Relion and are very happy with it, so you can count on its consistency. I switched to the Arkray Vital, which is very similar to one of the Relion meters (I can't remember which model), mainly because the strips for the Vital were even cheaper than strips for the Relion, AND it meant I didn't have to go to Walmart (a fate worse than death!) for strips! I order my supplies from American Diabetes Wholesale.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

You've gotten good advice on the meters. Just stick w/ the one you want to use most. Another point though, remember that meters are only required to be 20% +/- accurate. So that 150 compared to the 185 is only just out of the variable range. Don't try to look at each number, look at the flow of the tests. You'll get to know what to expect depending on where in the cycle you test.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

I even switched the ReliOn model as the test strips were a lot cheaper then the Micro model I started with. I am from Canada and the test strips are 3 times the price here if not more, so went to Walmart USA. The Accu-Chek strips are also more expensive here (where I bought the meter) and in USA

I cannot test with my original ReliOn as I have no more test strips............

So if I continue to use the ReliOn Prime (bought 400 test strips so I don't have to go back) how do I know if it is accurate?? The last reading on this device was 150 at 1pm and I can test again no problem but still need to know if they are realistic numbers.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

I use the Relion Prime, and have been for quite some time now. It's accurate, and I also did a test comparison with the old meter that I was using. The old one was reading much higher than the Prime was. Needless to say, I went with the Relion Prime. I know it's accurate, and I trust it.

That's just my opinion of it, and what I know of it. :-D Hope that helps. :-D

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

The ReliOn is, in general, a good and accurate meter, so as long as you stick with just the ReliOn and base dosing decisions on the numbers you get from it (rather than flipping back and forth between meters), you're in good shape. I know it sounds confusing, especially when you see the big difference in numbers between different meters, but by sticking with one meter, you'll get consistent results...and consistency is what is really important here. I hope that at least sort of makes sense...I'm sure there is someone else who can explain it a bit more eloquently than I can!

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

Another thing to consider is that the Prime is a new meter, and it's fresh complete with fresh strips. You're going to get a much better reading than you would with the old one.

Again, hope that helps. :-D

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

Thanks............I did a blood test on myself just to see the difference and with the ReliOn Prime I'm 107, Accu-Chek 99..........so I guess it's not off by that much. Not sure I want to be pricked 5-8 times per day, it took me long enough to prick myself the one time - haha.

I'll use the ReliOn Prime from now on, since I have 400 test strips which will last a while ($9/50) and by far the cheapest.........I look at his chart so that will tell me and also I am here every day at home so will look for any signs in him

QUESTION: Should I finish TODAY with the Accu-Chek so as least I am consistent with the numbers and start with the new meter tonight when I do the shot??

Thanks again

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

Finishing today with the AccuCheck is not a bad idea. And definitely remember to make notes in your SS about when you switch meters, too!

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

I second what Amy said. Finish with the old one, and begin using the new meter, but be sure to mark that on Davidson's spreadsheet. Always keep notes on whatever you, whatever you give, etc. That way you have information to refer back on if you need to, or you want to see how he's doing overall, etc.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

I'd finish the cycle with the meter you started with. I also agree with the others to pick one and stick with it if you can. I've heard that some meters are further apart at the high numbers, but much closer at the lower ones, which is what the test on you confirmed. That's where it's really important to be right.

BTW: I also cross border shop for my strips (the Confirm and use the ADW link Suzanne listed). However, ADW does not direct ship to Canada. Rachel/Chyna found a service that will redirect packages - contact her if you are interested. I live close enough I can pop across the border to a US postal box.

Re: 1/29 Davidson HELP - BIG CONCERN!!!

Okay, will use the new ReliOn Prime from now on...........I have a separate Journal Book where all notes are made, plus an Excel SS that goes to my Vet daily..........I live 10 min. to the Border, so not an issue going across and the test strips now are the cheapest by far..........

THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND ADVISE...........

I'll start a new condo since there is no reason to worry now and I did make notes on the SS and hope you can understand them.

Rgds

Re: 1/29 Davidson QUESTION +3.5 185 +5 117 +7 108

NEED ADVICE: Davidson has never been this low so how often should I test him? When is the real cause for concern where I check him hourly?

FYI - my last SS update at +7 is with the meter I've been using since increasing the dose this week to get consistent reads.

Thanks

Shawna

Re: 1/29 Davidson QUESTION +3.5 185 +5 117 +7 108

If you look at the +5 and the +7, they aren't that far apart so he's likely "surfing" or hanging out at the range. You could check in a couple hours if you wanted. That will give you an idea if he's going up for PMPS by then. These are great normal healing pancreas numbers. :-D

ETA: I'd check hourly if he got below 90, every half hour if in the 60's, but it depends on what part of the cycle he's in. This is fairly late.

Re: 1/29 Davidson QUESTION +3.5 185 +5 117 +7 108

Whoa - Blue skies for Davidson today
Wonderful!

Glad you got the meter business sorted out.
FWIW I stuck with one brand and got the same brand for my back up meter.

Re: 1/29 Davidson QUESTION +3.5 185 +5 117 +7 108

look like he's on his way up, so will do the next BG at his PMPS time of 21:30...........and then before I go to bed and hopefully he won't drop much and I can get a full night sleep............the good thing about being up during the night is that I get to see all the deer walking around my yard. Ahhh, reasons for everything.
