So today we are starting out in the blues, High Blues, but still blues rather than yellows. :)

Working from home today so will be watching him and I HOPE he does not bounce around or at least not as bad. He is such a showoff.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199

Oh My - I am so happy I am home today.

Rex just threw up about 1/2 his food. No Hairball.

So should I feed him some more (new) food to compensate for the amount he threw up or just ride it out and wait and see?

I don't want him to go Hypo and have a bad bounce.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 - Help!

Hi guys,

Was it a "scarf 'n barf"? If so, I would think that you could give him a little more food if he is still interested in eating. How often do you feed? Do you feed a lot a one time, or spread it out in smaller amounts. Most diabetic cats do best on more frequent, smaller meals. If your schedule doesn't allow you to be home during the day, you could try using an auto feeder.

Nice AMPS, Rex!

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 - Help!

Hi Ella & Sienne,

He eats 5/8 of a can at 8am and 8pm (normal feeding pattern since Jul 2012 dx date).

I am 99% sure he will eat a replacement amount. He is such a good eater and he does NOT normally barf.

OK he is eating 1/4 can of his wet food. We will see if he keeps that down.

So with his bounce and his barf, should I start testing every hour?

Thanks So Much

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 - Thanks For The Help :)

Hi guys, you only feed twice a day? Like Ella said it is better for a diabetic kitty to be fed several small meals a day. Great start to the day. I would get a +2 and see if he is dropping and then go from there. Glad you can be home to monitor. Have a great Monday!

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 - Thanks For The Help :)

+2 at 156 (AlphaTrak 2)

Hello Michelle & Ella,

So currently we are feeding him every 12 hours like clockwork; 8am and 8pm.

I am able to work from home every once and a while. I could give him small meals throughout the day, but not on a continuous basis.

I know the ideal situation would be several small meals.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136

Much nicer numbers today for Rex!

On feeding smaller meals, you do want to feed meals so he is finished eating (ideally) before nadir. It's harder to do with grazers, but with hoovers like my Neko the food is gone 30 seconds after it is put down. Is it possible to feed when you get up, and then again before you head out the door to work? On days that you go into work, you'll probably want to get an out the door blood test so you can see how he is going to do that day. That +2 test you got today is lower than your PS, which tells you that Rex will have a normal Lantus cycle with some action.

An alternative to autofeeders is to mix a bit of water into food, and freeze it in an ice cube tray. You put out a cube in the morning and it'll be a while until he can eat it.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136

Last night realized running low on AlphaTrak test strips. As of now I have 10 AT test strips and more on the way.

Also needed a backup meter and picked up the ReliOn Micro per Consumer Report PDF in Sticky.

I will be conducting side-by-side testing until I run out of AlphaTrak test strips.

So AlphaTrak low BG is 80 and Micro low BG is 50

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136 +6 201 +8 337 +9 447

So we have not been below 100s wince 1/24.

Trying to understand if this is a bounce continuation? We are in the 400s again. hmmmm

Will test again in an hour to see the trend.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136 +6 201 +8 337 +9 447

This isn't a continuation of the bounce. The bounce cleared, numbers dropped, and Rex's liver and pancreas overreacted and another bounce started. That's what you're seeing with the red at +9.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136 +6 201 +8 337 +9 447

Ok,
I see what you are saying, thanks.

So, the hope is that this bounce will be smaller and his liver and pancreas will over time normalize and overreact as much.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS 199 + 2 156 +4 136 +6 201 +8 337 +9 447

Exactly. The more time that Rex spends in lower numbers, the more his body will recognize that this is the range he wants to be in. Given that most of our cats were experiencing high BG levels before we realized something was wrong, their body essentially "recalibrated" and got used to being in higher numbers. Now that they are getting insulin, the numbers are coming down but their body doesn't remember what normal is. The more time in normal numbers, hopefully, the less Rex will bounce.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS +8 337 +9 447 PMPS 478 ** Testing Site??

Testing Site Questions:

So I have been testing Rex on his right ear. I move the specific testing site up and down the right ear.

Is it ok to alternate or switch ears for a period of time?

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS +8 337 +9 447 PMPS 478 ** Testing Site??

Absolutely! You can use either ear, anywhere along the edge of each.

I noticed, and so have others, that one ear seems to bleed better than the other. Bob was always "left eared". But either worked.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS +8 337 +9 447 PMPS 478 ** Testing Site??

Absolutely. I switch ears every single test. One ear always bleeds better than the other. But still it's better to alternae.

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS +8 337 +9 447 PMPS 478 ** Testing Site??

So relieved, His ears look just fine right now! :-D

Just planning. Thanks

Re: 1/28 Rex AMPS +8 337 +9 447 PMPS 478

And you put Neosporin ointment with pain relief on them?

I also bought Ledum homeopathic and put one little tab in a dropper bottle and dissolve. Every day I put some on Graciies ears. It doesn't help with pain or soreness but it is for punctures.

** So I am out of AlphaTrak test strips.

Switching meters to ReliOn Micro have plenty of test strips.

I know AlphaTrak is so different than all the other meters.

Rich, following up on the pet-feeder, you bought the same one I have. A couple of tips.
1) the user manual is not great, there's an improved version on the vendors website with better examples of how to program it.
2) don't use the "record your voice" feature. I did and it drove me crazy. No way to turn it off, just recorded silence over top of it.
3) Neko was scared stiff of the noise the first few times. Then I showed her there was food in it right after the noise sounded. Now it's her BFF.

Wendy that is some great advise on the pet feeder.

I also picked up a new meter after chatting with you. The ReliOn Micro had great CR reviews. Very easy to use.

I conducted side-by-side testing while I still had AlphaTrak test strips.

Rex's is in another bounce, hope it is short lived. Grrr :)

I see you are in a pink bounce. hahahaha
