1/28 Max AMBG 119; +9 582; PM SHOT ON BOARD

Please see Max's spreadsheet. We got a green last night, and almost a green for preshot. He is supposed to be getting his next shot (6 units) within the hour, and then I have to leave for work. He'll eat, he always does, but I will not be home to monitor him. So...full shot? Half shot? No shot?

Here's what Wendy had to say:

I'd give Max a small LC snack to try to prevent him from dropping any more into AMPS. Max tends to nadir late, so I'm hoping he'll turn around and head up by AMPS. It's really hard now to guess what to do without seeing that preshot number. If it's clear he's bouncing, then you are good to go on the full dose. If he's green, I wouldn't do the full dose if you can't monitor. Even a reduced dose may not be a good idea, cause the AM cycle will still be mostly under control of the 6.0 unit depot.

If you test when you get up, how long before normal shot time is that? Can you stall even a little bit before heading out the door?

You might want to change the subject line to get more eyes on you. It's after midnight here and I'm fading.

Didn't catch anyone online, so didn't shoot. Ugh. Hope I'm not screwing him up too bad. He ate some turkey and giblets FF for breakfast and I left out some frozen cooked turkey. I tired to keep it as low carb as possible with the turkey snacks. Usually I leave out some frozen FF. I'll be back home to test in about 8 hours. ;-----;

I think you made right call :). You’ve got, Max has depot on his side ;)
I would have done as you... especially if I couldn’t be home to monitor.
Have a great day :bighug:

Sorry no one was up to help you - it's a difficult hour for most folks. I've run into the same issue myself.

I have just one suggestion - since you have to leave for work - is there any possible way that you can get up and give him is shot two hours before you have to leave? The only way to know or at least get an idea of how it's going to affect him is to get a 2+. Then you would feed accordingly. HC or MC based on the 2+.

I would really be reluctant to skip the shot entirely since he's had such high numbers and it does look like he's finally showing terrific progress! Lantus is a depot drug so it builds up over time - if you skip the shot it may drain the depot - and the numbers will be high again. Every cat is different though - so we don't know how the shot today would have impacted him. It would be great to continue with his dosage, get that 2+ to see what's going on and then feed accordingly...did you say that you 'could' get home if needed for a lunch time checkup?

I'm hoping others will chime in as to what they do when they have to leave for work. Those experiences would be most beneficial for you. :)

I'm already at work. If I give him his shot early, won't that mess up the 12/12 schedule? I can come home for lunch some days, but not every day. It depends on how busy we are, how staffed, etc. If I move his shot time to 4am/4pm there will be a day where he'll get it 2 hours late at 6:30pm, and then we'd have to go right back to 4am the next day. I wish I could make him 100% my focus but when you're single, living alone and working full time, you have to find a balance and I'm trying my best with that.

Edit: My job is not Mon-Fri, 9-5 either. It's different days, different hours and there's nothing I can do to change that. They've already accommodated me as best they can.

Ah, yes, you're right. I didn't realize that you didn't get home after 8 hours :(

The 12/12 schedule is, IMHO, critical to best results so yes, better to not mess with that and stay as close to that schedule as possible.

You're doing a wonderful job with Max - I hope others will weigh in on the skip versus a smaller amount as I, fortunately haven't had to deal with that situation. I won't shoot anything lower than 50 - but that's our situation. ECID - have a great day!

Hey there. With that 95 at +9 last night, it looks like he was on the way up and you probably could have shot. And, seeing his first green, he'll probably bounce upwards. But better safe than sorry. We have a saying here, "Better to be high for a day than too low for a moment"

Thank you! I'll be home tonight and all day tomorrow so I'll be dosing and testing!

If there is it's only because of the skipped shot. When he gets his next one he will be right back down.

It's different because you know why this time (skipped shot) Before it was black no matter what you did. That's a big difference.

Better safe than sorry. Best choice was a skip until you have some data on what he does with those lower preshots or can monitor. But awesome AMPS though. :woot: Technically we’d call it AMBG, for blood glucose, cause you didn’t actually shoot.

Ah, true! AMBG.

I have NO idea what he'd do on 6 units with an AMBG almost in the green. Heck I don't think we've even had an AMPS in the yellow yet. I would have been crazy with anxiety all day. I'm home for the next three cycles though so hopefully I'll be able to pick up some new patterns and figure out this lower number business.

Typically cats have a lot flatter cycles when you start with lower preshots. But with as little we know about Max and low numbers, I wouldn’t have felt comfy with him under 150.

Thanks, I agree with the 150.

I just got home and did a +9....582! :nailbiting:

Still not "HI" though, and he's had several "HI" readings before. So not as bad as it could have been. He did throw up some breakfast though! But him throwing up in the high 500s isn't uncommon. Poor boy!

Just did a ketone check. I think we're negative!

I was actually up when you shot (I think) and refreshed your old thread, didn’t see anything, and promptly went back to sleep (it was 2:30-3am).

The next morning, I was like, Omg there’s probably a new thread. What was I thinking?!?!?

Sleepy brain cannot function. But then again, I wouldn’t have helped too much. I would’ve said it would be safe to shoot SOMETHING since he was going up. How much? I don’t know. I just wanted to be there for emotional support haha

But yay!!! Good job! Hope Max comes down
