I could put the pumpkin right into my cats and dogs food with no objections.

Dogs yes, cats no, as I learned today. Callie was interested in the pumpkin when I got it out for Sammy. So I plopped a bit in front of her. This was right after testing when I wanted her to eat so I could give her insulin. She started gagging and heaving. Poor little thing. Note to self: do not get pumpkin near Callie when I need her to eat. :) She did eat after a few minutes, thankfully. On the other hand, our Newfie, Phoebe would have eaten the whole can. That would have been bad for my husband when he does doggy doo patrol. LOL

AHHHHaaaaa....that is hilarious and unreal all at once, Kris :joyful::joyful::joyful:. Have you ever read books by James Herriot ?(All Creatures Great and Small, etc). Bet you have, but if you havent I know you'd like them. I dug mine out the other day and putting them in my "to read" stack:):coffee:

Some of my favorite books. I laugh till I cry...

I put the tsp of pumpkin in their food and stirred it up and they never knew it was there.

What sweet, cooperative, amiable fur children you have, Bobbie. We are still on poop patrol here. its been about 24 hours since the little hard poopies of yesterday. He is acting and eating fine but does not know a glycerin suppository awaits him . Told him earlier that is our plan so he has been warned. We got to be pros at enemas and suppositories with our female , Chloe. With Elmo, the few times we have done it all it takes is gently, slowly putting only the tip in and we get movement. To anyone reading this, we did this upon training and advice from vet first. You have to be very careful .

Hope he goes soon.

Hope he goes soon.[/QUOTEGreat news on poopy front here.... after an epic fail at suppository staying in (:woot::woot::woot::woot::woot:)....then a less than successful warm water enema :banghead:, Elmo got in the LB and had a wonderful poop !!!! :bighug::banghead::rolleyes::woot::D:cool:.....have decided to start a dose of 1/16 t miralax twice daily and monitor its effect . We shall see :)

Yay! So glad he went for you. It takes a special person to get excited about kitty potty. ;) I so get it! LOL Hope the Miralax works for you. :)

Unfortunately Mr. Persnickety would have none of it. He was so disgusted at me and the food. He hasn't eaten all day. Little Stinker. But it's so good yours will eat it for you. Back to the ECID thing. And it's so good there are other options and ideas. I so appreciate everyone sharing with me. :)

Yeah, Glennie, glad I got the name thing straightened out :):bighug:. I can be slow but I usually eventually get it figured out. And Elmo finally had a poo today after boycotting again yesterday. I went with full 1/8 t miralax instead of dividing into two 1/16 doses and it worked so i will be giving that every day from now on so we have no more evenings filled with suppositories and/or enemas( it says here in small print;))...hope you and yours are doing well :bighug:

I've seen TiTi hit red and black when severely constipated.
Kathy, thank u so much for sharing . It still amazes me that not going poo could do that to our fur kids ....my guy loves to balance on the corner of the LB and when he strains and loses his balance he gets very frustrated on top of the constipation .

You're so fine. And yep, you did figure it out. :) Neither Callie nor I minded a bit.

So glad for you that Elmo went potty. What a relief, huh?! For you and for him. (I'm sorry I couldn't help that.:D) That's great you found what worked for him. I picked up Miralax today, and I'll try it tomorrow. I was so hopeful about the pumpkin (and thanks to everyone that suggested it), but it just didn't work for Sammy. I ended up making a pumpkin pie. Now that he would probably eat...

How did you give the Miralax? I hope it continues to work for Elmo. An evening with suppositories and enemas is no fun! So enjoy what is hopefully a more stress-free evening!

Glennie, I had "heard" ( not on FDMB) that miralax was not good for kitties with kidney issues so I checked out Tanya's Guide to CKD cats and read it was perfectly safe . She gave several suggestions : starting with 1/8 t once a day or divided in half given twice a day. She suggests trying a dose of 1/8 for 3 days then going up to 1/4 if it doesn't move things along . I had been giving 1/8 In two doses then went with 1/8 full today which worked for Elmo. I know many members give 1/4 t twice a day so it bears some research for each kitty. Hope it works for Sammy . Btw, my sweetest kitty ever name was Sammy, a beautiful Siamese mix. Love the name that brings so many sweet memories to mind .May easy and abundant poops be in Sammy's near future :bighug::bighug:

Sweet of you to share your research with me. Do you mix it in with Elmo's food or just with water and syringe it in? I'm going to try it this morning. Wish me luck. Thank you for the abundant poops wishes. LOL

My mom had a Siamese named Sammy aka Samuel Jones (? but that was his name), and he was such a sweetheart. They are all special, but then there are those really SPECIAL ones, huh?! I know- just hearing the name or seeing a picture that looks like that kitty almost brings tears and a lump in the throat. Yay for the sweet memories. Callie is our sweetest cat ever, and I've had some sweet ones so that's saying a lot.

We adore our Sammy, but none of us would call our Sammy the sweetest kitty ever. We feel honored when he wants our love, and he is such a character! But not always sweet, no. We wouldn't trade him for anything though. We figure his grouchiness is caused by being the only male in a household with 5 female cats, and he feels like he needs to keep them all in line. He has been so patient with all of the additions, accepting each new cat with resignation. But I know he thinks, "Another one? REALLY?" And then, too, there's the constipation. So hopefully this will help.

Oh, I did call the Vetoquinol company this morning and ask if they have a product without the molasses and corn syrup. Unfortunately, they don't. The very nice customer service man told me that's in there because the cats like it. No, they really don't. But I suggested there's a big market out there for a product that works this well without the sugar, explaining about he diabetes and all. It probably won't help, but he did listen.

Have a great day and hope Elmo is able to go potty.
