Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Sending many prayers that Sooty will continue to improve. A couple of years ago Tori was in hospital with Septicemia. I know how scary this must be for you.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Come on Sooty, FIGHT. You can do this. Sending snowflakes, healing vines, white light and positive thoughts. HUGS to you, Sooty and Cathy. Hope you all rest well and get a good report tomorrow.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Hi all, thanks so much for all your support!

Have only just had word, Sooty is about the same this morning, no better, but no worse either. I'm just glad that he made it through the night.
Dr Roesner is en route taking him back to the hospital. Will speak to her soon as she calls... Probably changing ABx today, possible consult with an Internal Medicine specialist, the lab work from yesterday is still pending...

Will try my best to let you know, as and when anything changes,
Perry

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

So sorry for your worries about Sooty...my Thomas had a severe ptis attack during his OTJ countdown and was as you describe Sooty to be...he was in the ER for about 4 days, and eventually he came around good as new...and still OTJ! (and miraculously, also, his neuropathy had resolved!) So, I hope for the same wonderful outcome I had from this very scary venture.

Holding you both close in my heart and sending tons of vines and prayers to Sooty...hang in there!!

(((Perry and Sooty)))

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Sending more prayers for Sooty. We are thinking of you all and hoping he will start to recover with the great treatment he is getting.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Thanks everyone, and Judith, that really helped - thank you so much for sharing that.

There's no change to report yet, one of the hard things about this is all the waiting (like lab work, for instance, takes a matter of days, not hours...) meanwhile the poor little guy just has to hang in there and he must be feeling so bad, but he's quite the little fighter!

Hope to have SOME news a little later, meanwhile it's just a case of 'hurry up and wait', mostly...

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Perry,
i know exactly how you feel....but the positive in all is that he is a fighter as you mention....

will continue to pray for you guys....we are still waiting ourselves...Rocket still not 100%

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

I know what you mean about waiting for test results....guess we all run into that a lot....but gee, I wish they would hurry up so he can get what he needs. Thinking of you all tonight. Sending hugs to Sooty boy...and to you and Cathy too.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Hi all, Sooty showed some small impovement late on yesterday, his temp actually came down to 102.3 at 9PM (normal!) - amazing but true. We visited him again last night and he did look quite a lot better. But still very wobbly on his feet and clearly still VERY ill; he still won't eat on his own at all, not even FD chix - despite being given Mirtazapine yesterday afternoon. That shows that he is still very very ill even though his temperture had dropped somewhat.

This morning he's just 'stable' - no better no worse; his temp on arrival back at the Vet office was 103.3 and so we need to see what happens to it over the next few hours to decide on ABx, are the current ones working or not.

U/S exam is scheduled for 2pm and the U/S-grapher is also an Internal Medecine Diplomate so our Vet will be discussing him with her. We may also get some lab results today, the Vet office is chasing the Atlanta Antech Lab.

We're all getting to the point where we're becoming reluctant to put him through much more of this, so today could really be make or break. We'll try our level best do what we all feel is right.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Sending lots more hugs and good thoughts for Perry. You know Perry best.

As a member of a feline assisted feeding forum for 2.5 years though, please know that a cat not eating is not a cat that is giving up. Maverick didn't eat for almost ten solid weeks in 2008 and almost died. Assist feeding can get them through a crisis. Appetite stimulants sometimes make things worse - it would be like giving you one with an all out flu. You'd eat (maybe) but feel even worse.

Perry is in good hands and hearing improvement means he is fighting. Please give him a hug.

I understand and agree. I just meant to say that the fact that Sooty is not eating shows that he is still a very very sick boy (and so we have to not believe that the other apparent improvements do not necessarily mean that he is really getting any better). I do not mean to raise false hopes here, is all - it is still very much touch and go for Sooty right now but you are right he is a fighter and it is just killing us to see him go through this...

ETA: Sooty IS still being syringe-fed, every 2 hours.

Perry

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Yes I do understand and I want to thank you for saying it - It might not sound like it (and if so I am sorry) but it was and IS really appreciated - I DO understand your motives!

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Please dont give up on Sooty, he just needs proper meds & he will feel better--Praying for good test results & Sooty's recovery!!--HUGS!

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Hi Perry. Well it sounds like at least he's stable. Poor little guy. He sounds like he is going through what Tori did a couple of years ago. SHe had septicemia and severe pancreatitis. I know that you must be worried to death. I hope the ultrasound will give you some answers today. It's great that an IM person will be doing it. It;s good that they are syringe feeding him. My continued prayers are with you and your baby. Try not to give up hope. Sooty sounds like a very determined little boy. The will to live means so much. He can still do this. Try and hang in there.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Thanks for all the encouragement, we're doing all we can for him. and will only ever do what is best for him - I promise.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Prayers, prayers and more prayers for Sooty and for you, Perry and Cathy as well. Strength and support and snowflakes and vines and positive energy and anything else I can think of too. Keep fighting Sooty, you can do this! Hoping you get some answers soon and that Sooty feels better.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

My heart breaks for you...Thomas, too, was so very very sick..he did not even seem to recognize me when I would go to see him...not even a lift of the head. I thought I was losing him, and was thinking along the same lines as you are..how much more of this can I put him through..but, miraculously, after a few days lying motionless on his side, head turned away from me like this, something in him rose to the challenge..perhaps he was just preserving energy in his own way? Very small things...eating a piece of kibble..looking at me for a second or two. Then slowly each day something else of note. It was arduous and very painful, but I am so glad we hung in there...I so hope for Sooty to pull through...but, you will know what is best for him.

My heart is wrapped around you as you you go through this very difficult process. I hope the sonogram will help to enlighten you and the vets..with Thomas, we just never knew 'exactly' what was going on during this time...he did have a kidney tumor which we all knew about and is what he eventually died from, but it was not thought to be part of this event...he lived for another year and a half after this, a very happy kitty...in retrospect are assuming it was just a VERY severe ptis attack.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Whatever you decide, I know you have Sooty's best interests at heart. That said, fight Sooty!! There is a mountain of snowflakes, a forest of vines, and blinding healing energy heading your way.

Re: 1/23 Sooty - at ER

Hi all - so touched by all your good wishes, I cannot tell you...!!!

Finally, I have an update from the vet and - it's all much better news:

The U/Sound was all negative, no tumors, no Pancreas abnormality. Larger than normal Liver & Kidneys but we already knew that (due to the Acromegaly). They said there is no evidence of anything ending in "oma". That is such a relief...
...all the other tests we were waiting for were negative too - we still have one Urine C&S pending, might get that 2morrow or Friday. So we still don't know what we are fighting. But then sometimes you never do find out.

ALSO: since he was given a qtr tab of Bayer Childrens' Aspirin this AM, his temp is now down!!! (101.5 - last reading - yes, NORMAL!) and he is now eating on his own - which is maybe the BEST news EVER (so far)!! - he needs "ammo" to fight this, whatever it is... so even if all the meds are doing is just masking symptoms, if they are getting his temp down and letting him eat again, this has to be a VERY good thing for him - he has been fighting SO hard and he needs all the help he can get. The nurse who told me this could hardly speak - she said that all of a sudden, he is a whole different cat... she said it was SOOO good to see!

He's coming home for the night tonight - but back into the vet's in the morning, to resume fluids. Catheter is still in place.
He may just possibly get just a little bit spoiled this evening...!

So, the bottom line is: we're not out of the woods yet, by any means (must resist raising any false hopes, as we still have no definite Dx or assured outcome) - but the signs are very MUCH better than earlier today....

ETA: Cautionary note: Aspirin can be fatal to cats and must not be given except under direct veterinary supervision, at very low dose and no more than every 3 days.
Cats cannot metabolize aspirin like people - so it stays in their system a LONG time. Please don't ever give your cat any kind of aspirin!

Ohhhhhhhhh, Perry and Cathy. I haven't been responding, but reading all your posts, and praying for Sooty.
I held my breath all through that happy last post. Yes, I understand Sooty is not out of the woods, but it is the most encouraging word you've been able to say for days. To hear he is eating just make my heart soar.
How wonderful that he can come home, even just for the night.
