Good morning,

Mookie had a short but sweet drop into blue and then green last night. His bounce this morning isn't as bad as it has been, so fingers crossed he'll drop down for a while today.

I'm still trying to figure out what and when to feed Mookie. Many of the low-carb foods that are favored for FD are higher in fat than some of the medium-carb foods. Because fat aggravates his pancreatitis, not all the recommended low carb foods for FD are appropriate for him. I read recently that for those cats who have both FD and pancreatitis it's best to treat the pancreatitis first, with a low-fat, medium-carb diet, and the FD second, with however much insulin it takes to offset the extra carbs. Once again it's trial and error and tweaking here and there.

Meanwhile, it's the start of the weekend -- enjoy!

orning Mookie & Randa!! Gee that is a complicated situation! Surely you dont want to hurt his pancreatitis, but would like to keep the numbers reasonable...Check on the food lists here's the link:

Hope you can find a happy medium with the food & the ailment--We are thinking of you Moo Moo Mook!
Have a good Friday! Hugs &lub from us!

I'm sure you'll get advice from those who know (especially if you put question in your subject line), but it seems reasonable. You can manage higher numbers from higher carb foods with more juice. But that's just my logic, which may be faulty and is not burdened by facts.

Hi Randa,
I had a couple of CP kitties, and one was also diabetic. It used to be thought that feline chronic pancreatitis was aggravated by a high fat diet, but I believe that more recent work has shown that it is more directly related to inflammation. Having said that, many people still observe that higher fat foods aggravate CP. Have you definitely observed a correlation? Bear Man could tolerate some brands of higher fat foods, but not others. There is always a possibility that there are other ingredients in the food that are making him feel ill. You could experiment with brands. There is an old link with a list of lower fat foods; I don't know if you have seen it. I can't vouch for how up to date it is.

You could come to some sort of compromise by mixing foods to arrive at a lower average of carbs and fat (i.e. mix a lower fat food with a lower carb food). When dealing with kitties with multiple health issues, I have always found that the number one priority is to keep them feeling well, and to keep them eating. If the lower carb foods make Mookie sick, then you must feed something different. I agree with what you are saying about trial and error.

I wonder if you have thought about transitioning to a raw diet? Kitties with IBD (who have inflammation in the GI tract) can do quite well on a raw diet. It stands to reason that it could also help with the inflammation causing pancreatitis. Dr. Lisa does suggest that you can modify her raw diet by adding less skin if your kitty is sensitive to fat.

It sounds like you have a good handle on this already, and are doing what you need to do to find the optimum balance.

Hi, Linda, thanks for visiting my condo. I have noticed Mookie's discomfort after eating certain food, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it was the variety of food that caused the discomfort. It could have been the temperature of the food, the quantity, the time of day, gas, the last time he had a bowel movement, or a reaction to a specific ingredient in the food, etc.

The only food I'm certain made him ill is Wellness Core, which made him so uncomfortable I administered bupe. Of the other foods, the only way I can be certain is to pay more attention to the variables that could be causing his discomfort. I need to be more disciplined about recording observations and his diet on a daily basis.

I have thought about starting him on a raw food diet, but I need to get over my aversion to feeding him raw meat. It might very well suit him because he comes from a feral litter and he's a natural hunter. Meanwhile, I'll continue to try some food combinations with different percentages of fat and carbs to see what works for him. As I said this morning, I'd rather he have blue and yellow bg numbers that I can regulate with insulin than have pain from a low-carb diet, even if it means he'll never go into remission.

Thanks so much for your comments. Please let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions, as all feedback is welcome.
